Pretty sure they're used a lot in Chinese medicine as well. There was an X-Files episode, I believe in the third season, that had a cordyceps fungus bursting out of people. Fungal infections in general are pretty freaky deaky. Imagine it being the early 80s, brushing your teeth one morning and seeing  http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidiasis on your loving tongue, and that was your way of finding out you had that AIDS you'd been hearing about (or whatever myriad names they were using for it in the early days of its observation). Bonus points if you weren't a homosexual but now had a supposedly gay man's disease.
