I had high hopes of TA indoor missions. I was remembering the magnificent indoor missions in Red Alert 1 and Starcraft, which managed to make the old RTS standby of "no production, three and half grenadiers against the entire map" into something interesting and fun.

Dammit Cavedog.

Unfortunately everything was ramping down at the time. Most of the Cavedog titles were already cancelled, Amen being the last, by the time Iron Plague came out, and it was around this time that the Cavedog division closed their doors. I don't think that played a part in the poor quality of this level, but it didn't help.

You have no idea how bad the next mission is, it's so bad that even with a walkthrough I've never actually managed to finish it.

I tried four times after recording the previous mission, two after checking a walkthrough. I have genuinely no idea if I will be able to finish it for the LP.

So I was going through my local Half Priced Books yesterday while hanging out with a friend, and what do I see behind the glass case of the older video games section but a copy of TA Kingdoms, still in its original box! Nabbed that for $8. It's definitely used, the box is worn, but it's got the original manual inside I think. Doesn't have Iron Plague as far as I know, but still.

Neruz, can there be a multiplayer portion of the LP?

Success! Finally managed to toe the line enough that none of the enemies decided to just kill me. I kind of wish I'd recorded my earlier attempts so you guys can fully understand how terrible this map is.

Instead, at the end of the mission just look at the minimap, look at the narrow windy goddamn path I've walked and remember:
A: There are zero indications as to what the correct path is beyond sudden and violent death.
B: If at any point I had wandered off the correct path more than a short distance I would have been instantly mobbed by Jungle Orcs or worse.

I spent three attempts just wandering around the southern half of the map getting my rear end handed to me because if you try and go north anywhere else than on the far right side of the map you walk into a forest of Death Totems and Jungle Orcs.
gently caress this map.

Try the shortcut, I think it was "k". I remember that there were a bunch of abilities that didn't get an icon, because intuitive user interfaces were only invented in the year 2000.

I checked with the hotkey, Helegrin cannot cloak. I think the only reason Lokken's cloak doesn't get an icon is because the space where the icon would be is instead taken up by the repair\remove debris buttons because he can build things. Helegrin though can't build so those two buttons are open, if he could cloak he'd have them.

Well, there goes that theory.

Thanks for playing through these missions Neruz. I gave up on the expansion way before this point.

I'm a bit confused as to where the Cult fits into all of this. I get that they were the whole false flag that set off Veruna to attack the Iron Bastards by mistake, but.. Aren't they a tiny group? What do they have vested in the story? Is this filler, or is the Cult actually up to something? They're a beaten down power, aren't they?

Neruz

The Cult is actually up to something; they're trying to retrieve Lokken's Bottle and its possible that the group of mages escorting the bottle were retconned to be Cult of Lokken.

Helegrin also knows what Lokken planned to do with the Bottle and intends to ensure that plan comes to fruition.

That is... kind of a weird map for an RTS, to be honest. A failed experiment, I suppose.

The thing is though... OK, they are trying to really emphasize what is going on in the world, and we saw that in the base game with the stealth mission and such. So you've got missions like this that piece together the more traditional RTS missions.

I guess the question that should have been asked was: does this contribute to the experience of the player? And you can make that argument both ways - having whats-his-name actually find Thirsha and experiencing that is a lot more immersive than having the voiceover say "guy did a thing." And having him search would no doubt be dangerous with what we know about Zhon. On the other hand, the game should be fun and that mission was not - I guess it would have been more suitable for a stealth game but this is not a stealth game.

SIGSEGV

They could have made it a lot more interesting and playable by making whathisname cloakable or with a far higher sight radius and radar radius or with recon birds or with all at once but I guess they didn't have time to make everything work given their constraints.

TA:K was the second RTS I ever played, after Dune 2, so this has been a fun trip down memory lane and also great for not dealing with those bullshit missions myself. I think I got up to one or two missions before retrieving the Heart of Thesh in Taros.

Only just started the Iron Plague Chapter 7 video, but do you go into what land units can cross water? I remember the Lich can swim and the Priest of Lihr can walk over it, and I feel safe in assuming the Mer-Warriors swim, but can any other units?

Time for another cave mission! I'm pretty sure this is the last one and we will never have to do anything like this ever again

Let's Play Total Annihilation: Kingdoms - The Iron Plague Episode 16 - Youtubular

Next time Kirenna notices that the entire Creon navy is literally sitting off-shore of Veruna's main island and capitol and finally decides to send an envoy to talk to said Creon navy instead of uselessly flailing at ironclads with wooden boats armed with harpoons; Menelos, 27th Sage of Creon finds promptly dons the biggest asshat you have ever seen in response. Chapter 17 was where kid me finally realized that Creon were actually fascist nutjobs led by a homicidal maniac and not the glorious technocratic utopia they pretend to be.

The next mission is also a proper Total Annihilation mission with base building and everything, yay! It won't last :smith:

Honestly that one wasn't too bad. I enjoyed watching the knight go ghoul slaying and slowly getting blinged out for some reason. Though it was funny that you could have probably cut down the time of the mission into two if you just built one ship and went across right away after killing that serpent.

Yeah it was, when I tested it and did some early scouting I noticed that there were a bunch of production structures that were inactive and figured they'd go active after ~10 minutes, but apparently not.

I'm honestly not entirely sure what was going on there. Maybe if I'd pootled about for long enough they'd have started making things. As you may have noticed by now missions in TA:K are very hit and miss with regards to difficulty.

Taros maybe would have, Zhon would just have them die on their way in / out. Veruna wouldn't harm one because reliability is golden in business but Elsin would definitely feel very righteous about it all.
