Carrier pigeons aren't extinct. You guys are thinking of passenger pigeons, which I am not sure were even ever used as message carriers. Don't feel bad though, I just watched Ghost Dog and a character in that movie makes the same mistake. I guess it's pretty easy to confuse the two.
