Welp, picked up the 625 since work is going to comp me part of the price for doing some coding on it. I know it's not a high end phone or anything, but really I just need something I can take calls on and hack away at. Really dig WP8, just pulling up the 8.1 update now. Already had people tell me it was a weirdo move. I guess going from iPhone to WP is like french kissing Bill Gates over the open casket of Steve Jobs Is there a dedicated WP app development thread? I saw some questions posed in here so I guess if there isn't anything better I'll throw them here as they come up. The only one I really have right now is whether it's possible to initiate a VPN connection from C# code. As for VPN stuff, there is Windows.Networking.Vpn, which should work on WinRT apps.

I had to do the same thing after a reset to factory restore. I turned the text message backup back on after a couple weeks and everything seemed to be working. Give that a shot.

If your text message backup is sufficiently large (hundreds or thousands of messages, I'm not sure of the exact point where it becomes an issue), the sync will time-out before all of them have had the chance to download. There's no need to worry about that, with each sync it downloads more of the missing messages until it has them all. Could take a dozen or more syncs, though, which is annoying.

So if Cortana replaces the regular "Search" thing, is there no way to scan QR codes anymore? Or am I just looking in the wrong place? (edit: I mean, with the OS. I know I can download QR apps)

I do like how the Mobile Data option is now a toggle switch instead of a drop-down list, even though I wish it was supported on the Quick Actions bar. Also from checking around Google, I haven't seen anyone else comment on Podcast downloads resetting when the app loses focus, so I wonder if it's just me, or if most people can just finish downloading an episode before the 1-3 minute timer auto-locks the screen. Can anyone else with 8.1 try and reproduce this? 1: Open the Podcasts app, load an episode list for a podcast, then select an episode and hit the download button. 2: Watch the status on-screen for it to say Paused > Downloading, then hit the Windows Logo key to go back to the home screen. 3: Open the Podcasts app again (either from task screen or from the app icon). If it's like mine, you're back at the episode page, but now the download status is gone, and the download button is available again. Despite this, the wifi status claims that the phone is transferring data, but I have no idea what specifically. If I leave it alone long enough, will this podcast end up in my on-phone list, or is it just stuck in a temp folder somewhere? LentThem fucked around with this message at 06:01 on Apr 17, 2014 |

Out of all the things wrong with xbox music, the fact that you can't change the audio settings in the app is probably my biggest thing against it. Why is it an option in the menu in freaking Nokia MixRadio yet it's not an option in the stock music app where you would expect it to be? Sure this is something that the music app in iOS does as well but surely they want to be seen as being better than the competition by adding such things! Also, if you want to ask Cortana something funny, ask it what it thinks about Google, Apple, Android and iOS.

So when 8.1 was released I put my sim card back into my Lumia 920 and started using it as my main device... that lasted all of three days. It's back in my iPhone. I'm still going to develop for it, but once you use something like an iPhone 5S or Nexus 5, it's really hard to go back to that 920 hardware, even if the OS is improved. If/when there is an update to the 1020 with a better screen I would be interested in picking it up and trying again. Beyond the hardware there, there are a few other software issues at the moment really holding me back from fully committing too. Xbox Music drives me insane. I get that's the old beta version, but even when those bugs are fixed I have a feeling I still won't like it as much as the iOS and Google Play music apps. Also having to use US English really impacts my workflow when making apps. Having to switch just to test my Cortana hooks is annoying, and I wish there was an option to just enable it no matter what language your phone is set to. Also, it's more fun to speak with Siri in Japanese. .

Oh great. It looks like Internet Sharing has become more temperamental with Windows Phone 8.1. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce the problem yet but it seems that within a day of after using Internet Sharing it will no longer work. My attempts to initiate the connection from my Windows 8.1 tablet will fail and the Internet Sharing setting page will fail to load and crash back to the settings menu. The only way I've found so far to get Internet Sharing to work again is to restart the phone. It's not exactly an elegant solution, though. EDIT: I didn't even need a day. WiFi sharing broke within a few hours after heavily using Internet Sharing. This time, I also found that WiFi and Airplane Mode settings were just as broken. So I'm starting to wonder if this is an OS issue or a firmware/driver issue. Perhaps next time, I'll see if I can work around the problem by manually turning off WiFi first and then activating Internet Sharing. It's still not an elegant solution either. Excellent! The issue with the 8XT wasn't multiple Google account like I thought it was, but, rather, there appears to be general instability reported regarding WiFi and these units, either in general, or regarding secured networks. It will crash the phone, reboot, freeze, or the WiFi part craps out and it says that I "Can't do this right now" when I press on the WiFi turn on. Good to see updates are coming.

I'm assuming the updates to the Cortana app will be somewhat regular- how much of logic of that system is built into the OS, and how much is inside of the app? Put in simpler terms, as I get used to her (that feels weird to say), I begin to wonder about what the next logical features for "her" will be, and whether they can be tacked on as simple app updates, or if they will require major OS revisions. For instance, right now any directions she provides are done through Here Drive- theoretically how simple is it to then tack on regular Here Maps directions for public transit/walking?
