If anyone is in San Francisco, they should go to the Exploratorium. They have replicated this with 4 embryos you can see in a case. They're all in various stages of development (rotating cast) and there's a magnifying glass.

So black holes with accretion disks are already cool – no matter the orientation, the disk never obscures your view of the shadow of the event horizon. In fact, you always see the entire shadow, because gravity bends light from just outside the back side and sends it our way. Similar bending occurs on the light coming from the back of the accretion disk, so we see a really cool 360 view of black holes!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyH3XhpLTo

Well Nasa just worked out what it would look like if all that gravitational lensing occurred for binary supermassive black holes

Blowing a 5,000 amp fuse in your backyard!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mGhhdPgXG8&t=775s

Doesn't actually require 5,001 amps. It requires 200,000 amps at 3,000 volts. It also marks the return of channel PhotonicInduction, who did this type of thing several years ago, and whom I thought had stopped making videos because he melted his skin off or something.

See equations in the post above you. Like most things in relativity, Newton's equations like p=mv are accurate enough until you get a significant fraction of the speed of light. At that point, turns out momentum is caused both by mass but also there's a term which doesn't include mass which can grow with your energy (which grows with speed)

Phanatic posted:

Where p is momentum and m0 is rest mass. So for a photon, rest mass is equal to zero and that second term goes away, and you're left with E=pc, or p = Ec, which also equals Planck's constant divided by the wavelength.

So p=Ec which means all you need for momentum is energy. For most things the majority of your energy is in mass, but for photons all the energy is from its frequency.

This might make intuitive sense if you think of momentum as difficulty to stop - high energy gamma radiation won't be stopped by paper which can easily block visible light - the only difference between gamma photons and visible photons is the feequency.
