Inspired by this thread, or it's previous incarnation I decided to watch the documentary series Paradise Lost about the murder of three little boys at Robin Hood Hills and the trial, imprisonment and eventual freeing of the West Memphis Three. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Lost:_The_Child_Murders_at_Robin_Hood_Hills There's lots and lots of things about the murders, the suspects, the trials, the families, the towns, and the supporters that are scary or at least a little unnerving. What really is getting to me is this: Either those three guys were totally sent to prison for life (and in one case death row) in a horrifying parody of how a justice system is supposed to work. Or, one or more of them totally killed those little kids and then they got set free because of a lot of hard work from misguided musicians, filmmakers, activists and support from a lot of people who stuck out in their little small towns and wear black and act spooky. Either way the murderer (or murderers) is walking around free, the three kids didn't spontaneously get stabbed and tied up: someone viciously killed them and it seems like no one will ever know who now. As far as I know no one is seriously looking for the real killers, there's fingers pointing all over the drat place but no real investigation.

Jack Gladney posted:As far as I can remember, the only evidence used to charge the West Memphis Three was circumstantial. The killer got away, but there was never really a chance any of them did it. Am I forgetting anything? I don't know that the first two documentaries cover everything that was ultimately revealed. Oh I hope I didn't give the impression that I thought there is much more than an infinitesimal chance that any of the accused had anything to do with the murder. I just don't like speaking in absolutes. So that's it then huh? Three dead kids and no investigation because as far as the authorities are concerned they arrested and successfully prosecuted the "guilty" parties? What a loving disaster on every level. And jesus, it's been 20 years since the whole terrible saga started.

Caustic posted:I live in the Bay Area and knew a longtime close friend of the family who jumped. She was an exceedingly nice, thoughtful person and successful psychologist. One day she left her 18-month-old toddler alone in her crib, drove 15 miles or so to the bridge, and jumped. Her husband came home shortly thereafter and found the baby OK. No suicide note was left. Sleater-Kinney has a song about just that sort of situation (not precisely her of course). I first heard the song roughly around the same time as watching The Bridge which gave it an extra emotional kick for me. quote:My falling shape will draw a line Content, John B Calhouns mouse utopia experiment: He created an environment for lab mice that had plenty of food, water and everything a mouse could need...except for infinite space. Initially they bred like crazy and had happy mousy little lives. Then they hit the space limits. quote:Initially the population grew rapidly, doubling every 55 days. The population reached 620 by day 315, after which the population growth dropped markedly. The last surviving birth was on day 600. This period between day 315 and day 600 saw a breakdown in social structure and in normal social behavior. Among the aberrations in behavior were the following: expulsion of young before weaning was complete, wounding of young, inability of dominant males to maintain the defense of their territory and females, aggressive behavior of females, passivity of non-dominant males with increased attacks on each other which were not defended against. After day 600, the social breakdown continued and the population declined toward extinction. During this period females ceased to reproduce. Their male counterparts withdrew completely, never engaging in courtship or fighting. They ate, drank, slept, and groomed themselves – all solitary pursuits. Sleek, healthy coats and an absence of scars characterized these males. They were dubbed “the beautiful ones”. and a video too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z760XNy4VM

Well that just coincidentally lines right up with the podcast i just listened to today. Jane Toppan was born in Massachusetts in 1857. She attended the Cambridge Nursing School, and established a successful private nursing career in Boston. Said to be cheerful, funny and excellent with her patients, nothing about “Jolly Jane” suggested she could be “the most notorious woman poisoner of modern times.” Jane Toppan aka (Jolly Jane) (1857–1938), born Honora Kelley, was an American serial killer. She confessed to 31 murders in 1901. She is quoted as saying that her ambition was "to have killed more people — helpless people — than any other man or woman who ever lived...". She was a nurse. A popular and well-liked nurse. A nurse that was sought out as a care-giver, and she poisoned people with morphine and atropine. Possibly a whole lot of people "In 1901, Toppan moved in with the elderly Alden Davis and his family in Cataumet to take care of him after the death of his wife (whom Toppan herself had murdered). Within weeks, she killed Davis and two of his daughters. She then moved back to her hometown and began courting her late foster sister's husband, killing his sister and poisoning him so she could prove herself by nursing him back to health. She even poisoned herself to evoke his sympathy. The ruse did not work, however, and he cast her out of his house."

In case you don't remember he's the neurosurgeon who botched almost every one of the 30+ surgeries he performed, in two cases straight up causing the death of his patient, and stayed bouncing around Texas hospitals doing hella drugs and crippling people for years until he was finally caught. Anyway, I recently listened to a podcast about him and how/why exactly he was allowed to do what he did and I hope it counts for this thread. It was super upsetting for me to listen to, especially since I was recovering from a pretty routine surgery myself when it was recommended to me. I'm barely into the first episode and I feel like I want to die. Thanks! I look forward to listening to it in 5 minute chunks, or whatever the audio equivalent of watching a horror movie thru partially covered eyes is. jfc
