Welcome to the All New Amazing Spectacular Spider-Man Thread of 20992014.

Previously on Spider-Man.

Short Version: Doc Ock swapped bodies with Peter Parker because :science: and Peter dies. Things got better and now Peter is back.

Longer Version:

  • Doc Ock is dying from being punched in the head a lot. He swaps body with Spider-Man/Peter Parker so he can live on. Peter dies in Ock's old body.
  • Doc Ock takes up the mantle of The Superior Spider-Man with the power of being greatly inconsistent depending on the writer. He punches bad dudes, creates his own mini army, tries to recreate The Sinister Six, kills people, saves the innocent, shouts at Aunt May, creates a corporation for Peter Parker to be in charge in, be's a chump.
  • While this is happening Peter Parker returns as a spooky ghost to haunt Doc Ock.
  • Doc Ock finds out that Ghost Peter is just a manifestation of remaining Parker memories in his head so deletes them.
  • Ock is pretty happy being Peter Parker free until he can't save the day. He desperately tries to get Peter Parker's memories back but it doesn't work right.
  • Unbeknownst to Ock in trying to access Peter Parker's memories he also brought back Ghost Peter, because there were deeper memories? Look shut up. I explained this to a baby and they understood. Are you a baby? Huh.
  • ~Carlie~ Peter Parker's ex girlfriend spends a lot of time putting filler in the book until eventually being kidnapped by a NEW Green Goblin.
  • Actually scratch that. The Green Goblin is just Norman Osborn, who got some work done, and he proceeds to basically steamroll Ock, turn ~Carlie~ into a Goblin monster, destroy everything Ock has built and steals his girlfriend.
  • With his girlfriend on the verge of dying Ock freely gives Ghost Peter back his body saying Peter is THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN.
  • Peter beats Norman by punching him in the face, hard.
  • Norman runs away, Peter does not think to follow him.
  • Peter explains to Carlie and Mary Jane that he was bodyswapped that's why he was acting strange. They don't really give a poo poo and tell Peter he's too much drama and they are leaving the book/city. Pete doesn't really care.
  • Pete is happy to be alive but has to deal with the fact that Ock didn't break up with their girlfriend before giving him back his body.
  • Also somewhere along that timeline Miguel O Hara ends up being stuck in the present day.

Now with all that out of the way here's to the "current" books.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
The adventures of Peter Parker, everybody's favorite man child. He punches bad guys, has constant relationship drama and spins a web any size. How will he contend with a girlfriend he doesn't remember having? Or someone else with spider powers?

Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Humberto Ramos/Various

Spider-Man 2099
Meet Spider-Man 2099. He's from the year 2099 and stuck in our time! He talks in terrible 80's/90's type slang but he's from the future. Find out how many times the word paradox can be used in this book!

Writer: Peter David
Artist: Will Sliney

The Superior Foes of Spider-Man

The mis-adventures of Boomerang,Shocker and some other chumps. Basically just read through the funny panel thread and you'll see. It's probably the best thing Nick Spencer has done. And that's probably due to the fact that Steve Lieber is on art. Probably ending soon! Probably.

Writer: Nick Spencer*
Artist: Steve Lieber*

*(Or whomever Marvel can get to quickly churn out an issue)

SPIDERVERSE (aka lol if you thought Slott was leaving the book)

You know how Spider-Island was a whole messy event to try and realign the mythical Spider-totem stuff from JMS' run with current Spider-Man? Well this is more of that. Morlun, the bad guy everybody wishes would be forgotten, has returned and is killing of Spider-Men from different universes so they all have to team up like the finale of the 90's cartoon and save the day. Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Kaine, Ben Reilly, Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson, Eddie Brock, any Spider-Man that somehow survived a What If?, Manga Spider-Man, Live Action Spider-Man, the Spider-Man from that sentai show in the 70's and some new ones all make an appearance. Amalgam Spider-Boy will not.

Expect a million different tie-ins, new series and mini series involving anybody with a spider themed name.

Tell Me What Books To Read
Do you want to know more about Spider-Man? Just seen the new film and want some good books? Amazing Spider-Man 1-100 by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, John Romita Sr and Gil Kane is effectively the definitive run of the character and the best it has ever been. Amazing Spider-Man #568 is a good jumping on point if you'd like to read some good, modern comics.

Kinda wanna see a What If? where Aracely comes with Kaine to meet Peter and ends up convincing Ock to give the body back, then Amazing Scarlet Spider Family Adventures :allears:

If you had a Comixology account, you got a $5.00 credit for the fuckery that's going on right now. Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1 is still $3.00 on Comixology right now, but even with a free $5 credit it's still not worth the price of admission (Which is free). You could use that $5 on Spider-Man: Blue, or Spider-Man: Masterworks or Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 1! Or even better Marvel collections that are $3 right now!

Everything about Superior Spider-Man sounds really cool to an outsider. I thought it was really cool too, but I read it and wow Dan Slott just become an editor for DC or something, you are bad at every aspect of a comic book that isn't an idea. Slott writes comics to make action figures, he would have fit in really well in the 90's writing Urban Arctic Assault Spider-Man

Shed, and a lot of stuff from The Gauntlet are really good. The Rhino story is really great, and Grim Hunt following wasn't so bad either.

I dunno, it seems like Slott retconned everything about Spider-Man up until BND himself again with the "Only xx memories!" idea. None of Big Time or Superior seems like it's going to stick at all other than Carlie Cooper walking around and being rude and Slott's horribly inconsistent Mary Jane writing.

It was so bad and cliche.

Grim Hunt was a confusing mess that existed to bring back Kraven and little else.

I like Bagley; I believe he pencilled Thunderbolts for a while and I liked that a lot.

I associate him so much with the Ultimate Spidey that it was kinda weird to learn he'd been doing art for the main Spider-Man titles in the 1990s, worked on the early Clone Saga and drew the issue with the death of (the actress pretending to be :v:) Aunt May.

Is it fair to call him a definitive Spider artist, along with Ditko, Romita and Romita, Jr.?

Morrison has said multiple times that he has nothing to say about the character so has never any interest in doing anything with them. And this was when he was still working with Marvel.

I can't stand Bagley, mostly because every character looks unfinished despite the speed he churns things, but he would probably go in the top 10 list of recognizable Spider-Man artists. Though I wouldn't put him above Ditko, the Romita's or Gil Kane.

Maybe I thought I was being too harsh on Superior Spider-Man. I was only reading bits and pieces when I heard something spectacularly stupid happening, and just had to read it for myself.

I bought the first trade since it was only three bucks on Comixology.

Nitpicks:
  • Anna's cute, but she's drawn like a child, rather than a little person.
  • Since when has Peter Parker ever been known for extraordinary good looks? Never, that I recall. The fact that Otto just walks around with an earpiece and girls all flock to him like Brad Pitt is so laughable.
  • Apparently treating Mary-Jane like garbage and ignoring her turns her on. What a good impression
  • Does Carlie Cooper ever not act condescending?
  • Why does SpOck use an iPhone App when he already has the technology in his goggles? Why doesn't he just do exactly what Iron Man does.
  • Why is Charles Barkley a super scientist?
  • Using children as villain henchman in exchange for arcade tokens is. Wow, that's so dumb. They don't even have arcades, what kid wants to go to an arcade in 2014?
  • The children were drawn to look like they had dwarfism while Anna Marie was drawn to look like a child.

Spectacularly stupid:
Massacre. Everything about Massacre. Casually slipping in murder sprees inside of a fast food restaurant is not cool at all, and then the ridiculousness of having him go to a competitor and "brand" himself with a competitor's logo for blood money is just the dumbest loving thing I think I've ever read a super villain do. It wasn't clever and the only impact it left on me was tasteless attempts at shock and awe. I can't get over how stupid this entire villain/concept is, even if the end-game for Slott was create a villain so "despicable" that Otto would want to kill him to make a point, this was just so loving stupid and a very poor attempt at moving the story forward. It looked like Massacre was pulled right out of a Batman comic during his grittiest, most grimdark era and had the concept with Azreal or Hush as Batman deciding to pull the trigger and kill Joker.

What I took from Volume 1:
Slott is trying to write Superior Batman? Slott should not have ever been allowed to write a character called "Massacre" and whatever he does. If not for that, everything else would just be minor nitpicks. I would have bought Vol 2 if it were on sale; there are ideas and concepts I'd like to continue with. Anna Marie wasn't nearly as bad as the clips and forums made her look (It's just that the art style does not do her any favors).

I still think everything about the brain-swap is stupid. Ghost Peter was stupid. Other things had decent ideas and poor execution. Still think Slott would be a better editor than a writer and just throwing ideas to other, much better writers. "Massacre" turned me off to wanting to read anymore Superior Spider-Man, even if he never shows up again.

It depends on the writer and the girl but Slott certainly isn't the first to do it and he doesn't even do it all that much. Lee/Ditko/Romita have Betty, Liz, MJ, and Gwen all fighting over him at one time or another. Lee's successor, Conway, introduced Glory Grant who also made several passes at Peter.

I really overall agree with everything else you said. Superior has some decent issues but they aren't happening until you get through at least the first half dozen. And even the decent issues are mixed with some horrible scenes when they involve the Avengers or pre-Spock supporting cast being struck with a Dumb Stick due to the story.

The MJ stuff was excessively creepy. Even for Slott. The only "good" thing is they at least got it out of the way by issue #2.

ASM1 was mostly garbage. Slott really goes for the most juvenile humor possible. He can't even write MJ decently for all of the two panels she appears in. The end-of-book cliffhanger has some promise but I'm not holding my breath.

The Electro backup story for the blatant movie cash in was decent enough.

Black Cat backup was okay but I'm really not buying her as master planner villain.

Peter David's 2099 story was good and I'll at least check out that story.

Yost's Kaine backup, of sorts, was really touching. Good summary of Scarlet Spider for those who haven't read it.

As someone who hasn't followed Superior at all beyond the first few issues, I gave Amazing a shot and thought it was pretty awful. Just a lot of fluff and dumb jokes with Ramos in top form at drawing the shittiest-looking characters.

I did like the Black Cat mini, though. The art was really good, and while it's not a character I ever had any fondness for, that was a pretty good setup.

I'm just not feeling ASM. What made Superior so good was Doc Ock starting out by doing things his way, and basically doing villainous things to benefit the city in a heroic way. He was different from the previous Spiderman, and a breath of fresh air. Now we're back to business as usual with the most dry wit ever seen. The entire comic felt like the definition of "the more things change, the more they stay the same". I haven't been involved with current Spiderman for too long, and I know returning to status quo is par for the course, but Spockerman was a huge loss for me.

And I love that they have a side comic that explains how Spiderman's powers work, when

-There's a very very very SMALL group of people who are probably going to start on Spiderman at this point
-Even if they never picked up a Spiderman comic, I think a vast majority knows how his powers work by now

And the extra kick to the gut being the larger price tag, because they have to throw in their lovely new Inhumans comic in an already crowded book.
