Right now WWE's coasting on some goodwill with most of the IWC. Bryan's got the belts, AJ lost but the new champ isn't a random Total Divas member, the Network didn't implode last Sunday, etc. Everyone's kinda chill. They will screw up again and then the DRAMA! will begin.

I think a Cruiserweight division as something to flesh out the undercard would be fine, just as it was in WCW. What makes the article wrong-headed is the idea that you'd segregate all the lower weight wrestlers into it and try and make it seem as important as the heavyweights, which A) is never happening in WWE because both Vince and HHH love big muscly guys and B) they're not really structured in such a way that they can have more than one top-of-the-card scene. Actual combat sports can make it seem like that primarily because not everyone is fighting all the goddamn time, so sometimes it's one belt up for a big fight and sometimes it's another. [C) "Muscly" is an actual word. Huh.] Of course WWE's heavy size bias means that even an undercard cruiserweights division would be hard for them to pay attention to. Like, if I had absolute power over the WWE card I'd try to move away from the old tradition of just focusing on big guys tossing each other around, but realistically that's not going to change much soon. (Plus if you think it's bad now, try watching the 1998 Royal Rumble. That was peak "everyone looks like everyone else" saturation.)

Isn't most media undergoing a decline in numbers just due to fragmentation? UFC I think is still an exception, and I'm sure the WWE's effective monopoly doesn't help, but wrestling's situation isn't unique.

The big thing is wrestling shows don't get car ads, which are your major prime time buys- the assumption being that while the lower income demo will spend money on PPVs and toys and Just For Men they don't have enough to put a down payment on a new car.

Jake the Snake is a good example of a heel using their flashy move well, to frustrate and anger the audience by suddenly bringing the match to an end. A lot of heel finishers are like that, just "no matter what, I can drop you immediately." But moves which require more setup can work as well, though it's dependent on the face selling that they've been totally demolished and this is just the final blow. (Yokozuna's banzai drop, Rusev's accolade, etc.)

It's interesting to see just how much her star has risen just in the time from Mania 31 to now. Like, she was popular then, it was a great spot and the crowd loved it, now EVERYBODY knows her. I'd say they could get her in another non-wrestling appearance but even being a guest ref presumably carries some risk of injury.

What I don't understand is how anyone who likes Rodriguez would think LU's plots are too trashy. Like I get there are still wrestling fans who don't like goofy stories and weird inhuman characters for some reason, but this is a channel that plays Lucio Fulci movies on a regular basis.

Total Divas has been a net drag on the Divas division- it gets ratings and attention, but I think that's led to them booking the Divas on RAW/SD like they're on a bad reality show, i.e. Everyone is just catty and horrible to each other for no particular reason. (This is in addition to the times they try to directly tie-in or reference events on the show, even though everything then is explicitly shown as happening months ago.) It's not like the writing for the male wrestlers is especially good right now, but you can at least discern the basic elements of storytelling most of the time- it's just clouded over by bad execution.
