Why do half the characters have straight-up Irish accents? I know there were *some* Irish immigrants at this point, but half the cast are veering into it, without any obvious pattern, or being mentioned as being Irish.

Probably none of the accents are realistic (the most common accent was more like an English west country accent I believe). But it'd be nice to have consistency

Given that modern Irish accents are plainly identifiable, its very weird to have Abe putting one on, while his father isn't. And neither of them are meant to be Irish at all.

I'm glad it seems like we're finally getting into the real meat and potatoes of all of this. They spent so long setting everything up it's ridiculous we're only just now meeting Washington.

I quite like the actor they got for him though

That depends. Have the lyrics to Rule, Brittania! changed since the 1770s?

EDIT: Apparently there are multiple versions. Go figure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_Brittania

Incredible that a show written, directed and produced by Americans, about the Revolutionary War, aired on an American TV network, would portray a significant number of Redcoats (and King George) as the villains.

I can't believe it. :aaa:

Seriously, though. There were assholes on both sides of that war, and that goes for every war that has ever been waged. Non-American viewers need to cool their heels a little bit with the "BULLSHIT WHY ARE THE BRITISH PORTRAYED AS SHITHEELS?".

As the show progresses, and if it gets multiple seasons, i'm sure you'll find that there will likely be multi-faceted apporaches to all sides of the conflict.

You think the Brits are assholes on this show? If it lasts long enough, we might get to see the French. Those goddamn smug fucks.

I don't have a problem with the Brits being villains as they are, it's just that they're either cartoonish or the show goes out of its way to hammer in how they bad they are, often both at the same time. The Continental Army has its share of fuckfaces, but it's mostly petty infighting like the one rear end in a top hat general bullying Tallmadge, or just how badly organized they are. The Continental Army hasn't openly oppressed the townspeople on a large scale yet or shat on African slaves just because they had the power to do so.

Still pretty good though. It has been steadily improving.

No, we just see one bitch who is losing her slaves and doesn't want to even though they're supposedly being freed, oh, and that continental gently caress that dicks with Woodhull. Or from earlier episodes the one spy that beats the piss out of Semico along with Tallmadge perfectly ok to kill him.
Hell, the Continentals can't hold any cities long enough to do poo poo.

The worst we've seen out of the Brits is Semico being a dick and killing that spy outright, an officer that lasted for one episode, Rogers and his cluster of dumbfucks, and the sternness of the one officer that set up shop in the local church along with the quick clip of buying eggs gone wrong. Hell, that British soldier staying with Woodhull has shown more good guy moves than anyone else in the cast.

I can't really hate Tallmadge for torturing him by virtue of what kind of guy Simcoe is. The show also said the bad shape the Continental POWs have returned in as opposed to the Brit POWs, with the one exception of Tallmadge getting overzealous on Simcoe. And as for the released slaves thing, I was getting the feeling that the Brits were lying through their teeth (seriously the Brits ran all over the colonists back then, what reason would they have to care any more about their slaves?), especially with that one mandingo fight going on.

Each week this show becomes a game of "who do I hate less" and "I guess they invented spying yesterday so that explains away the emo farmer not being detected as a spy."

Stuff like "we can't get a man into New York because the roads are guarded" makes me wonder if there is some Major demoted down to a private because he suggested common sense things like "just have people walk through the loving woods." Its not like there is some loving guy to punch tickets at each stop to make sure you stayed on the road at all times. Really all Woodhull had to do to explain his absences is just "I'm pissed I have to poo poo in a hole because no one invented toilets yet so I went on another binder and stumbled my way back from New York."

Man, even though Simcoe is a dick in this, I just can't bring myself to dislike him. The actual dude was just so cool that it carries over into the show. Hell, he was the first governor of a British colony to abolish slavery, before Britain itself did. Also, the actor is pretty charismatic, so that helps.

Well, they can't get into New York alone. You have to have someone along because they suspect a person working alone is stealing, killing and burning. So if you're seen alone, it's going to bring attention from the British. Not something you want if you're there to conduct espionage of some sort. It's not his absence that brings questions, it's him being alone when the standing orders are no one alone allowed in.

As for the spy thing, I suspect the British expect military more than civilian, hence the whole bout on "soldiers can't be spies" and the whole actual soldier spy posing as an officer gets knifed in the throat.

I mean yes, the show ain't all that great, but it's like you went and hate watched it like people did TWD and forgot everything prior.

I feel sorry for his character in RL. I've no real idea what he was like but he seemed like a decent man. I think they made him a dick just so they could give Woodhull an enemy that he could be 100% against rather than one that might drum up sympathy from the audience.

Simcoe is legit my favorite character because he's such a dick. My favorite bit was him humming the grenadiers march with the biggest poo poo eating grin.

I live in Ontario and in August I will celebrate Simcoe Day by being an rear end in a top hat to everyone and then freeing some slaves somewhere.

When the show is good it's really good. The setting and tech level really gives a lot of opportunity to show clever ways of acquiring and transmitting information. I'd really like to see more of that and less family drama.

I had to laugh at how all the commercials tried to up the tension by seeming to show the major executing someone, and then 10 seconds in he shoots a horse.

Yes but his family drama is supposed to mirror the conflict between his political loyalties. His wife represents Great Britain, an arranged marriage not of his choosing. While Chinasauras Rex, aka Anna Strong, represents America free to let anyone hop in bed with her and not pay the consequences because AIDs wasn't invented yet. In the balance is the fate of his son who represents the fledgling colonies who will either grow in freedom and prosperity, or know servitude in the ranks of the King's Fusiliers.

Of course there is also the tension of the final episode will RickMajor Hewlett be able to stave off an attack on the prisonchurch from the GovernorMajor Talmadge. Or will everyone be infected with the zombie virusSpirit of 76 and see the zombificationinsurrection of Seatuket.

Caleb was green screened terribly rowing out of Setauket. Remember, he was there to speak with Anna and Abe, and his leaving via the harbor led to a scene of two soldiers getting flogged the next episode as punishment.

Some of the effects were on part with a SyFy movie, but I enjoyed the overall story. I particularly liked the battles and skirmishes as it related to the technology at the time. People with multiple guns had the advantage, since once you fired the gun it became a paperweight until you had an opportunity to reload.
