This is one of the best things I've heard in a game Elizabeth, from BioShock Infinite, composed by Garry Schyman

----

Taking it back a few years, the original Tenchu: Stealth Assassins had fantastic music for every stage, which played prominently over any action that was happening on screen. Tenchu 2 was my favorite in the series but they did something really weird, they removed the music in every scenario but cinemas and boss fights, and said tracks were usually only a minute long at the most. Anyways, there is an entire soundtrack for T2. The US version of Tenchu: SA had a few extra levels, both with amazing songs. When I was a teenager my dad asked me to burn him a CD of this music so he could play it in his college classrooms while students worked, so it definitely has appeal outside of games. The Composer for all Tenchu music is/was Noriyuki Asakura. The songs are all hybrids of eastern and western styles, and they all really speak for themselves.

"God of a Heretical Religion " - infiltrate the manji cult
cure the princess
execute the corrupt minister initially North America only
cross the checkpoint initially North America only
training mission

and a few from Tenchu 2

Kengeku (boss fight theme)
Rasetsu (boss fight theme)
Mugen (end credits)

For me, Playstation Era music is where it is at.

Saga Frontier 2, Castlevania, Ridge Racer 4 (and Rage racer), Tobal No 2...all so great.

Hell yeah: Wood Carving Partita and Wandering Ghosts, baby!

A couple examples that I think exemplify this genre: Guile's Theme, The Man With The Machine Gun (FF8), Contra Jungle Theme

Such an awesome song.

But in spite of how great all the soundtracks to all Metal Gear games are, none will ever surpass the original Metal Gear Solid for me.
Rex's Lair - It's more like a final dungeon theme in a JRPG. I love it.
Enclosure - AKA the reason most give a poo poo about Wolf's death.
Escape - "Not yet, Snake! It's not over yet!" How the loving hell did you survive again, Liquid???

I agree with this. I could never figure out exactly what made all the music in MGS1 so drat good.

While we're on the subject, I realised something about the Sonic 3 sound track as i was replaying it a few weeks back -

The tracks that are generally considered to be the MJ ones are Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base. The act 2 music on all of those are straight-up rearrangements of act 1, i.e. there's no new elements at all. My theory is that they paid MJ and his producer for 3 tracks and had the in-house composer rearrange MJ's tracks to save having to pay for 6. Either that, or they dropped him before he completed the proper remixes on those acts. It just strikes me as odd how radically reworked all the other act 2 music is , yet Carnival, Ice Cap and Launch Base seem kind of lazy by comparison.

When I was a kid I always thought this theme sounded super epic.

My favorite console for VGM is the Mega Drive/Genesis. A lot of people don't like it for the robot fart sounds it commonly produced, but here is a selection of tunes I hope people would like.

Herzog Zwei - "There is No Time to Lose" - Tomomi Ootani

Herzog Zwei had all kinds of kickass music.

Not bad for the very first RTS game. And it had loving SPLIT-SCREEN! :aaaaa:

I used to play Skitchin, as well as Road Rash, and I have the music from this first stage embossed on my eardrums.

Notable track titles from the terrible Skitchin soundtrack: "Eat My Junk", "Jerky Curtains", "Let's Plow", "Silken Liver Slipper", "Smells Like Tuna", "Sniff", and the ever charming "Spicy Placenta".

Ecco the Dolphin

Hey, if you like Ecco, you might enjoy Kolibri, a side-scrolling hummingbird shmup from the same studio. It's a rare 32x gem with awesome music.

My favorite track is at this stage

Hard to hear over that drat laser, though. Some dude managed to extract the whole soundtrack off the cart a little while back. Otherwise it's really hard to find in any decent quality. Most of the stuff on youtube sounds like it was recorded from tv speakers.

Kolibri was the last cart I ever purchased before getting a Playstation and going down that road. It was a nice way to go out.

As an epilogue to my Tenchu 1&2 post back there... I had this stuck in my head ALL DAY.

Tenchu 3 - Theme from Ronin Village

Different developers on the game, but Asakura returned to compose the music.
