For all of the really cool things 8.1 brings, it's frustrating that it's a step backward in certain ways.

- As stated, Music is pretty weird.
- Why does Podcasts have to be a separate app?
- Facebook integration has basically been neutered. There is no messaging function within the SMS tile, and you can't even see comment threads on facebook posts in the People tile anymore. I know this is probably at Facebook's request but, seriously.
- Has anyone noticed that a lot of the animations seem a little choppier now? Is this a symptom of the slower CPUs? It's kind of glaring at first.
- To go from having the notification bar never visible to always visible seems like the kind of thing there should be a toggle for. I liked it the way it was...
- Calendar is definitely an improvement, but could still use some refinement.

Otherwise though, it really is excellent, the "Remind me to..." feature of Cortana is a complete game changer for me. They really could've called this 8.5 or 9.0 and I wouldn't have batted an eye. Very pleased!

You'll not find me arguing about the music app being great. I would agree that it is not acceptable in terms of functionality or performance compared to the zune system. (Yes I still use the Zune client).

Podcasts is a separate app (like many things including calendar) so we can rev them faster. Also because people have been trained to look for apps and get confused when they can't find them.

Facebook chat (xmpp)/etc apis were deprecated afaik, hence the change. To retain the integration, we're allowing the apps to hook in to get as clock to parity as we can.

IMO, some of the animation changes need to be tweaked to be sped up (like the window blind effect). Subjective tastes? I dunno.

Subject of intense debate (:v:) and again i believe was based on a lot of user feedback/studies.

It's an app now, so we should be able to update it pretty easy. Post your requests/feedback on user-voice for certain, or maybe just rate and review the app.

90% Retractible
For some strange reason in the new Podcast app, coming back to it from either the lock screen or from another app seems to mess up any currently downloading podcasts.

For example, I start downloading a few podcast episodes, and I can see their status below the title of each episode. If I lock the screen and then come back to the app, the download status is completely gone. If I select an episode, the Download option is available, and tapping it will start the download from the beginning.

This means that If I'm downloading a large podcast (150MB+), I have to babysit the app to make sure the phone doesn't lock, and I can't change apps until it's finished.

I assume it's because downloads are no longer integrated with the Store, and maybe can't function in the background anymore?

Edit: Not to just crap on the new app, I'm super happy that I can now jump to any part of the timeline.

Mine went down 50% in about 2 hours. I think part of that is I have 17GB of music on it and it was taking it's time re-indexing everything.

Gotta say the home screen is awfully pretty now with the backgrounds and the new columns. I think for the 5"+ 720/1080p devices you could actually fit another medium-sized row on there with how well it works on the 520's small screen and resolution. The app list icons and text are shrunken as well, glad to see MS is getting the point much like they are with Windows 8 that being so wedded to their Metro design language over the practicality of visible information without scrolling is just stupid design differentiation for the sake of it.

Like how the status bar is mostly persistent where it makes sense now. Apps can still push it out of the way if need be for their design, the problem with WP 8 is that if you needed to quickly check, you had to swap out of the app just to see your battery. Now if the app hides it, just swipe down to get the action centre.

Oh, and the Xbox Music tile now also no longer shows the album art of the music you're playing - probably only does it for streamed Xbox Live music I guess(?) - it's probably the app that has the least reason to have the extra-large tile. Just pave over the Xbox Music's office space already for fucks sake.

They either need to add a fourth column or change the large tile to be 3 medium tiles wide instead of two, otherwise there is no way to use large tiles whilst retaining a symmetrical layout.

I'm poking through settings and for email accounts I noticed that there's an "as items arrive" setting for Gmail accounts. :stare: Push is back?

I had to relogin to my Live/Windows account and two Gmail accounts, which is fine. My Gmail account with two-factor auth isn't syncing, calendar, email, or contacts. I know the password is correct and it accepts my one-time password from the auth app. It just says "Not up to date" and gives the 801901FS error code. Deleted it and added it back several times, isn't working. My other six (yes, I know) email accounts across various providers work just swell, which makes me think it's the combination of having to relogin + Gmail + two-factor auth. It's not a totally crucial email account for me (I have Chronos Calendar, which works with Gmail calendars), but just heads up for anyone else I guess and I'll probably try again in a few days.

Also, really cool stuff: there's no more limits on how many apps can run in the background, just turn on or off as many as you wish through the Battery Sense app. :) Swipe to go forwards and back in IE11 is great, week view finally, podcasts app does what it needs, all hail Nadella.

I have the Facebook beta app and it's still prompting me to download the regular Facebook app. :v:

Wait wait wait hold the phone. XBOX Music is even worse than the prior stock music app? The one which flat out refused to read id3 tags properly and wouldn't display embedded album art? Now it chugs on indexing too?

Damnit Microsoft, I was rooting for you so hard on this one too. :eng99:

That really irks me since much of my day to day is media playback. Admittedly I'll usually only carry around 25-30 albums. Once it's done populating the index things are relatively kosher though, right? I can deal with the wonky tags and lack of art, but if that poo poo chugs switching albums so help me god..:argh:

Yeah I've given it plenty of time (and massive battery drain) to ensure it's indexed my catalog fully and it still chunks when scrolling through albums & artists at times, and has had some particularly hilarious attempts at matching album art from Xbox's music catalog to my own music.

Not a fast SD card, about 17 gigs of music but as mentioned the previous Music app didn't have this behaviour. It's not unusable and constantly jerking, but definitely not as smooth going through my collection as before.

Being able to swipe text (and having it work really, really well!) is already worth the update. Cortana just brings up Bing results most of the time, and often includes her name in the search (I don't recall ever having Siri search for "siri" if her name was included in the query), but it is only beta, so whatever. I would like to know who the dumb dummy is that chose to add game titles to the app list. That's what the game hub is for!

I have enjoyed searching for That Perfect Start Background to live behind the tiles. Low contrast, easy breezy color washes have worked GREAT. These are my two favorites so far.

What I would love is more apps offering the choice between a filled-in colored tile, or a transparent option.

I'm pretty sure if that app had to go through their own certification process, it would fail. If you're on the main now playing screen, and you use the volume controls to pause a track, the play/pause button in the music app won't reflect the change. The artist background banners show up about 20% of the time, and almost never appear on the lock screen even though I told it to. :argh:

Xbox Music is such a disaster zone currently. I can't even view my artists, as I scroll through it's just a bunch of blank 'play' buttons without artists names. Then if I can actually tap into an artists, it just sits there and doesn't show the albums.

Luckily, I can ask Cortana to 'play broken bells' and that works.
