It was more like a Simpsons-style quick gag of a scientist displaying a robot and talking about how it can do the most gentle of tasks, only for said robot to go haywire and act brutal. There have definitely been lots of variations on this joke in lots of different things. The Simpsons alone has probably used it multiple times.
