Tangentially related, I have run across this: http://expositions.bnf.fr/livres/armorial/ I cannot read french, but it appears to be an illuminated book that was used to help identify who was who in armor. Its really beautiful to look at and gives some basis for where some of the images of Arthur and his knights come from. Plus, I mean just look at these guys:
