The theme to Space Harrier is my all-time favorite piece of VGM. This is the best video of someone performing it live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUqvYKLA0Y0

Love me some Sonic music. I think the first three games were the ones that got me into video game music. That whole Michael Jackson/Sonic 3 thing was pretty crazy. It was amplified to an extreme when this was uncovered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvnsriLZvL0

Ofecks posted:Konami were gods at 8-bit chiptunes. They had some really talented composers and sound designers that brought their games to life. Definitely the best snare drum sound on the NES. One thing I love about NES music are the factions of fans that it creates based on the traits of music. There's Sunsoft fans, Capcom fans, Konami fans, etc. Really shows the diversity and talent of developers for that system.

My favorite console for VGM is the Mega Drive/Genesis. A lot of people don't like it for the robot fart sounds it commonly produced, but here is a selection of tunes I hope people would like. Shinobi 3 - "Whirlwind" - Morihiko Akiyama https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjaW4ZYzVHI Battle Mania Daiginjou - "Twilight Express" - Yasuyuki Hamada https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI9n3qro6tg Ecco: Tides of Time - "Title Theme" - Gábor Foltán https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32S2oJuANxo Contra: Hard Corps - "Hard Corps Blues" - Hiroshi Kobayashi, Akira Souji, Kenji Miyaoka, Michiru Yamane, Akira Yamaoka, Hirofumi Taniguchi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cGSzy_QRpk Langrisser 2 - "Leon" - Noriyuki Iwadare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvkCRCJyrus Thunder Force IV - "Stand up Against Myself" - Toshiharu Yamanishi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObJVuRTIIS4 Master of Monsters - "Black Dignity" - Hitoshi Sakimoto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDmIiHKictU Alisia Dragoon - "1-1" -Fumihito Kasatani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShmM6VKDR4M Streets of Rage 2 - "Spin on the Bridge" - Yuzo Koshiro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr_8TlVx9P8 Alien Soldier - "Runner/AD2025" - Kazuo Hanzawa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sSgMfR4gyo Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf - "BGM 1" - Tokuhiko "Bo" Uwabo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrFknFeaYYc Sword of Vermilion - "Last City" - Hiroshi "Hiro" Kawaguchi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSrsQ1549ag Herzog Zwei - "There is No Time to Lose" - Tomomi Ootani https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEf-jS4qwYM Road Rash - "Sierra Nevada" - Rob "God" Hubbard (The drum solo bit just out of this world) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eV1kudRbt0 Arcus Odyssey - "Opening Theme" - Motoi Sakuraba (Sure, the X68000 version may sound better, but I love the instrumentation used here by Sakuraba, along with the rest of those Wolf Team Genesis games.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1iSECtvHf8 Mick & Mack as the Global Gladiators - "McRock" - Tommy Tallarico https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcKAX7aYlz4 Jewel Master - "The Gate of Delirium" - Motoaki Takenouchi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rNC7YRW60g Ecco the Dolphin - "Ice Zone" - Andras Magyari, Brian Coburn, Spencer Nilsen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UMIIqK_ovg Mega Bomberman - "Slammin' Sea" - Jun Chikuma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ugqPshMtoM Pulseman - "Stereo Protect" - Junichi Masuda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rCyPKnU0ZA

EvilGenius posted:It's tempting to believe one's love of this music is purely nostalgic, but my god those first two tracks are beautiful and I'd never heard them before. That's what I love about VGM. Discovering great game music is just the same as discovering a band or album that was there all along. EvilGenius posted:And holy crap, Rob Hubbard did the music for Road Rash? I had no idea. It's funny because I worship his C64 music, but I always found Road Rash showed up the worst of the Genesis sound chip, with robot farting bass and nails on a chalk board leads. Yeah, Road Rash definitely depends on the person. I just can't hear the screechiness anymore. I must have blocked out it from hurting my ears. EvilGenius posted:both Ecco the Dolphin games had outstanding music. Majestic, haunting, and downright terrifying in places. I adore the Ecco games on the Genesis. The first one is in my top 10 games I've ever played. The soundtrack could be the reason! second-hand smegma posted:Hey, if you like Ecco, you might enjoy Kolibri, a side-scrolling hummingbird shmup from the same studio. It's a rare 32x gem with awesome music. Holy crap, I have never heard this before. Sounds so good! The game looks great too. I'm tweeting Ed Annunziata about it right now. Here's the soundtrack rip: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/kolibri/kolibri.htm EvilGenius posted:I may have a look at this tonight, but there are sound chip emulators and soundtrack files out there. They're all ancient (one's a bloody Winamp plugin, if anyone still uses that). I had one where you could switch the different oscillators on and off and isolate certain tracks. Yep, I have pretty much all the plugins and whatnot for ripped music files. I recommend using foobar2000 with all of these plugins: http://www.foobar2000.org/components/tag/game+music (I summon kode54 to this thread! I know you're here.) Here are the collections you want: Project2612 (Genesis/MD) VGMRips (Genesis/VGM formats in general) SNESMusic (SNES and, weirdly other stuff like Japanese PC rips) Slick/The Shizz/Zophar/2a03/bucky (NES) HVSC (C64) Hoot archive (Lots of Japanese PC, some Adlib-era PC stuff like X-COM) CaithSith/LLin (PS1, GBA) joshw (DS) I'm missing a bunch, but it's a good starting point. EvilGenius posted:I mentioned in an earlier post the limitations of the SID chip in the C64, and how composers worked around its 3 voice limit. Here's a brilliant visualisation of that - an oscilloscope view of what all 3 voices are doing through a Rob Hubbard tune. Very cool stuff. The C64 is the definitive system for creative limitation. Sorry to the Genesis haters in the thread, but here's some more Genesis stuff. I'm inspired to compile a regularly updated list of all the VGM file formats, collections, players, websites, etc. so people know where to go for the . Anyone wanna help? kode54 posted:Check out the hcs64.com forum, therein lies a topic, listing all of the console and system specific subdomains on joshw.info. They all contain loads of emulated and also streamed game music. Most of them are playable with either PSF (P for Portable) and its various child formats and emulator libraries, or with vgmstream. Good stuff! I had no idea that list existed. You also responded to a very specific request of mine a few years ago for the .AMF file format and updated foo_dumb as a result. I thank you for that again!

Soundtracks Crusader: No Remorse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OqddpU2oGA My favorite game also happens to have my favorite music. Excellent electronic/rock/techno stuff. NieR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGmhtFgoAGA Melancholy and deeply personal. Sends you to a different world when listening to it. Probably one of the finest game soundtracks ever composed. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy4pLMyNbHo A great example of a solid soundtrack—not a single weak track. Just classic. Individual Tracks Space Harrier - "Theme" - Hiroshi Kawaguchi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Tam9lv1KQ I feel this is the best video game song ever composed. It does everything that VGM should do right: melody, hook, outside of game listening, never gets old. MegaRace - "NewSan" - Stephane Picq https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Up7JnFatfF8 Brilliant technical mastery of a soundchip. Not to mention the song is just awesome! Metal Gear Solid - "The Best is Yet to Come" - Rika Muranaka https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyE0UabtLn0 Beautiful. This song marked the time for me when VGM transcended hardware limitations.

ZUNTATA's soundtracks are loving amazing atmospheric proggy stuff, the Recca OST is really good for an NES sountrack with some neat rave/hardcore techno tendencies, Manabu Namiki is also super versatile.
