There are rumors of one for the fall and if you compare the 52x to the 63x they're actually pretty similar feature wise. A spiritual successor I suppose.

Turning cell data on to receive MMS is across all platforms, I think? My brother had to on his iPhone, at least. Epiphany is the best Goodreads client I've found, although I've toyed with the idea of making my own. Pin.it is good for Pinterest, Git Station is good for GitHub, I use Owl Reader for Pocket but Poki seems good too, Flickr Booth for Flickr. FoulPlay is Drastic Actions' PlayStation companion app and it's cool. There are a ton of weather apps, I use Atmosphere Weather for its live tile and the UI and Awesome Lock for my start screen.

It's all over the news, but 18,000 job cuts at Microsoft, mostly in the Nokia division across manufacturing and engineering, and X, Asha, and Nokia feature phones are dead. At least Microsoft is generous with its benefits, right?

But they literally just killed the X line that was just skinned Android + MS services? If it does happen though, I'll be sad. My squares. They're definitely coming out with another flagship soon-ish though, before Threshold: http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/17/5912289/microsoft-kills-feature-phones-in-favor-of-windows-phone quote:Microsoft’s devices group is planning to "shift our flagship engineering efforts towards new flagship products timed with the next release of Windows and Windows Phone," meaning we’ll likely see even more high-end Windows Phones for the release of codename "Threshold" next year. "To drive success in the short term, we plan to focus our high end go-to-market strategy on the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, and other high-end products that we will be announcing very soon," says Harlow.

"Not much more money" is relative, to be blunt about it, and what a middle class developer in Seattle and a middle class factory worker in, say, Vietnam, can afford are very different.

I think I'll actually find a way to get my hands on a dual SIM version; might be tricky in the US. And the flip covers look nice. The GSM version of the 520 sold for ~$130 in Vietnam, so this is a tiny bit cheaper if the prices are comparable Edit: There's a page to compare the 520, 630, and 530: http://www.nokia.com/global/products/compare/?action=productcompareaction&products=3767942-3459516-2204302 Mecca-Benghazi fucked around with this message at 10:06 on Jul 23, 2014 |

Good luck to you thestoreroom! I think the 4 GB internal is the one that really sticks out but I also strongly suspect this is going to be positioned as a first smartphone, even more so than other Lumias, so it makes sense in that regard.

http://blogs.windows.com/windows_ph...w-features.aspx Tl;Dr: 8.1 update 1 will be rolling out on the dev preview to include proper app folders, more enterprise stuff, and I guess an improved Xbox music, and Cortana is going to be beta in China (Mandarin only, nicknamed Xiao Na) and the UK, and alpha in Canada, India, and Australia

Cyan is rolling out on AT&T 520s at least. I hope when Cortana is ported to more languages, we get to choose languages regardless of region (I don't care if they're alpha); a Cantonese or Vietnamese Cortana would be really cool for my parents and I'd like to muddle through with my terrible Arabic.

Folders are cool. I wish you could tap anywhere outside the folder to close it, instead of just on the folder and the black space it makes on the start screen when expanded.

I keep reading that you don't need to downgrade when cyan comes out, because firmware and OS updates are separate, just bundled.

You have an Lumia right? If nothing is happening, you'll have to use the Nokia recovery tool (you need a windows machine I think) for your region. Luckily 8.1 backups quite a bit, including the start screen, so you can use that to downgrade to 8.0, upgrade up to 8.1 update 1, then sign in and get your apps back. You might have to sign back in to some of your stuff and I hope you don't play a lot of games because your progress might be lost.

At 6:30 or so, I left the library with about 50% charge left and went home. It's now 8 and down to 19% (I noticed because I saw the battery saver icon on). All I did was open Nextgen Reader, browse SA, and send a text. The battery saver stats say Cortana, Skype, the messages app, and some of my email accounts went nuts in the background. This really hasn't happened before, it's kind of weird. On update 1, dev preview, no cyan because I don't feel like logging back in to all my stuff and the bitlocker fix can wait.

Engadget is saying that ATT will be getting the W8 (that's what I'm calling it ), but didn't release any details as to when, which makes me think it's a timed exclusivity thing for Verizon like with the 1020 and AT&T. edit: okay, now my post makes sense Mecca-Benghazi fucked around with this message at 00:42 on Aug 20, 2014 |

That's actually a really helpful write-up; my mom wants to unlock her 520 and give it to relatives and her main complaint about the 520 is how its screen collects dust and it sounds like the 63x has some major improvements in that area. Or maybe I'll just get her the 730 so she can skype. Oh and drastic actions, great updates to the Awful reader app, although a copy of your twitter endorsement from lowtax on the login page would be better and more hilarious imo. It's kind of crashing when I open certain pages in certain threads (when you open the thread back up on the next page, things are fine); my guess is embedded youtube videos but I'll see about reproducing it and maybe getting off my rear end and helping you out at least w/r/t poking around at the XAML throughout the app.

At IFA, Nokiasoft announced the 730 and 830, which you can read about in their blog: http://conversations.nokia.com/2014/09/04/morelumia/ They look solid for their price points. What's of more immediate interest is Update 1 and Nokia Denim: http://conversations.nokia.com/2014/09/04/lumia-denim-update/ basically, better and faster camera, always listening Cortana with "hey Cortana," and Bing apps on the glance screen, like weather updates. Q4 2014 including carrier testing.

Bluetooth works for me when pairing my phone to my surface for Office remote, but that's probably no help. Bude, I do get that no audio bug once in a while, but only with Cortana. Never had it happen to music, calls, notifications, alarms, and the like. I do keep the keyboard silent on purpose.

Something that's been bugging me for a bit: some of my facebook events are doubled in the calendar for 8.1. I can't seem to find a pattern, as it's both invited to events and events I'm attending, regardless of whether I clicked on the event in the calendar to take me to the event's page or not, but sometimes Facebook events feel like doubling on me. It doesn't really affect usability, just that part of me that doesn't want to see the symbol for overlapping events when nothing's overlapping. I got the doubled events to go away occasionally by hitting "not going" on the ones I was going to then hitting "going" but just now one of the events I did that on decided to double itself again. I don't have any Facebook event syncing going on with any email accounts and I'd say it's a 50/50 shot at whether or not the event decides to double. Edit: I think I fixed it, like all things, by uninstalling then reinstalling the app. I hope the doubling doesn't return. Mecca-Benghazi fucked around with this message at 05:47 on Sep 20, 2014 |
