At the risk of derailing the thread into an inevitable serial killer tangent, Ivan Milat (inspiration for the killer in Wolf Creek) is a super creepy slice of Australian modern history. I was old enough to understand exactly what the deal was with this guy and live pretty close to where all the bodies were found. Once in prison, Ivan decided to go on a hunger strike to get a PlayStation, but was unsuccessful.

I'm about a third of the way through this thread and it's been a great read so far. I remembered an article I read a while back about a murder in a small town not far from where I live in NSW Australia. It's not a remote place but it is definitely an Australian country town with two main employers: a mine and an abattoir (which might have shut down since). The story itself focuses on the reporter's experience trying to find out what happened and dealing with the locals who are in turn terrified of talking about it or overly aggressive about him inquiring.

A Town Called Malice

That newspaper can be a bit of a pain in the arse about its firewall so if you can't view the page let me know and I'll post the full text - it's long but a great read.
There was a breakthrough last year

The author of the article himself is a bit of a character too - John Safran and refers to himself as the Jew Detective. Kind of like Australia's answer to Louis Theroux.

Just read this one about an Eritrean man who was the victim of mistaken identity and spent 3 years in an Italian jail on charges of human trafficking.

Meanwhile the actual perp was seen living it up in nightclubs which the prosecution willfully ignored.
