Really great post, thanks! One of my favorite video game soundtracks, if not my favorite, is Manabu Namiki's Battle Garegga OST. It borrows liberally from Detroit Techno, even basically plagarizing parts of Underground Resistance tracks, but it's amazingly fitting nonetheless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szr0TSXcWok Shmups tend to have really amazing soundtracks, actually. I like the Hellsinker and Touhou ones quite a bit. (Touhou games also have some really good remix albums - the arpeggios lend themselves really well to shreddy power metal.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_nDadpGCEg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okDBNnAjItU Speaking of guitar shredding? Motherfucking Guilty Gear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_S43AP1tgc Shadow of the Colossus should also be mentioned. One of the best orchestral soundtracks ever in my opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2SMcn_p92Q

I might as well mention a few more favorites. The Dustforce OST, oh my god. It's incredibly tranquil and relaxing, and fits perfectly with the game's aesthetic while also making sure the player doesn't end up turning into a beast of pure rage after the thousandth failed SS attempt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXH5G_bqrlc Also, Tetrisphere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRMN7GzZ3ic Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 04:14 on Nov 18, 2014 |

SolidSnakesBandana posted:I was looking for a place to talk this and I finally stumbled upon it! I'm a big fan of JRPG soundtracks. I have no idea why. When I judge a soundtrack, I judge it as a whole. For me to say it's my favorite, I have to like more or less the entire thing. Against all odds, I've managed to form this opinion about more than one game! For me, this is Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7, and Earthbound. I cannot get enough of the music from these games. So imagine my surprise when I learned there was a thriving community producing amazing remixes of this music. Pretty much every Mitsuda JRPG soundtrack is pure gold. Xenogears and his contributions to Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 especially. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOjm9I_-Psw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkE5q5qMcLo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGWVzDhDHMc Motoi Sakuraba's Baten Kaitos soundtracks also have some absolutely incredible material, no matter what you think of his work on the Tales games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XARPxxfAeUc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK5cRPzYa2w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz-jFRuvA2o Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 04:16 on Nov 18, 2014 |

I should also mention the Nier soundtrack. It's highly vocal-based, in an gibberish future language, with some influences from folk music. It is alternately ethereal and unsettling. Manages an emotional impact that almost no game soundtracks do. Also, since I've been playing Digital Devil Saga recently: Best random battle theme ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4PCOAJ80lo Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 05:53 on Nov 20, 2014 |

I'll check out your other links just because anyone who likes the NieR soundtrack has demonstrated good taste right there. The credits track from the Panzer Dragoon Saga OST is probably my favorite from that game (and also uses choirs in a similar way to the NiER OST): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6Vc2yc8JXc

The Drakengard 3 soundtrack is pretty loving weird. There is a brostep battle theme. Vocal effects and electric guitar are a lot more commonplace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz0mgbkwG1o It's still good but not too much like the NieR OST - the final boss theme is the closest it gets, aside from the D3 version of Song of the Ancients. The other Drakengard games have pretty great OSTs too. D1 is the rare game soundtrack that is really abrasive, uncomfortable and dissonant, but still something I'd listen to outside the game. If I recall correctly, Koshiro used lots of generative rhythms for his Streets of Rage soundtracks, which was innovative for its time. Autechre, who are famous for heavily incorporating generative elements into their music, only really started playing around with that stuff in 1994 or so. Koshiro was also part of the dream team that worked on the Kid Icarus: Uprising OST, along with Mitsuda, Sakuraba, Noriyuki Iwadare (Grandia and Lunar series), and Masafumi Takada (No More Heroes, God Hand). That soundtrack isn't the absolute masterpiece you'd expect from such an all-star lineup, but it still has some good stuff like Sakuraba's Dark Pit theme and Koshiro's alien invasion theme.

Soundtracks Shadow Hearts The heavy use of samples gives this soundtrack a very smoky, mysterious, ornate texture. The detail in the soundscapes is lovely, and the overall feeling is somewhat Silent Hill-ish, though not nearly as bleak. Chrono Cross I mean, duh. Touhou 8: Imperishable Night It's very hard to choose a favorite Touhou soundtrack, but this one is a close bet because its mood works so well. It's definitely quite nocturnal-sounding, very elegant and romantic but also dark. The piano melodies are my favorite in the whole series, especially the Voyage 1969 and Maiden's Capriccio leads. Honorable mentions go to: Nier, Digital Devil Saga 1/2, Dustforce, and Donkey Kong 2 Individual Tracks Kingdom Hearts 2 - Sanctuary - Yoko Shimomura + Utada Hikaru I can't listen to this and not want to curl up and cry. Too many emotions. Baten Kaitos - To The End of the Journey of Glittering Stars - Motoi Sakuraba Another sentimental favorite, partly because this is the #1 game of a close friend of mine. Definitely Motoi Sakuraba's best soundtrack, by far. Battle Garegga - Degeneracy - Manabu Namiki Grimy, WW2 shooting backed by an unbelievably good Detroit techno-style soundtrack. Perfect atmosphere.

MegaZeroX posted:Yeah, I'm surprised Touhou hasn't seen more love. I mean, even outside the super popular tracks, the games' music is still incredible. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Touhou originate because the creator wanted to get people to listen to his music? Yuuk's Theme has to be one of my favorites. Yeah it did, actually. ZUN's earlier chiptune stuff is still great. In fact, given the number of amazing tracks he's made, he's up there with Yasunori Mitsuda and Hitoshi Sakimoto as my favorite soundtrack artist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=572oLBUdaXE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygB_MKgqXdg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd0bJ0rrgaU My favorite piece in POFV is actually the pre-fight/interlude track, but Komachi and Shiki also have incredible themes.

Yeah, YU-NO has a gorgeous soundtrack. Done by Ryu Umemoto, who also did a bunch of great shmup soundtracks like Psyvariar and Akai Katana.

You really should, Touhou games are awesome. IMO Ten Desires is the best in the series to start with, it's sorta low-difficulty and has one of ZUN's best soundtracks (not on par with UFO or IN, but still very good). There's also a really cool music gimmick where there's 2 versions of each track, and if you overlap them it sounds a lot fuller and more detailed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE9qjbTJyk8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE9FhKaBBRw I really dislike the last 2 games from a gameplay perspective but they have some great tunes too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ge71HoKN_0s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8xtmqN6jpc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYwul_WIvvs Also Touhou piano covers are really impressive. This one is a favorite of mine. Her Mountain of Faith medley is also amazing. Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 23:23 on Sep 24, 2015 |

Sakimoto can do no wrong, imo. His Vagrant Story and FFT soundtracks are at least as good as FF12, though not quite as nostalgic for me.

It's basically correct. ZUNTATA's soundtracks are loving amazing atmospheric proggy stuff, the Recca OST is really good for an NES sountrack with some neat rave/hardcore techno tendencies, Manabu Namiki is also super versatile. In fact, shmups in general tend to have really good soundtracks.

Most of the Garegga soundtrack is just plagiarizing classic Detroit Techno tracks (see: Underwater Rampart -> Jupiter Jazz) but it's plagiarizing loving awesome music and the vibe is perfectly suited to the game so I don't care.
