If I recall it's actually causing concrete problems for much of the Russian population as well, since if they're with a Russian bank on the sanction list then their credit cards stop working.

That is actually kind of worrying. Exactly how well can economic pressure work on a bunch of crazy motherfuckers? Obviously it would devastate a rational government filled with rational actors but these guys aren't exactly acting rationally.

Because the official Russian reaction so far has been "apply more sanctions motherfuckers." That isn't the conduct of a rational government, especially BECAUSE we know the sanctions are working. The rational thing to do would be to seek rapprochement with the west and do whatever you can to defuse the crisis, but instead they're doubling down on the neo-Stalinist pan-Eurasianism.

At the same time the Japanese are worried that the US wouldn't respond militarily if the Chinese opted to seize, say, the Senkaku's. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/06/world/asia/us-response-to-crimea-worries-japanese-leaders.html?hp quote:TOKYO — When President Bill Clinton signed a 1994 agreement promising to “respect” the territorial integrity of Ukraine if it gave up its nuclear weapons, there was little thought then of how that obscure diplomatic pact — called the Budapest Memorandum — might affect the long-running defense partnership between the United States and Japan. It bears noting however that the American alliance with Japan is far more important than anything Ukraine offers, and far more relevant to American interests. It should also be kept in mind that Japanese conservatives have been looking for any excuse they can find to rearm and get an power-projection military plus nukes, so this could simply be them seizing on the opportunity to push that.

Snowdens Secret posted:Looks like the Russians have moved into East Ukraine. Coordinated attacks on government buildings in multiple cities, by the same 'little green men' in matched uniforms with expensive new gear as in Crimea. Reports of seizures of armories and key rail depots. What's the endgame here? The Russians just move in tanks and helicopters and annex eastern Ukraine as well? What possible benefit is there to them doing so? I can at least see Crimea as a consolation prize for losing Kiev since it has strategic value and whatnot but eastern Ukraine is just a big hunk of land and seizing it by force does not seem to benefit Russia in any way aside from making people hate them even more.

So the Russian economy, whose growth went down from 4.3% to 1.3% from 2011 to 2013, might go into a depression this year if the past three months are any indication. Particularly if Putin makes a move on Eastern Ukraine which will bring more sanctions.

Soylent Pudding posted:Isn't Canada legit worried about Russian power projection and claiming of the undersea Arctic? Worried is a relative term. The Russians are less a security risk and more a risk to perceived territorial integrity in the Arctic, which is something the current government has prioritized and was one of the reasons Harper wanted the F-35. Nobody is worried about Russians marching down from the North Pole like they're a bunch of white walkers, the government is more worried that Russians will fly over/sail through Canadian waters and it'll be humiliating if we can't feasibly do anything to stop them. I think I've said before that in Tom Clancy world if there was an actual Russian incursion into the Canadian arctic the Canadian strategy is to call in the Americans.

quote:In some cases, Dallaire had already assigned soldiers to guard key officials but that did little good. Ghanaian troops had been posted at the home of Lando Ndasingwa, the only Tutsi in the Hutu government and doubtless a target for extremists. But when the Rwandan presidential guard burst into Ndasingwa’s home, his Ghanaian protectors fled out the back. Ndasingwa, his Montreal-born wife, Helen, their children, Malaika, 17, and Patrick, 15, and Ndasingwa’s mother, Bibiane Nyiratulira, were then executed with gunshots to the head. A UN official would later claim the Ghanaians fled because they had been outnumbered and could do little. But Ndasingwa’s sister, Louise, wonders why they at least didn’t try to take the children with them. quote:That same night another contingent of Ghanaian troops stood guard at the home of Joseph Kavaruganda, a Supreme Court judge who favoured sharing power with the Tutsis. The presidential guard showed up for Kavaruganda who was beaten and thrown into the back of a truck, never to be seen again. As he was being bundled away, his wife, Anonciata, and his children watched as the Ghanaians joked with the presidential guard and even shared a few drinks with the family’s tormentors. Anonciata and the children would later escape from Rwanda after taking refuge in the Canadian embassy in Kigali. Come on Ghana. It was a Malaysian Airlines plane carrying mostly Dutch passengers, how do the rebels, the fake rebels or the Russians benefit? Everything so far seems to point down that the rebels thought it was a cargo airplane and shot it down. So it was a mistake but that doesn't absolve them of responsibility and the fact is that 298 civilians are dead, most of whom were from NATO countries.
