Pretty much. My mind knows that Tropico 4 was a quick cash in with most of what seperates it from Tropico 3 being dlc, but my heart loves it anyway.

I'm just hoping that each of the 4 eras will at least be on par with Modern Times in terms of unique buildings and such.

Nah, Tropico 4 was more than a mere cash-in. It was a refinement. Most of the basic buildings may have been the same but they added in a ton of little things like all the faction leaders, mini-quests, Modern Times' stuff and upgradeable traits. What they added in was, essentially, stuff that kept the game fresh even on repeat plays.

Things I'd like the new game to do to improve the political simulation.

Make factions actually organize, they should hold meeting, vigils, random protests and a strong communist faction should be able to push up wages. If a faction member watches another member get assassinated or the faction leader gets arrested this should trigger immediate protests.

Importing goods and specialists should increase the liberty pushback. Specialists should be prone to leaving if they don't like it on your island, if you prevent them from leaving with no emigration policies this should lower your relations with the powers.

Make living standards affect the birth rate. Dirt poor farmers should have more kids and a richer society should have a lower birth rate.

Allow schools and other underground services to pop up similar to shacks. If your healthcare sucks don't be surprised if witch doctors become a thing.

Make the day/night cycle actually matter. People should work on a goddamn schedule.

Agreed. It'd be nice if the Tropico series followed a few others and gave you a discount if you owned a previous entry, just to avoid it feeling like you bought the same game with slightly more paint, though.

From that German video from earlier, I'm actually kinda bummed that the road is stuck on the grid as well. I mean, it wouldn't make sense for it not to, but fuuuuck me if I didn't love to make winding roads across my island for that "carved out" look or just trying to make a road around my volcano at impassable road grades.

You can, can't you? the video has curved roads in it.

Yeah the roads in tropico were always free-form but snap to 90 when needed at the ends. Unless you have procedurally generated form-fitting buildings you pretty much have to do that or you get into bullshit like Simcity2013 or Cities XL where you have square buildings trying to conform to curved non-grid roads so gently caress you you can't build that building there because the road is 0.05 degrees off. Developers need to gently caress off with the spline roads until they figure out non tile based buildings.

At least tropico gave us lots of tiny details to fill the ugly spaces between buildings.

Holding shift disables the snap-to, by the way.

What I wish Tropico had was a way to lay concrete. I really don't mind all the square buildings not fitting adjacent to my curvy roads but all the dirt and grass patches in my maze of concrete is an eyesore and I don't want to spend the time laying down trees and shrubs just for the 3x3 square of concrete they add. Just let me throw down a blanket of concrete!

Baronjutter

"Tiny Trains"

That would be so nice. I often found my self doing exactly that: just laying down a fountain or statue or something just for the concrete.

\/ Yep, cities XL did a lot of things right, or planned on doing a lot of things right, or sort of tried to do some things right...

That's one thing CitiesXL did right: pick from different types of filler terrain to plop down into those spots. Parks, concrete, whatever (I think that was CitiesXL).

Anyway some of the pictures that show up on google images when you search for Tropico 5 are pretty neat looking. Definitely doesn't just look like a new coat of paint although they are also definitely preserving the art style (which I like).

It's still the exact same engine and base game though. It's just new building models and a coat of paint on the interface. That won't bother me though if the gameplay is significantly improved. Hell just tropico 4 with some new buildings and an actual challenge from the factions would be an instant buy for me.

Upper right corner... Missiles. I think I know what the multiplayer is now. A lovely RTS :( Please don't disappoint us Kalypso!
On the second picture, it looks like areas have been filled in with concrete, so there is hope. A bit over the middle, what looks like a domed building with a concrete area next to it, with some trees. Thought it might just be the trees that made the concrete...

Yeah I don't mind either, I'm just glad they updated the graphics a bit that's all. As long as the gameplay is the same or better than T4 I'll be all over it.

Hopefully not :( There were launching missiles in the last game, too.

Although it could be fun if the army is able to get micro'd. Both players start building on the same island, eventually they run out of space or resources and declare war on the other.

Sounds like a lot of extra programming work though.

Oh here's another tiny one I could use: a way to select more than one building at a time so that I can add a/c to my apartment buildings without developing RSI.

It's odd how there's barely any gameplay vids to be found for a game that's launching in two weeks. I'm very intrigued, but I'd like to know a lot more about the game. The only thing that's really stuck out for me so far is farms with field grids, so you can place them closer together without having to guesstimate where the game will choose to put the fields.

Not that I can recall, but it's odd for a game to come out of an established studio in this day and age with so little PR.

I seriously doubt you'll get burned as long as you don't expect some amazing revolutionary Tropico experience. :v:

I wonder if most of their sales are in Europe? They often seem to have a lot more German PR than English.

It is really weird though. Their website doesn't even mention Tropico 5.
