It reminded me a lot of Sleeping Dogs with having characters that you enjoy watching a lot despite being, well, total loving criminals. But Sleeping Dogs isn't the only thing to have done that, neither was Raid 2. It was also interesting seeing how much of an efficient and potentially ruthless criminal Rama CAN be.

Nice heavies, especially Bejo. Is there something that has some backstory for him? Because I liked that aspect of not knowing much about a really distinct looking character.

Came in to post that I agree that it was overly long, and had too many talky scenes that didn't add much (oh wow yet another young guy wants to step up and the older more experienced one won't let him). However, thanks to the analyses of the film by a couple of you, it's made me appreciate the film more.

I think the problem is that I went into the first film without knowing anything and loved it. For this I was excited and expecting it to be the Raid but even more so, and it probably just suffered from typical sequel problems.

That got one of the best responses from the crowd. When the bat stuck in the skull everyone did a kind of laughing moan at how nasty that was.

For those of you who don't know, Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog/Prakoso) is in both movies not because he's the same character but because he's the fight choreographer and arguably the best martial artist in the whole film crew.

His character was probably the flimsiest in the film but I still thought some of his facial expressions were great.

Loved the movie, while I admire how lean the first is I think this movie is better overall. I'm glad this thread moved beyond "oh why did they need to shoehorn a plot in the first one was good without one", because there's actually some interesting analysis in here that a surface dismissal ignores. I actually found the plot and characters very engaging and didn't find it detracted from the movie at all. I would watch three hours of this.

I don't think it's Prime, but I'm not sure if there is a way to check if something is scheduled to go on Prime. That'd be great if it did.

Also, I'm reading online that a lot of folks aretalking about waiting for the Unrated Cut that was played at Sundance. The blu-ray and streaming version is the R rated, not the Unrated Cut, although I see some stores like Best Buy and Walmart promoting it as the Unrated version.

A little more research and here's an interview with Gareth Evans saying the changes are minimal and the interviewer did not even notice when he saw both versions.

http://www.hypable.com/2014/04/16/raid-2-gareth-evans-director-interview/

And a little more research says the UK version will be the uncut version.

This film was definitely worth the view, even if only for the fight choreography. Like other posters, I appreciate the fact that Evans didn't stick to the formula of the previous movie.

Something I enjoyed was fleshing out the "villains" with little pieces of fighting on their own - Hammergirl and Baseballbro getting their time in a spotlight, along with Mad Dog/Prakoso.

Mad-Dog/Prakosos piece, with his wife, was something that struck me. For a moment, I was disoriented and thought that the narrative had flashed-forward, and we were looking at a dystopic future where Rama was trapped in the criminal world - and turned over time into a hobo hitman whose wife disavowed him and refused to let him near their child. (Un)fortunately I did not get to ruminate too much on this, as Uco showed up. Nevertheless, I think Mad Dog was an interesting character as he ostensibly is someone Rama COULD have become.

I really liked the dark brooding shots, especially the introduction, the paddies/fields with the grey, grey sky overhead, the clouds pregnant with the promise of the violence to come, and the mud-splattered muck fight, which evolved slowly into more and more sterile environments (the muck of the prison yard --> the porno/drug safe-house --> the bar and finally the polished restaurant and the sterile kitchen). It's an interesting juxtaposition - the environment becomes cleaner and cleaner, but Ramas role, and position is far more grey and ambiguous as he is stained by proximity to the moral muck his role places him in

As for the violence,by the time the audience reaches the kitchen, I think the squeamishness can be relegated as an afterthought. It to me, climaxed on the train fight, watching the twin-hammers in action induced a lot of wincing. By the time we reached the restaurant, I was fairly desensitised

All in all, great movie, when the visceral thrill of the action is over, the movies plot leaves a little to ruminate on (the menagerie of villains definitely being one such thing), not too much, but sufficient for an "action" film.

For me,the Uco/Father relationship and role in the story was the biggest letdown and the most obvious flaw, audience could definitely see it coming a mile away, and honestly, I felt it added relatively little to the story, as both characters were ehh. The movie was honestly carried by the "minor" characters - Hammergirl and her brother (who initially, I thought was a love interest),the "Assassin", Eka and the unreliable "controller" who appears at the start and has a nonchalant approach to Ramas life

As for news about the Raid 3, this came up

http://www.kdramastars.com/articles/26768/20140628/the-raid-3-news.htm
Some The Raid 3 news have surfaced and it seems that "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle is going to return to the series but as a different character.
The following Raid 3 news came from Indonesian newspaper, The Indonesia Chronicles and their report states that following the massive popularity spike of the Raid 2: Berandal's "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle, Gareth Evans has reportedly added Julie Estelle back into The Raid 3 but as a different character.
Like Us on Facebook
Reusing cast members is nothing new to the Raid franchise as Yayan Ruhian aka "Mad Dog" in the Raid: Redemption appeared on The Raid 2: Berandal as Prokoso.
The Indonesia Chronicles didn't report what "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle's role would be in The Raid 3.
Aside from the Raid 3 news of "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle returning to the 3rd movie, there as a rumor that is circulating around the internet that martial arts movie superstar, Donnie Yen, would appear on The Raid 3 but as cameo only.
While Donnie Yen and Gareth Evans haven't confirmed that talks between them have occurred, seeing other Asian martial arts superstars in The Raid 3 are something that fans want to see as evidenced when the Tony Jaa rumors for the Raid 3 spread throughout the internet.
What do think about the "The Raid 3" news that was just reported? Are excited to see "Hammer Girl" Julie Estelle in The Raid 3? Sound off in the comments below!

Honestly, I don't think they need famous cameos, I enjoy the local talent.

I think that one of the main problems is that there's too much filler, and for most of the talky expositions the film felt like it was tapping its foot impatiently to get onto the next fight scene. Apart from the prison one they all lacked soul, and the weird fixations on characters. Guys.

Hammer girl was like the one out of Chocolate, but more downs'ish.

The problem is Donnie Yen is 51 years old, and you can really tell in movies like Ip Man 2 and Legend of the Fist. A lot of wire fu and heavily edited fight scenes. Of course, he has done 11 movies since then which I have not seen, so I am absolutely not the expert.

I was pretty disappointed with this movie. The fight scenes are incredible, the cinematography is a phenomenal, but man what a boring story! I mean are we supposed to feel that there's a connection between Rama and the boss's son? He's hugging him at the end but I never felt for one moment that Rama liked him. The movie didn't show us that at all.

And introducing those cool minibosses like 2 hours into the movie, what kind of stupid idea was that? They should have been introduced much sooner and done more.

Having an identical character from the first movie who looks exactly the same but is a different character... Smart move.

I would have kept the majority of it in the prison, so it would be similar to the first one but like an inverse version. Lots you could do there. Instead I found this bloated and boring. No martial arts film ever needs to be 2 and a half hours long. Shame cos the fight scenes might be the best I've ever seen!
