Did the Caps screw up big time by firing Boudreau? Are they currently wasting Alex Ovechkin's prime years by trying to figure out a new hockey strategy, instead of just sticking with Boudreau's old style (that was possibly ineffective to win a cup) of extreme offense and almost no defense? They never got past the conference semifinals, but drat they played an exciting game a few years ago.

A bad owner can be one that interferes in operations (like forces trades/bad contracts, or won't approve trades, or makes lineup decisions) when he has no business doing so or one that refuses to spend money. Or for someone like Eugene Melnyk (owner of the Senators), both! Bad management is just...bad management. GMs drafting poorly, handling signings poorly, mismanaging the cap, messing up trades. Alienating your star goalie(s) and making him (them) hate it on your team so much that they want nothing more than to get the hell off your team to not have to deal with your dumb rear end anymore. It's kinda the same in all pro sports. There are just some teams with lovely owners that refuse to do what's needed to make a winning team. Usually it's because they can get away with it and still make money so why bother?

It's not always refuse to do so, a lot of times they are very unable to do so because all their processes are hosed up. Nobody sits there and thinks "Let's be bad now!" with the exception of Florida.

It's also the case that not all markets/locations are created equal. This mattered more when there wasn't a salary cap and players got to free agency much more quickly, but it's still a factor now. Playing in a Canadian market involves pressure and media attention in a whole different stratosphere from even the most popular US markets, some cities just have terrible climates or really suck, and to a certain extent most FAs with a choice don't want to go to a really lovely team, so it becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. And then there's Edmonton, where you have all three factors and also their VP of hockey ops essentially tried to blackmail a player into paying back a couple million dollars worth of bonus money he'd already been paid that he was legally entitled to by contract, or he wouldn't be traded

And to be fair, almost every team in the nhl was bad at some point over the last 10 years. The lifetime for teams is build, develop, be good, get really old, be awful, rebuild. The difference is that the always awful teams don't handle the rebuild and develop phases very well. It's a pretty strategic part of the lifetime and bad gms are reaaaally bad at it. On the other hand there's teams that handle everything really well, and are almost always pretty good like Detroit, who've made the playoffs since 1990. They are getting pretty old though and were more shaky this season than I can remember seeing them, so we might see a true rebuild in Detroit not to far down the road.

Europeans seem to take worlds a bit more seriously, but since the Olympics have allowed NHL players the significance of the world championships has decreased in North America. Additionally, the world championships take place at the same time as the NHL playoffs, and players have almost always preferred to participate in those instead of the international tournament. In lockout years like 2004-2005 you saw really great competition because more top players came than normal, but this usually is not the case. I don't think they're as fun to watch as the Olympics, but they are interesting because you'll see more national teams that normally do not make the Olympic tournament such as France, Italy, Germany, and Kazakhstan, among others. A lot of these countries have an NHL player or two and it can be fun to watch this smaller hockey nations play. Sometimes you get cool upsets too. Last year France, who has a single NHL player, beat Russia, a team of mostly NHL and KHL all-stars, in the preliminary stage. Players are selected by being invited by the national team. Some players go, some decide they'd rather spend the offseason doing other stuff. As a result you get rosters which are a mix of borderline NHL/minor league players and bonafide NHL superstars. Additionally, if a team is eliminated from the NHL playoffs, a player will sometimes be invited to join the national team roster even though the World Championships are already in progress.

A friend of mine knew Mike Fisher in high school, and she insists he was an "annoying little poo poo" (oddly enough she looks a bit like Carrie Underwood herself). I wouldn't be surprised if this were common to professional athletes in general, though. The being hyper-competitive shits, I mean. Looking like Carrie Underwood probably isn't that common in the NHL.

He's not good at angles, he does some really, really stupid things trying to play behind the net like Brodeur (honestly he's gotten better about this, he used to do dumb poo poo like tonight at least weekly), and under pressure he does this thing where he just kinda flops forward flailing around. When he has good defense, this works okay for him. Also he's a pretty bad head case and has some real confidence issues which lead to him failing more and more spectacularly as the season goes on. He spent a lot of time in therapy in the off season and he's looking a little better, but after tonight a lot of people are expecting him to buckle even worse because he's notorious for melting down after a bad game or two.

Yeah that too. Every time you hear "Stanley Cup winning goalie!!!" you can be sure that whoever says it either doesn't watch the pens play, or is Dan Bylsma. He's just not good. Picking up Vokoun to give him a roughly equal or better backup was a good move but then Vokoun's leg blew up. The Pens have the material to trade for a good goalie, but management apparently drank their own koolaid regarding him being good.

Because Ray Shero is a hilariously awful drafter and he has no homegrown role players to play bottom six minutes, leaving Crosby and Malkin to get eaten alive by shutdown defense all the time. Also, their defense is really meh. Fleury is, to me, an obviously bad goalie who, like others have said, had one good season. Steve Mason won the Calder trophy his rookie year, then he was awful for a long time, and probably still is. Teams misjudge this constantly.

GMs that panic-signed players, a revolving door of coaches, high-demand UFAs going "lol no" and signing for less for other teams and other shenanigans that resulted in near fan-revolt this season. Oh, and you also have a fanbase that could be considered to have Borderline Personality Disorder when it comes to attachment to their team. Thanks for the answers guys. I haven't really followed hockey much until I came across the first playoff game midway through and figured now's as good a time as ever to get into it, since I've always thought it was a cool sport and just never committed to watching it regularly. Being the local team of course I'm watching the Pens. For some reason my mother really likes Fleury and I had no idea why, but I guess maybe the sympathy factor would make sense. Or just because she's a fanatical Pens fan and he's the Pens goalie
