Seeing that Badr Hari was a commentator on that one reminds me, I was watching the two Overeem/Hari matches the other day and it’s pretty bonkers how different the heavyweight fights are versus the vast majority of the fights you get in K-1 these days, the lighter weight fights. The high level K-1 fights are still great and I love watching them but just lol at these heavyweight fights. So loving bonkers.

I've listened to Hari commentate two or three fights now and so far he has not called for the death of his enemies or made overt threats against witnesses in ongoing murder cases. I guess it's just a matter of time, but I'm still pleasantly surprised!

Alas (fortunately?), I have no insight in neither his nor Ronaldo's romantic affairs. Must be hard, keeping up a relationship when one party is constantly traveling all over the globe and the other part constantly is in prison.

Put this in the MMA thread, but might as well archive it here too in case there are people that don't read that one:

Last Sunday was the first big kickboxing show of the year, the K-1 World GP 2022 Japan.

K-1 did posted all 25 (!) fights from the show on their Youtube channel this morning.
https://www.youtube.com/c/k1wgp_pr/videos

I'm on the Beyond Kickboxing Discord and they have a feed for must-watch fights, and these are the four they marked as must-watch. I watched these ones and included a write-up to help with context:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg1AtWdrEfU - Kumura Masashi vs. Kaneko Akihiro - Final match of the Super Bantamweight tournament (1-night 8-man). Kumura is former Krush Super Bantam champion, Kaneko former Krush Bantam champion. Each man's third fight of the night. Very good fight where I can't believe they're banging this hard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM0yofVHfAE - Gunji Taito vs. Segawa Takeru. Special Exhibition Match of only 2 rounds, 2 minutes each, with shin pads. Apparently an exhibition because Takeru will finally be fighting Nasukawa Tenshin in June and he doesn't want to risk injury. He's previously a Super Bantam, Feather, Super Feather champion, the only three-class champion in K-1 history. They've been circling each other since 2015 but it was hard to make the match because Tenshin's the star of RISE and Takeru is the star of K-1. Round 2 is great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdij8LBUJm4 - Nishimoto Narufumi vs. Ashizawa Ryusei. Two mid-card dudes, super featherweight. Nishimoto's record has 100% KO finishes but he's only 12-7-2 overall. Round 2 is a round of the year, don't miss this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=905SJrXaRP4 - Yoza Yuki vs. Asahisa Taio. Yoza is a karate champion with only 13 kickboxing fights. Asahisa is from a karate family and is the K-1 lightweight champion, but this isn't a title match. So this is a KARATE BATTLE. Good kicking in this fight, like it's legitimately almost all kicks. Pace felt a little slow to me but it's definitely a fascinating style of fight you don't see much.

Welcome to 2023! Tape Delay Kickboxing continues into the new year with my pledge that I shall attempt to keep this series going and expand the promotions covered to include K-1/Krush, RISE, SHOOT BOXING, Enfusion, and Bigbang. If I find any other promotions on tape that have decent fights, I might cover those too!

This series shall, where possible, allow you to watch the shows in order as if you were watching live, without spoilers.

Beyond Kickboxing event calendar: https://beyondkick.com/schedule

Bigbang 44 - 2023-01-22
Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

“King of Entertainer” Yasuhiro Kido was runner-up in the 2017 K-1 Super Welterweight tournament and the 2008 K-1 WORLD MAX Japan champion, and currently fights at 154 lbs. Here he is doing a 2-minute 2-round exhibition against former Bigbang Heavyweight champion Kosuke Sanekata, who is on a four-fight losing streak and weighed in at 220 lbs for his fight in September.

The top of the card features two title fights. First, for the vacant Bantam title, Shuto Hagiwara, coming off a KO win at Super Bigbang in November, but with an 11-18-4 record overall, takes on 21-year-old Takeru Itabashi. Itabashi is making his Bigbang debut after having all of his previous fights in Krush and having lost a decision in his last fight in September.

The main event is 21-year-old Super Bantam champion Ikko Ota attempting the first defense of his title after winning it over Momotaro Kiyama at Bigbang 43 in September. His challenger is 20-year-old Eruto, who left K-1 after two straight losses to win a decision over Ranmaru at Super Bigbang in November and earn this title shot.

Daiki Katayama may be a 47-year-old former Hanshin Tigers baseball player that played in the farm system and never made it to the big leagues. His opponent, HIRO, looks 50 lbs lighter and also over 50 years old.

Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.

Bigbang Basics: All pro fights on this show are under “Bigbang Rules,” which is K-1 rules: no elbows. There is also a ruleset called, for some reason, “Bigbang Kick Rules,” that allows elbows. The named weight classes match boxing classes, but many of the bouts are contracted at limits outside of those classes.

Here's my Tape Delay write-up in advance for this week's GLORY show because you can watch it free on Youtube. No UFC this week so this is a perfectly fine thing to do with your Saturday night.

GLORY RIVALS 5: War of Nations - 2023-01-28 (8 PM ET Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jg_CLnoxv8)
Zamna Tulum, Tulum, QR, Mexico

GLORY kicks off their 2023 with the fifth installment in their GLORY Rivals series, where Glory-contracted fighters travel to the home grounds of other organizations to take on their best. War of Nations has held one event, with Muay Thai fights in a cage with the fighters wearing the 4 oz. MMA gloves, which you would be familiar with as the style of ONE Championship’s Muay Thai division. The co-promotion with GLORY is their second event, and will take place in a ring with kickboxing gloves and rules.

Several of the challengers to the GLORY fighters on this show have come to this event from the WGP Kickboxing organization, which was the original home of UFC champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira.

The main event sees GLORY #3 Featherweight Abraham “Ham” Vidales given a chance to headline a show in his home country. In October he lost a decision to P4P #3 Petchpanomrung. He will have a 6-inch height advantage over opponent Tomás “El Chacal” Aguirre from Argentina. Aguirre won the WGP Super Lightweight (142 lb) title in October over Renzo Martínez.

GLORY Basics: Kickboxing rules: punches, kicks, and knees allowed. No elbows, no throws. Clinch must include an immediate strike and, if active, fighters are allowed to work in the clinch for up to 5 seconds before the referee will separate them. Regular fights are 3 rounds of 3 minutes, title fights are 5 rounds of 3 minutes.

Tessa De Kom (14-1-1, 0 KO) vs. Giuliana Cosnard (47-2-1, 10 KO) (115)
#8 Bruno Gazani (67-7-1, 33 KO) vs. Nick Chasteen (12-6, 4 KO) (154)
#5 Denis Wosik (37-8-1, 9 KO) vs. Marcos Rios (69-3-7, 41 KO) (143)
Jonas Julio (21-3, 8 KO) vs. Javier Aparicio (36-2-2, 20 KO) (170)
#9 Ivan Galaz (58-10-1, 15 KO) vs. Renan Altamiro (61-11, 46 KO) (187)
#3 Abraham Vidales (15-2, 12 KO) vs. Tomás Aguirre (27-3, 22 KO) (143)

Also on theme for the "crime" gimmick of the thread title

https://beyondkick.com/news/kickboxer-and-model-panchan-rina-opens-up-on-her-arrest-after-being-released-from-jail/

quote:

Undefeated KNOCK OUT Black champion Rina Okamoto, better known by her ring name Panchan Rina, explained the circumstances of her arrest through a video that she released on her YouTube channel.

According to Okamoto, she herself was scammed out of 15,000,000 yen ($115,491) by an acquaintance, having given him 3,000,000 yen on five different occasions. In ordered to recover her losses, Okamoto began selling various articles of merchandise online, some of which were forgeries. The KNOCK OUT ace was unable to make money through fighting during at time, as she had suffered an ACL injury in training this past April.

"This incident is totally the fault of my weak will. In March of this year, an acquaintance recommend an investment to me. Because it was my first time investing I had no knowledge or understanding of how things worked, but even so I invested over 3 million yen. I should've quit when I realized it was a scam, but I couldn't fight off the desire to make up the loss and, by June, the loss exceeded 15,000,000 yen."

Krush.145 - 2023-01-21
Korakuen Hall, Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

The first Krush event of 2023 features the first round of the Super Light tournament for the vacant title, to crown the 9th champion. Previous champion Daizo Sasaki relinquished the belt to focus on winning the K-1 title currently held by Tetsuya Yamato. Today’s four winners will do the semi-finals and finals at Krush.148 on April 28.

In the main event, Krush Light champion Fumiya “Bad Guy” Osawa is making the first defense of his title since he won it via decision over Shuji Kawarada in April. Osawa previously defeated today’s challenger “Stardust Lefty” Yuzuki Satomi by decision in June 2019 in a close fight that all 3 judges scored 30-29. Osawa also defeated Dansiam Ayothaya Fight Gym at the K-1 show in August. Satomi won two fights on big K-1 shows in 2022, over Ryuka and Yuma Saikyo.

K-1 Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a one-night tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. Official rules state that the judges must pick a winner at the end of the extra round, including looking back on the earlier rounds of the fight if necessary. Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate, and fighters are not allowed to pull the neck of the opponent down to deliver a strike.

Fights highlighted in bold were ones that I found particularly entertaining.

Preliminary Fights

Yuki Sakamoto (2-0, 2 KO) vs. Kano (2-0, 2 KO) (143) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpKebikvLsU
