A book about the only known person to have been born in a North Korean concentration camp that managed to escape.

His life in the camp, his escape, and his transition to a normal society is pretty insane.

Since he was born and raised in the camp, he believed the rest of the world was the same, so he had no desire to escape.
It was only when a man who lived on the outside came into the camp, and told him stories of the outside world that made him want to escape.

I just finished Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick so I am totally buying this. North Korea is simultaneously horrifying and really fascinating.

Finally I have money to buy cool poo poo!

I'd order more if I knew where to find high resolution photos. The first one was 86mpix and the 2nd one 174mpix :v:

The Library of Congress Photo Archive is just the thing for you! https://loc.gov/pictures They have a bajillion photos, and a lot of them are really hi-res. I got an historical panorama of my city to hang on my wall and it looks great. Anything you want on your wall, from russian gypsies to alaska trappers are available there.

A friend gave me this excellent year old cat because he wanted a better life for her than his nasty basement bachelor apartment.

So naturally, I bought a lot of cat stuff! Taste of the Wild food, Swheat litter, etc. etc. And shots + spay next wednesday.

Also just moved, so I have been buying so many house things that are not fun at all. Seven garbage bins. SEVEN. 1 big, six little.

Glorious kitty is the only worthwhile photo for this post.

Based on this thread, I bought one of those Brentwood memory foam mattresses:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J0I8RQ2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00

Best sleep ever. My back pain is receding quickly into the distance. It's firm, but you sink into it and the wool cover adds a lovely fluffiness. It was also fun to unroll and watch it poof up.

Holy crap, it's already $100 more than what I paid last week! WTF.

To do a standard cleaning with some extras we picked it would be about $160 each time.

It's so, so, so worth it.

What were the dirty bits of your place that really got on your nerves? Was there a watershed moment where you said "gently caress it, I will pay someone to clean this"? Asking for... a friend.

I bought these comics.

Edit: for some reason the cover pics aren't showing. They're Rat Queens Vol 3 and Ody-C Vol 1.

Re: mattress chat, I bought a Brentwood 11 inch memory foam from Amazon two years ago and it is the most comfortable thing ever. I put it on a zinus bed frame with slats, no boxspring. Even more comfortable after I added a padded mattress cover recently. My only gripe is that the zipper holding the washable bamboo fiber cover on isn't too sturdy, and popped open all down the line when I was wrestling it back on after a wash.

All Japanese rice cookers have lines marked because in Japan people wash the rice first which makes it difficult to measure the total water just using a measuring cup.

Personally I don't usually bother washing California grown Japanese style rice but I do wash long grain rice that might have been in the south (to hopefully reduce possible arsenic).

I don't think the washing is for cleanliness, it removes any dust leftover from the husk and makes the rice sticky, so it clumps nicely for chopstick eating.

I have a Zo neuro fuzzy rice cooker and a mini Zo 1-pound bread machine and I love them both. Kitchen technology for the win.
