I should probably switch to electric furnaces now that I am flush with efficiency modules, but I have a coal line snaking across my base feeding the smelters. In reality I am sure my entire base should be stripped down and rebuilt. I was kind of lazy with the layout to get green science, as I just wanted to get it fast. My previous bases had better thought out layouts.

I'm not sure why anyone would ever use electric furnaces. They're bigger, suck power, and you've got more solid fuel than you know what to do with during plastic/lubricant refinement to shove into steel furnaces. The electricity savings alone are worth avoiding them.

It'd be nice if they smelted at 3.0 to make them at least somewhat desirable if you've got massive amounts of power.

I like the 90 degree inserters. Those are pretty sweet. I'd like those and the extended belts integrated into the base game, to be honest. Maybe the red could go 8 and the blue 16 squares or something. I do sort of like the optional side of the belt inserters, although maybe a one-square device to move all items either left, right, or merge would be okay too.

I dunno, big biters are just so strong my power armor setup (7 lasers, 2 fusion, 2 exo, 2 batteries) can't really take them out even with the piercing shells in the combat shotgun. I end up having to bum rush no more than 3 biter nests at a time and murder them down before the big biters spawn to eat me. I end up having to avoid any more than 3 nest clutches.

Accumulators for your capacitance, thankfully they are cheap and build quick.
Flame Turrets are mod-only at the moment.

They reveal faster. They always go in a circular pattern from where they were placed, and in a default world gen, 1-2 isn't really enough to even reveal an expansion patch by time you need it. Later, once you have a sizable area explored, it goes absurdly slow unless you have an array of them.

Sensors have detected pockets of material critical to our advanced tech. They seem to be present on the surface, so no digging should be required - we have structured a mission around gathering and utilizing them immediately.

Finished rocket defense in just over 30 hours. I way-overestimated how many processors I needed for it - I had two factories from about mid game to stock up and I had thousands of blue ones left over.

That solar plant above was awesome, as was the smelting block. I ended up having six by the end. I also used the 3:2 wire/chip layout, the fantastic refinery/chem plant underground pipe breakout thing, and various other tricks to tweak items on belts.

I didn't use trains but I did try late game steam (it sucks) before switching to solar.

All in all a fantastic game that I recommend to everyone on the fence.

Look a bunch of pages back for how someone used logic to swap between accumulators and steam engines. They did it by enabling a grabber to pick up coal and put it in a chest. You can use the same logic to grab items from your main bus to a smaller bus.

That would only work on a priority system though, not a queue system.

Why are the two sides separating in position? Isn't the way the belt works is a series of metal leaves that continue on a track, including corners? Even if it was one piece of fabric that continuously turned, the outer edge would rotate as fast as the inner.
Total distance around the track. "Inner" has significantly less distance to travel, and now it shows.

It's the same reason why any racetrack has the inner path start ahead of the outer.

That's true in reality but it's not the way objects are simulated anymore. Most likely there is an associated speed vector given to them based on the belt they are sitting on. There was a blog post about it a few months ago if you want to dig up the specifics.

There are a few ways to do it imo, if you look at the wiki builds there is a cube shaped structure that has a decent way of doing it. I don't now how many builds work with the new inserter belt change though.

Once you get inserter upgrades, trains can transport way more volume. The problem is that you just really don't need that much volume. Two belts of iron and copper is pretty much all a reasonable sized factory needs, and you can mostly get by with one blue belt of each.

Trains only come into their own with massive consumption and you have to deliberately build a factory for that.

Bhodi

Pillbug
Not with concrete and a mk2 crammed full of speed enhancements!

One blue belt factory can build more belts than you can use; they construct really fast and are easy to just run along and put down. Plus, they only take iron and lubricant.

Trains require building a whole bunch of engines which are made slowly and can't be manually crafted, plus a coal feed, plus stations, offloading inserters and chests, and the most valuable asset, space to make the station.

It's a lot of work, especially when most people play on rich/big/enhanced patches that are generally not too far from your initial start.

No reloading of turrets directly; you'll have to put a requester chest and belt+inserters if you want to reload guns. Or, just use lasers like everyone else because they are way better.

They will grab repair kits out of provider/storage chests and use them, however.

Bailed on my Bob's mod game after getting red circuit equivalents up. I like all the new end products, but there are so many intermediate steps that scaling production up is a nightmare. I think it would be a lot better with maybe half as many base materials and intermediates.
yeah; I wanted to like bob's mod but it was just too many pointless, tedious steps.

The game's progression is kind of weird to me in general - once you get to green science packs, there's a ton of things to research but not a whole lot you can build until you can actually get the blue packs / oil production up.

Maybe it's just the way I progress? I mean my path is generally

burner miners into smelters -> 14/10 steam power -> Temp Red Packs -> mining drills into 8x2 row of iron, copper smelters -> 4 steel smelters -> Bus creation -> Steel furnace upgrade -> Red + Green Packs from bus -> aux factories (red belts, gears, green circuits, pipes) -> AP ammo -> A million oil/fluid researches while I clear out nearby biter nests

But then it sort of devolves into "well i need an entire oil production setup to do anything else, it seems like the things that open up with "just" green packs require higher tier things to make, like batteries, red circuits, and I feel like once you get oil you might as well just get blue packs because then you can get bots and solar power and advanced oil processing.

I end up sitting for quite a while with nothing to research because I'm trying to get the million different factories and assembly lines up all at the same time.

I still need to come up with a good inserter chain. My belt/pipe/engine setup is OK but not great, it needs to be reworked to be cleaner.

Hmm. you don't make gears to order? And a separate inserter factory per chain?

As soon as you get green science automated and unlock piercing ammo it's almost mandatory that you take a stack and do a wide circle of your base and wipe out any nests. Then, any time you get attacked you have to run out and clean the nest they came from before they upgrade into something you can't handle. There's just too much of a gap between piercing and lasers and you can't clear them again until you get the piercing shotgun ammo post alien and blue science.

Lasers do work as a defense all the way up to huge biters.

greens aren't that bad, the whole chain is only iron and copper. It's getting your mines set up that sucks, imo.

That is totally in keeping with factorio madness but you can click ? on my name for a cleaner version that scales

I finished the supply campaign, that was pretty tough. After a few false starts, I was able to keep up, barely. It's easier since the biters are passive, but the time crunch is real.

If you're a veteran looking for a new challenge, give it a try. It's available on the steam version even if you only got the basic version.

Balancing the belts is is important because a lot of times you have all the factories on one side of the belt and all their inserters pull from the opposite side of the belt. This feeds back into your main bus and so it's common to have one side of your bus belt completely stationary. It's the same idea with two belts, but worse, because if there's only one belt your inserters will fall back to the close side, but if it's on a separate belt you can be starving that part of your factory.

I think I saw somebody using a stationary train car as a giant chest. That might be excessively huge, though.

You can absolutely do this but generally it's for a bunch of different materials you want to store and be able to get to by a lot of different factories. It's used for its large area you can pull from, rather than it's capacity which is inferior for it's size.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Bus anything that produces less materials than it outputs and is an intermediary product. This includes gears and green circuits, but not copper cable. You also might want to leave a space between the different bus belts, it helps with splitters. You're also going to want two belts for iron plates. When you want to see factory pics, hit the ? by my name.

hit my ? for a tileable electric furnace design.

you always want efficiency in your furnaces+drills, half production, half speed in your green circuit and plastic bar factories, speed in your dry oil wells, and production in your full wells and alien artifact factories.

start dumping a single module into drills and then furnaces before you do anything else - the power savings is well worth it.

I've got a smaller setup here

just for belts, though. I added in the other types after I took the SS; there's room north of the blue belts for them. There's a missing inserter between the yellow belt and the red belt factory, and that chest holding yellow belts is extraneous, used for dumping the old belts I replaced back into the flow.

There was talk on previous pages of a Goon server, did that go anywhere? If not I'll set one up this weekend (probably with a few mods) with a "scheduled" start time so we can all get in early to build. It's significantly less fun to come into a perfectly operational, logistics-enabled game where it takes zero effort to do anything.

I know the game supports teams in the underlying code as well, would anyone want a faction-based game or just have a full co-op thing going?
the game's not really "long" enough for that sort of thing, unfortunately. Two or three people can launch a rocket within about 4-6 hours if they've played the game before.

MP is a ton of fun, if you haven't done it grab a buddy for sure! Just realize it's a one-off thing you do with friends not really built for a persistent server.
