Semi-related answer, the wrestler Raven has said in interviews since leaving 'the biz' (of wrestling, not porn) that it is appropriate as a fan if you see him in the street to say "Hey Raven, can I have an autograph," and that generally other preformers are the same way, and don't want you saying "Scott Levy, I loved your work in WCW!"

Even Oprah doesn't interview Tom Mapother, it's Tom Cruise, and backstage it's the same.

Economics questions!

What is the typical cost of an average production? What proportion of that cost is paid to the girls themselves? What is the return on investment now as compared to before the tubes? Is the industry waiting/ripe for its own version of Steam that makes paying for porn the norm again?

That figure can vary widely on what a production costs. It greatly depends on the genre and the caliber of performers you are hiring. On average a quality production, after the cost of performers, makeup, crew, location, editing, artwork, and replication/printing would run between 22,000 to 28,000. A project that is story driven and has more elaborate sets/costumes and larger crews could start 40 to 50k and go all the way up to 100 to 200k.

On the productions that are under 30k the majority of that cost is the performers. I would say 65 to 70% of that is going to them. On bigger productions that percentage is much less due to the more elaborate locations costing serious money.

A return on that investment greatly depends on your market strength (brand value) and your distribution methods. The top tier companies are relying on revenue from physical media (DVD), Video on Demand, Membership sites, Broadcast and Mobile, though mobile isn't a big revenue stream.

The problem is that unless you are a well branded company, the buyers can bleed you. For example at Evil Angel I own my movies. I have to have them completely finished 8 weeks before street date. Meaning the movies are edited and mastered and the boxcovers and artwork is all done. That 8 weeks is both to double check everything, what is sometimes called QC (quality control) and then to allow time for the DVD's to be replicated. It also allows time to get the movies prepared for Internet, VOD and Broadcast. In adult street date usually means all platforms. So my productions come out on the Internet, VOD and DVD on the same date. So I have funded my movie and it won't be on the street for anyone to buy for 8 weeks after I've turned it in. The distributors who then buy these products have upwards of 120 days to then pay for it AFTER the street date. So as you continually put out movies, you could have 100,000 or 200,000 worth of product on the street before you ever see a dime of profit. The profit you start getting is for product you put out 6 months earlier.

I think the Steam/iTunes concept would be difficult to create for adult. It would need to be a large mainstream carrier that offers both adult and mainstream movies for sale. The VOD sites like AEBN, Hotmovies, Gamelink and Videobox sort of fill the void of the iTunes model. A consumer can pay for X amount of minutes a month and literally watch every new release that comes out from every company. Even I pay for minutes on those sites and 20 or 30 bucks can buy you a large amount of time to watch a massive library of content. And you only pay for what you watch.

After awhile I began to dislike the more extreme fisheye look of that. I ended up investing in a much nicer piece of glass that is still very wide, but doesn't have the distortion.

What I like about the fisheye look is how to makes a girls butt or breasts look very round and very big.

I no longer use that earlier fish eye lens and haven't used it in well over a year.

Also, in their personal lives, are porn actresses very relaxed in casual sexual relationships? Meaning they meet a friend-of-a-friend at a party, they think he's cool - would they be more likely to have have sex with him as they may view it as "not as big a thing to do" as the general public would? Like, when a "normal" girl would meet you at a club and make out with you, would a porn actress instead be willing to sleep with you?

You have to look at it from their perspective. Pretty much every moment of the day they are hit on. On their social networking sites they are constantly hit on. When they come to set they are hit on in some fashion. Most of them are very attractive so in public they get hit on. If they are popular then they obviously get noticed.

People always assume because they make porn they are easy. They aren't. If anything that are even more selective, because they are already having sex on a frequent basis so in order to do it for sure pure fun it is going to require a bit more meaning for them. That doesn't mean they don't date normal guys. Many absolutely do. But at the end of the day they are women.

HD (2k) is generally compressed to 8-10Mbps. 4k is 4x as big and, unless I'm missing something, would be in the 30-40Mbps range.

Answers to this question will vary - you can compress it at whatever rate you want, and depending on what kind of blowhard you're dealing with, they will complain at varying levels about the compression. If you're watching that beautiful nature footage on Discovery, it's probably being compressed down to 4-6Mbps. But the footage that was delivered to Discovery was probably compressed 30-50Mbps.

If you are referring to companies outside adult or mainstream companies, many do business with adult, but try to conceal it.

Common example is a company like Time Warner or Verizon. They do big business with adult in their broadcast division. Same goes for some of the major Hotel chains.

The two biggest would be Visa and Mastercard. And both those have huge influence over what you see on the Internet. They both have divisions in their company that requires them to review the content the adult company wants to be processed for. If they don't approve of the content, then that site can't process that credit card.

I'm honestly not sure how this situation with Comcast/Netflix would effect adult. Adult has been streaming video for so long now. Much longer then any mainstream company. On the membership sites most users are downloading the video to save later and watch. It would really only affect the Video on Demand sites.

I imagine their footprint is so much smaller to something like Netflix or Hulu.

August is beautiful and such an easy going person. That stereotype of Canadians is definitely true with her.

I would say about half the performers date outside the industry. They nearly all go through the process of trying to date inside the industry. For some they prefer it, others find it causes problems and so they try to have relationships outside the industry. Some are even married.

They date all walks of life. As I stated in an earlier post, they are still attractive women. The only major difference is everyone assumes they are going to have sex with them because of their job. The opposite is usually true. They tend to be highly selective for recreational sex.

On the straight side, the norm is frequent testing. On the gay side, the norm is condoms. Ignoring the statistical starting risks of the two populations (different but not 50x different), condoms should be safer since there's always a window for false negatives (plus the risk of faked test results). The problem is not all gay studios/sites are 100% condom 100% of the time.

How does the production of a softcore porn movie differ from hardcore, besides the obvious one scene hardcore movies? I also see a lot of hardcore actors that also do softcore and softcore that do hardcore. Is softcore a way for some actors to break into the hardcore scene to see if they are ready for it or is it just another way to make some money? Also, this might be a stupid question, but at any point in a softcore movie is penetration happening or is everything completely simulated?

There are two sides to softcore. Softcore is where no penetration can be viewed. The penetration is hidden from the viewer. It also tends to be no direct shots of the genitalia.

The majority of hardcore productions shoot a softcore version of the same scene. Companies do it this in a variety of ways. Some shoot the scene with multiple cameras. One camera is hard only and one camera is shooting only soft angles. Others will shoot the scene and then go back and shoot soft versions of those positions. The soft version is then licensed for broadcast. When a hardcore production is shot soft, it is up to the performers how they want to hide it. They can simulate it or they can have sex for real, but hide the penetration.

The Cinemax or "Skinemax" movies you see on late night cable are usually a completely separate production. Cinemax produces their own softcore movies where the sex is completely simulated. Their product is only softcore. They cast actors for those productions from both the adult talent pool, because they are more comfortable with being naked for the camera. They also cast actors that are not adult performers, but must be fine with performing fake sex.

In the Cinemax softcore productions the men wear this sock during the simulated sex scenes.

I'll break down how I do it. However keep it mind different companies do different things.

Model arrives and gets into makeup.

After makeup model does her paperwork, includes model release and has copies made of her IDs. This is to comply with a federal regulation called USC 2257.

First thing we shoot are solo photos of the model. These are called "pretty girls". These photos are used in the artwork for the scene, including DVD boxcover or the in the ads and tours you see on membership sites.

Depending on the performers and the type of scene you are shooting it can then go in a few different directions.

Some scenes are "story boarded" with photos first. This means the performers act out the plot elements, but in a mime like fashion while pictures are taken. These types of "story boarded" images are most often seen on sites like Brazzers or Naughty America.

Those story boarded photos then lead into hard core photos of the sex.

The performers put their clothes back on, get back into the makeup chair for touch ups and then we setup for video.

They then do the intro all over again for the video, which leads into the sex.

If there is no plot or if there is no need for the story board photos, then the performers do all the video and then we break and do photos of the hard core sex and then resume the scene and complete it.

If the scene is cut down to 30 minutes, most likely your shooting 40 to 45 minutes of video which can take several hours. If the scene is longer then that after being edited, then there is a lot more footage you shoot.

There are instances where you sometimes shoot sequences out of order. This tends to happen more so with features, because you are dealing with sometimes complicated dialogue or settings that require certain lighting. You might shoot the sex first and then go back afterwards and shoot the dialogue.
