You're correct on this one, she's not versed in moonspeak so she speaks in broken Japanese which is quite adorable in it's own right. Of course she thinks in her native tongue so is actually coherent. The OP needs to add in that Akari (It hasn't been made super obvious, but it will next episode) is a total brocon, but she loves the 'hardass sapper' side of him, not the unemployed slacker that he's portrayed as occasionally in the first few episodes. She also has a fascination with taxidermy, especially when it involves her beloved Tooru. Edit: Dan7el posted:I have to admit, the whole idea of the saboteur thingy is pretty interesting. They say the magic words and they become these uber-warriors. I'd like some backstory on that. Also, are the two really brother and sister? I get the idea they're not flesh-and-blood siblings. From what's released of the manga, the Iron Blood transformation is a family trait, not a technique inherently trained into all saboteurs. I think of saboteurs as more like breaching specialists but it appears their skillset also includes infiltration and assassination. ViggyNash posted:This made me groan a bit. I would have liked it better if she still looked like Dominica, but took on her (his? its?) own personality. Well, the dragon didn't want to be constantly tied to it's dead master so getting rid of the appearance and personality of Dominica seems fitting. Doesn't justify the dragon turning into a loli though.

Overlord K posted:Huh. Given what's out of the manga so far, I expected this episode to be very, very different, so now I'm completely and utterly stumped about what's going on in the manga side of things. I mean, the current scanlations end right before they fight Dominica, so here on I'm largely clueless, but the setup was almost entirely different. I know what you mean, there was the whole "Chaika looks like my little sister" thing that was left out entirely and was replaced with the egotistical statues and self-portraits, and unlike the spontaneous forest hotspring it wasn't changed to avoid cheesy fanservice. They even left out the part where they decided against poisoning Dominica entirely. There's a lot of little things missing from the manga, which is a real shame

AVeryLargeRadish posted:Well, to be fair (possible LN spoiler):according to the LNs they were raised together, but not as siblings. They grew up in a military training camp as child soldiers with a bunch of other kids that were also trained to do military stuff. Also remember that in japanese brother and sister are words that can be used with people that are not related to you, they can simply denote a certain level of closeness or respect. Closeness meaning the desire to have the target of your affection stuffed so you can have them forever, even after they die. Such is love, I guess

It's because it's a foreign language, so a Chaika fusion wouldn't suddenly make them fluent in this other language. I'd be disappointed if they took away her broken speech patterns. Proclaiming her reactions like " surprised!" makes her so much more endearing and amusing to watch.

Nikolai is the wingman, isn't he? I have a ton of respect for those types of characters.

Cao Ni Ma posted:I think its sort of funny because both females are giving out weird stink eyes and Toru is just looking down sort of submissively. I wonder if it has to do with peoples accounts of Akari bossing him around and Chaika paying for his food. You might be onto something there, and I'd love to think that is the reasoning behind him looking like the 'okay guy'.

Meanwhile, Frederika is being irrelevant to the plot by running away. So much for a mighty dragon

Eej posted:Saboteurs are raised and trained to live solely for killing. Their high skill but more importantly their code of loyalty is probably the only reason why they were ever accepted at all. It's a pretty amazingly bleak outlook on life for a protagonist in a shounen manga, really. One thing that the Legend of Dragoon taught me was this; you should only fight to protect something. Most Shounen anime/manga leave that 'something' as friends or the home village, but some (this show is a great example) use something a little more complex for the MC's reason to fight. He isn't doing so to protect something tangible, he's fighting to protect his way of life given the limited scope of his skillset. I personally think it's a great change from the usual "I fight for my friends " trope.

Mordaedil posted:I think it almost certainly because she was on Toru's bucket list. "Oh, well, you know, if Akari and Fredrica were dead, then you know." I viewed that scene as more of "Frederika is a dragon that wants to kill me and Akari is Akari, so you're relatively normal by comparison." I guess the whole meal ticket thing would've been part of his subconscious. Still, Chaika's response to being only the 'least worst of' was adorable as gently caress.

Artificer posted:So I was thinking of picking this up and I looked around a bit for more info on it.... Well, the main characters are child soldiers trained as saboteurs, and of course there is no work for them in a world of peace. MC is totally cool with the possibility of not-Exodia being resurrected by accident because it will lead the world to to war again, where he and his sister's skills will actually be of use again and he can actually become employable. MC isn't a villain, but think of the seried as a D&D campaign where half the party is chaotic neutral (Chaika's more lawful neutral I guess, and Frederika's at least lawful evil). It's got some really nice fight scenes and the characters are pretty competent and likeable. Definitely try out a few episodes before you dismiss it.

A satisfying end to the season, but I liked the fight with that knife brat despite it not being much of a 'fight': stand up, turn and stab.
