Welcome to Moonside.

Wecomel to Soonmide.

Moonwel ot cosidme.
Now that the warm glow of draft weekend is behind us, we are back in the cold, bitter winter of the offseason. Teams have crammed all of their draftees and UDFAs onto 90 man rosters for now, but only 53 can make the final cut. This is the thread where we monitor all of these roster transactions and make our best guesses at what our teams will look like come September 4th. I'll start with my team:

San Francisco 49ers

Outgoing Free Agents: S Donte Whitner, CB Tarell Brown, RB Anthony Dixon, WR Mario Manningham, CB Carlos Rogers (released), C Jonathan Goodwin, QB Colt McCoy

Incoming Free Agents: S Antoine Bethea, CB Chris Cook, WR Brandon Lloyd

Acquired by Trade: QB Blaine Gabbert, WR Stevie Johnson, OL Jonathan Martin

Quarterbacks

Obvious Locks:
Colin Kaepernick
Blaine Gabbert

No quarterback controversy here, it's Kap's team. Blaine Gabbert might be Jim Harbaugh's toughest test as a QB guru yet, but I guess he can't be much worse than Colt McCoy so please please stay healthy Kap.

Solid Bets:
Josh Johnson

Johnson's experienced and Harbaugh knows him, so it seems likely that he's going to make the squad.

Longshots:
McLeod Bethel-Thompson
Kory Faulkner

Realistically these guys are probably battling for a practice squad spot, not the main roster.

Running Backs

Obvious Locks:

Frank Gore
Carlos Hyde
Marcus Lattimore

The workhorse back and two new arrivals, Lattimore was obviously drafted last year but spent the whole season on the shelf so this is effectively his rookie season. This is probably Gore's last year with the team and Baalke seemed very high on Hyde in particular after drafting him, so we'll see if he starts taking carries from the old man as the year goes on.

Solid Bets:

Kendall Hunter

Hunter's a contributer on special teams, a backup returner and one of their better receiving threats out of the backfield. The coaches love him, I'd be surprised if he got cut.

On the Bubble:

Lamichael James

The Niners have repeatedly denied interest in trading James, but he's been vocally upset with his playing time and hasn't found much role in the offense due to his considerable skillset overlap with Hunter. He was the team's primary kick and punt returner last season but if somebody else steps up in that regard this preseason he's probably gone.

Longshots:

Jewel Hampton

The Niners coaches have been high on Hampton in the recent past but as far as I know he's never been on the active roster in a regular season game, though he did make the 53 at one time. He's probably the casualty of the Niners' crowded RB room this year, they'll try to get him to the practice squad but I wouldn't be surprised if he got poached off waivers by someone else.

Fullbacks

Obvious Locks:

Bruce Miller

Excellent lead blocker, turned into a pretty good receiving threat out of the backfield last year, and does a lot of the little things that make the read-option elements of the Niners offense work. He's not going anywhere.

Longshots:

Trey Millard

Member of the Shredded ACL Squad, should spend at least part if not all of this year on PUP.

Wide Receivers

Obvious Locks:

Michael Crabtree
Anquan Boldin
Stevie Johnson

With the Johnson trade, the Niners now have 3 receivers with 1000 yard seasons in the last two years. The lack of depth at the position was severely exposed when Crabtree tore his Achilles tendon in camp, with him healthy and Stevie as the #3 this is the best and deepest the Niners have been at receiver in recent memory.

Solid Bets:

Quinton Patton
Bruce Ellington

Patton broke his foot early in the season last year but flashed some potential after returning, Ellington is almost certain to make the squad but I suppose fourth round picks have gotten cut very very rarely before so I won't count him as a complete lock. Ellington is probably the biggest threat to take return duties away from James.

On the Bubble:

Kassim Osgood

Osgood is a loving monster on special teams, which is probably enough for him to be the sixth man on the WR depth chart. But now that we have more than two legitimate receivers it's going to be much more of a debate than before.

Longshots:

Brandon Lloyd
Jon Baldwin
Chuck Jacobs
David Reed
Devon Wylie

Jon Baldwin was toast to begin with, the only reason that trade was made was to get out from that first round pick contract a year sooner. The real loser from the Stevie Johnson trade was Lloyd, who will probably need a stellar training camp to beat out Osgood now. Considering he's 32, been away from football for a year and didn't look all that great on the Patriots with a future Hall of Famer throwing to him... I wouldn't give him good odds. Jacobs and Wylie will be fighting for the practice squad, Reed is roster filler.

Tight Ends

Obvious Locks:

Vernon Davis
Vance McDonald

No controversy here, Davis is one of the biggest receiving threats on the team and McDonald progressed a lot as a blocker last year although he has yet to make much of an impact in the passing game.

On the Bubble:

Garrett Celek

The only player of the rest that has seen snaps in a real game, he gets the nod by default, but I don't get the impression his spot is safe.

Longshots:

Derek Carrier
Asante Cleveland

Again, this is probably a competition for a practice squad spot. The Niners gave Cleveland a pretty big signing bonus for a UDFA, we'll see if that means anything.

Offensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Joe Staley
Anthony Davis
Mike Iupati
Alex Boone
Daniel Kilgore
Marcus Martin

The presumptive starting 5, plus Martin who figures to push Kilgore for the starting job at center.

Solid Bets:

Joe Looney
Jonathan Martin

Looney was the primary backup at guard last year, Martin is a reclamation project from the Dolphins locker room scandal and will presumably back up both tackle spots. Maybe they'll move him inside, who knows.

On the Bubble:

Adam Snyder

The Niners coaches like him for his versatility, but it's hard to see them carrying nine OL or Snyder beating out any of the guys in the earlier categories, so I'm thinking he's gone unless Jon Martin looks like complete poo poo in camp.

Longshots:

Carter Bykowski
Luke Marquardt
Al Netter
Ryan Seymour
Dillon Farrell
Fou Fonoti

All of these guys are probably fighting for one or two practice squad spots. Marquardt should maybe be moved up to the bubble category, as he was part of the PUP All-Stars last year and the coaches could be higher on him than I realize.

Defensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Justin Smith
Ray McDonald
Ian Williams
Glenn Dorsey
Tank Carradine

First two are self-explanatory, Williams was expected to be the starter at NT last year before he got his ankle broke by a dirty Seahawk block, Dorsey did very well last year as a super-sub and is cheap, Carradine is another guy coming off PUP and will probably be the biggest test for if the 'draft injured guys and stash them for a year' strategy is going to work.

Solid Bets:

Tony Jerod-Eddie

TJR also played well in limited snaps last year as a run-stuffer, the Niners used a lot more DL rotation than they had in the recent past and I think he showed enough last year to stay on the team even with Carradine getting healthy.

On the Bubble:

Demarcus Dobbs
Will Tukuafu
Quinton Dial

Dobbs and Tukuafu had been the primary backups at DE for the first couple years of Harbaugh's tenure, but with TJR and now Carradine coming in their positions are looking increasingly tenuous. They're helped a little bit by being backups on offense as well (Dobbs at TE, Tukuafu at FB) but they're not especially good at those positions so I don't know how much value that really adds. Dial was a late round pick last year that was also on PUP for most of the year, they cared enough about him to actually keep him on the 53 once he was healthy but he was always on the inactive list so it's hard to tell if there's any potential there.

Longshots:

Lawrence Okoye
Mike Purcell

Again, practice squad guys. We'll see how much progress Okoye has made in developing football skills by whether or not they bother continuing to stash him there, I guess.

Linebackers

Obvious Locks:

Patrick Willis
NaVorro Bowman (eventually)
Aldon Smith (also eventually)
Ahmad Brooks
Corey Lemonier
Chris Borland
Dan Skuta

The first four are obvious. Bowman will probably miss the first half of the year on PUP and Aldon will probably be suspended for a while even if his charges are pled out/dropped because Protect The Shield, yadda yadda. Lemonier and Skuta were primary backups last year and Skuta was a rock on special teams so he's staying. I'm putting Borland in this category even though I don't know how much playing time he'll see because it's exceptionally rare for third round picks to not make the squad out of camp.

Solid Bets:

Michael Wilhoite

Another special teams staple, Wilhoite also played pretty well as a replacement when Willis was out for a couple games last year, I imagine he'll definitely make the squad out of camp but once Smith and Bowman get back his status becomes a little murkier.

On the Bubble:

Nick Moody
Aaron Lynch

Both late-round picks that will probably have to prove themselves on special teams to earn their spots.

Longshots:

Shayne Skov
Morgan Breslin

Both great college players that went undrafted somewhat unexpectedly, the potential is there but this is going to be a hard LB group to crack. One of them could potentially make the initial 53 but once Aldon and Bowman are back it's hard to see them leapfrogging enough guys to be there long-term. I expect at least one of them to be on the practice squad if they make it through waivers.

Secondary

Obvious Locks:

Tremaine Brock
Chris Culliver
Eric Reid
Antoine Bethea
Jimmie Ward

The starting four, plus Ward who figures to be the primary nickelback as well as back up both safety spots. Culliver probably won't get suspended as this is his first run-in with the law (I'm pretty sure gay-bashing on the radio doesn't count with the league office, but this is Goodell we're talking about). Brock came out of nowhere from being mostly a ST guy after Asomugha's injury and got a new contract out of the deal, yet another late-round Niners CB success story which in retrospect should have not made it surprising they didn't address that need early in the draft.

Solid Bets:

CJ Spillman
Dontae Johnson

Spillman is a longtime ST staple and one of the primary backup safeties, I'd imagine he's safe. Johnson probably makes the team because of his draft position.

On the Bubble:

Eric Wright
Perrish Cox
Craig Dahl
Bubba Ventrone
Darryl Morris

All ST guys of various levels of importance/competence on defense. Morris has practice squad eligibility, none of the other guys do. Please get the gently caress off my team, Perrish Cox.

Longshots:

Keith Reaser
Kenneth Acker
LJ McCray
DJ Campbell

I believe the first two are both destined for the PUP Futures Squad this year, I know Reaser is for sure. I literally know nothing about either McCray or Campbell, they were either 7th rounders or UDFAs I forget which.

Specialists

Obvious Locks:

Phil Dawson
Andy Lee
Kevin McDermott

These guys rule. Phil Dawson is the best, I'm so glad Cleveland let him walk so I don't have to relive 2012 David Akers anymore.

Longshots:

Colton Schmidt

I guess it's possible they'll want to save salary at the specialist positions eventually, but Lee just got a contract extension a couple years ago so I imagine they can't release him without a cap hit for a while. Schmidt is probably auditioning for another team this preseason.

Projected 53-Man Roster

Offense

QB: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Johnson
RB: Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde, Marcus Lattimore, Kendall Hunter
FB: Bruce Miller
WR: Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson, Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington, Kassim Osgood
TE: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek
OL: Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin, Joe Looney, Jonathan Martin, Adam Snyder

Defense

DL: Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Tank Carradine, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Demarcus Dobbs

Nobody move and nobody gets hurt.

Here's my stab at the Colts:

Outgoing Free Agents: C Samson Satele, S Antoine Bethea, CB Cassius Vaughn, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, OL Mike McGlynn

Incoming Free Agents: DE Arthur Jones, WR Hakeem Nicks

Quarterbacks

Andrew Luck
Matt Hasselbeck

Clear-cut #1 and backup situation.

Running Backs

Obvious Locks:

Trent Richardson
Vick Ballard
Ahmad Bradshaw

On the Bubble:

Boom Herron
Chris Rainey

This is essentially a competition for return specialist.

Fullbacks

Stanley Havili
Cameron White

This is Havili’s job to lose. He played well last season and it’s unlikely any of the camp bodies will supplant him.

Wide Receivers

Obvious Locks:

Reggie Wayne
TY Hilton
Hakeem Nicks
Donte Moncrief

A superstar veteran, an emerging star, a high-profile free agent, and a high-ceiling rookie. No chance any of these guys don’t make the roster.

On the Bubble:

Lavon Brazill
Griff Whalen
Da’Rick Rogers

Probably only room on the roster for two of these guys. Right now I’d give the edge to Whalen and Rogers, since they bring different skill sets and Brazill has a history of drug suspensions.

Tight Ends

Obvious Locks:

Dwayne Allen
Coby Fleener

On the Bubble:

Jack Doyle
Weslye Saunders
Erik Swoope

Doyle and Saunders have the inside track. Swoope has never played a down of football in his life and is probably bound for the practice squad, but if he has a good camp I could see them rolling the dice.

Offensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Anthony Castonzo
Donald Thomas
Khaled Holmes
Hugh Thornton
Gosder Cherilus
Jack Mewhort

Basically our starting line plus this year’s second-round pick.

On the Bubble:

Jack Breckner
Xavier Nixon
Joe Reitz
Lance Louis
Jonotthan Harrison

Nixon and Reitz played well last year in backup roles. Breckner is a project who may catch on, and Louis is a capable veteran backup. Harrison is a UDFA signing that may find a place on the roster given our lack of depth at Center.

Defensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Cory Redding
Arthur Jones
Josh Chapman
Ricky Jean-Francois

On the Bubble:

Montori Hughes
Fili Moala
Jeris Pendleton
Tyler Hoover

Linebackers

Obvious Locks:

Robert Mathis
Erik Walden
Bjoern Werner
Jonathan Newsome
Jerrell Freeman
D’Qwell Jackson
Josh McNary

On the Bubble:

Cam Johnson
Daniel Adongo
Andy Studebaker
Andrew Jackson
Henoc Muamba
Kelvin Sheppard

Secondary

Obvious Locks:

Vontae Davis
Greg Toler
Josh Gordy
Darius Butler
LaRon Landry
Delano Howell
Sergio Brown

On the Bubble:

Qua Cox
Dewey McDonald
Corey Lynch
Sheldon Price
Keon Lyn
Loucheiz Purifoy

Specialists

Obvious Locks:

Adam Vinatieri

Projected 53-Man Roster

Offense

QB: Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck
RB: Trent Richardson, Vick Ballard, Ahmad Bradshaw, Boom Herron
FB: Stanley Havili
WR: Reggie Wayne, TY Hilton, Hakeem Nicks, Donte Moncrief, Da’Rick Rogers, Griff Whalen
TE: Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, Jack Doyle, Weslye Saunders
OL: Anthony Castonzo, Donald Thomas, Khaled Holmes, Hugh Thornton, Gosder Cherilus, Jack Mewhort, Jonotthan Harrison, Joe Reitz

Defense

DL: Cory Redding, Josh Chapman, Arthur Jones, Ricky Jean-Francois, Montori Hughes, Jeris Pendleton
OLB: Robert Mathis, Bjoern Werner, Erik Walden, Jonathan Newsome
ILB: Jerrell Freeman, Josh McNary, Andrew Jackson, D’Qwell Jackson
CB: Vontae Davis, Greg Toler, Darius Butler, Josh Gordy, Qua Cox, Loucheiz Purifoy, Keon Lyn

STOP DOING HEROIN
Your defending champion Seattle Seahawks

Quarterback

Obvious locks:

Russell Wilson
Tarvaris Jackson

TJax is the only backup with guaranteed money which makes me think he'll stay the No. 2 guy, but we know how much Pete preaches competition, so this will be one of the more intriguing storylines heading into camp.

Solid bets:

Terrelle Pryor

Pryor's athletic gifts are obvious, but his QB skill leaves a lot to be desired. At best, I see him as a gadget player.

On the bubble:

B.J. Daniels
Keith Price

The team isn't keeping five QBs on the active roster, so this is a battle for the practice squad. Daniels is one of Pete's pet projects, but I can see Price making a run if he keeps up the "efficient-but-not-sexy" form he showed at UW.

Running back

Obvious locks:

Marshawn Lynch
Christine Michael
Robert Turbin

Turbin is perfectly fine, but Pete clearly sees Michael as the future at the position. If he shows better pass protection in preseason, I fully expect him to leapfrog the depth chart and see some significant carries in 2014 as the team starts looking for Lynch's successor.

Fullback

On the bubble:

Derrick Coleman
Spencer Ware
Kiero Small

An old-school running offense needs an old-school blocking FB. Unless they bring back Michael Robinson, these guys are fighting for one roster spot.

Wide Receiver

Obvious locks:

Percy Harvin
Doug Baldwin
Jermaine Kearse
Sidney Rice

Solid bets:

Kevin Norwood
Paul Richardson

On the bubble:

Ricardo Lockette
Chris Matthews
Arceto Clark
Phil Bates
Taylor Price
Bryan Walters

This unit doesn't look inspiring on paper, but they work together well and Wilson likes to spread his targets around. If Harvin and Rice can stay healthy this makes for a potentially imposing attack. Norwood is one of my rookie breakout candidates.

Tight End

Obvious locks:

Zach Miller
Luke Willson

Solid bets:

Anthony McCoy

On the bubble:

Cooper Helfet
Travis Beckum
Chase Dixon

TE isn't really a priority in Seattle's system, but Miller is basically a 6th O-lineman (a great one, at that) and Willson showed promise as a rookie. If McCoy can return to his pre-Achilles-tear form he'd be valuable, but this position is basically on the backburner right now.

Offensive Line

Obvious locks:

Russell Okung
Max Unger
James Carpenter
J.R. Sweezy
Michael Bowie

Solid bets:

Justin Britt
Alvin Bailey
Lemuel Jeanpierre
Jared Smith

On the bubble:

A bunch of guys I don't care about but hopefully they're better than Sweezy

It may seem like nitpicking to find flaws in a 13-3 Super Bowl champion, but the O-line was by far Seattle's biggest weakness in 2013. Other than drafting Britt and hoping some camp bodies stick, it's basically the same unit. Britt will fight Bowie/Bailey for the starting RT job, which will be one of the top training camp stories to follow.

Defensive Line

Obvious locks:

Michael Bennett
Brandon Mebane
Cliff Avril
Tony McDaniel

Solid bets:

Cassius Marsh
Greg Scruggs
Jordan Hill
Benson Mayowa
Jesse Williams
Jackson Jeffcoat

On the bubble:

Dewayne Charrington
Kenneth Boatright
D'Anthony Smith
Michael Brooks
Jimmy Staten

The Legion of Boom gets all the headlines, but Seattle's deep D-Line rotation might be the most important part of this scheme, constantly getting fresh legs in and letting the secondary do its thing. Things should be no different this year after locking up Bennett and looking for more contribution from Williams and Hill, whose rookie years were derailed by injury. Jeffcoat might be a UDFA steal if he fulfills the promise that had people mocking him into the 2nd-3rd round a year ago.

Linebackers

Obvious locks:

K.J. Wright
Bobby Wagner
Bruce Irvin
Malcolm Smith

Solid bets:

Mike Morgan
Korey Toomer
Heath Farwell
Kevin Pierre-Louis

On the bubble:

Brock Coyle
Mike Taylor

The starters are solid guys who know what they're doing, the backups are good special teamers. Not much to say about this group other than thumbs-up, keep doing what you're doing.

Secondary

Obvious locks:

Richard Sherman
Earl Thomas
Kam Chancellor
Byron Maxwell
Jeron Johnson
Jeremy Lane

Solid bets:

Dion Bailey
Tharold Simon
Terrance Parks
Chandler Fenner
Akeem Auguste
Eric Pinkins

These guys don't need much introduction, obviously. Kam's hip surgery is the only immediate concern, but he should be ready by preseason. Again, we should point out how much Pete loves depth--look how quickly Maxwell made Brandon Browner expendable--so expect a few of those lower guys to make an impact. My money is on Bailey, for the record.

Special Teams

Obvious locks:

Steven Hauschka
Jon Ryan
Clint Gresham

Don't fix what ain't broken. These guys are cool. I could probably see Paul Richardson taking the returner spot if they want to protect Harvin, but other than that this is straightforward.

Projected 53-man roster

Offense

QB: Russell Wilson, Tarvaris Jackson, Terrelle Pryor
RB: Marshawn Lynch, Christine Michael, Robert Turbin
FB: Derrick Coleman
WR: Percy Harvin, Doug Baldwin, Sidney Rice, Jermaine Kearse, Kevin Norwood, Paul Richardson
TE: Zach Miller, Luke Willson, Anthony McCoy
OL: Russell Okung, Max Unger, James Carpenter, J.R. Sweezy, Michael Bowie, Justin Britt, Alvin Bailey, Lemuel Jeanpierre

Defense

DL: Michael Bennett, Brandon Mebane, Cliff Avril, Tony McDaniel, Jesse Williams, Jordan Hill, Greg Scruggs, Cassius Marsh, Jackson Jeffcoat, Benson Mayowa
LB: K.J. Wright, Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin, Malcolm Smith, Mike Morgan, Heath Farwell, Kevin Pierre-Louis
CB: Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Jeremy Lane, Tharold Simon
S: Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Jeron Johnson, Dion Bailey, Eric Pinkins

Incoming Free Agents: WR Steve Smith Sr., G Will Rackley, S Darian Stewart

Acquired by Trade: C Jeremy Zuttah

Quarterbacks

Obvious Locks:

Joe Flacco

Solid Bets:

Tyrod Taylor
Keith Wenning

This is the last year of Taylor's rookie contract, and presumably Wenning will be groomed this year to replace him. Doesn't matter, we're not winning any games Joe's inactive.

Longshots:

Nick Stephens

Running Backs

Obvious Locks:

Ray Rice
Bernard Pierce
Lorenzo Taliaferro
Kyle Juszczyk (FB)

Longshots:
Justin Forsett
Cierre Wood
Shaun Chapas (FB)

Wide Receivers

Obvious Locks:

Torrey Smith
Steve Smith, Sr.
Marlon Brown

Jacoby Jones (WR/RS)

On the Bubble:

Aaron Mellette
Michael Campanaro
Deonte Thompson (WR/RS)

1-2 of these guys end up on the team.

Longshots:

LaQuan Williams
Gerrard Sheppard
Jace Davis
Jeremy Butler

UDFA camp bodies. LaQuan's made the initial 53 man roster two out of the last three years on scrappiness, heart, and special teams play. Everyone's pulling for him to do it again, but realistically it ain't happening unless all the guys ahead of him struggle mightily on special teams.

Tight Ends

Obvious Locks:

Dennis Pitta
Owen Daniels
Crockett Gilmore

Longshots:

Matt Furstenberg
Nathan Overbay
Phillip Supernaw

Fans were clamoring for local product Furstenberg to come off the practice squad all season last year, I'm sure they'll do it again, but unless this position group sees even more crippling injuries than last year, it ain't gonna happen. Particularly now that he's been cut.

Offensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Eugene Monroe (LT)
Kelechi Osemele {LG)
Jeremy Zuttah (C)
Marshal Yanda (RG)

Solid Bets:

Rick Wagner (RT)
John Urschel (G/C)

Wagner is the presumptive starting RT, and the coaching staff is high on him, but we didn't see any reason for confidence in extremely limited playing time last year. Urschel is a new draft pick and Ravens keep the overwhelming majority of their drafted rookies for at least a year.

On the Bubble:

Will Rackley (G)
Ryan Jensen (C/T)
Gino Gradkowski (C)
AQ Shipley (C/G)
Jah Reid (G/T)
James Hurst (T)

This team has five potential centers on the roster, and none of them are terribly good. Zuttah is league-average and therefore by far the best. Expect one to two of these five to make the team, probably Shipley and Reid as they're the most versatile known commodities. Hurst is a UDFA, but highly rated and potentially the opening day starter at RT. Osemele could also kick over to RT, allowing Shipley, Reid, or Rackley to start at LG. After the top four, the O line is a mess, but late acquisition Will Rackley was Jacksonville's starting left guard his first two years in the league before losing his 2013 season to an ankle injury . Some likelihood that Eric Winston will be signed to compete for the RT spot after June 1st (when he no longer counts against the compensatory pick formula).

Longshots:

Reggie Stephens (C)
David Mims (T)
Parker Graham (T)
Brett van Sloten (T)

I have no idea who these guys are

Defensive Line

Obvious Locks:

Haloti Ngata (DT/NT)
Chris Canty (DE/DT)

Timmy Jernigan (DL)

Solid Bets:

Brandon Williams (NT/DT)
Brent Urban (DE)

It's tough to really assign anybody a specific position on the Baltimore hybrid front, but we're probably looking at Canty at DE, Ngata at DT, and Williams at NT. Jernigan could eventually be a starter at any of the DL positions, but most likely to bump Williams from the starting lineup (and shifting Ngata to NT) or replace Canty.

On the Bubble:

DeAngelo Tyson (DT)
Kapron Lewis-Moore (DE)
Terrence Cody (NT)

Expect 1-2 of these guys on the 53-man roster. Tyson's gotten better each year, Cody worse. Lewis-Moore was injured his entire rookie year, so he's a complete wild card.

Longshots:

Levi Brown
Derrick Hopkins
Cody Larsen
James Meder
A.J. Pataiali'i

What up, practice squad. A.J. your name is pretty boss though.

Inside Linebackers

Obvious Locks:

Daryl Smith
C.J. Mosley

Arthur Brown

On the Bubble:

Josh Bynes
Arthur McClellan

Core special teamers and former UDFAs, there's probably only room for Bynes, but McClellan could sneak in since he can play inside and out.

Longshots:

Ryan Jones
Zach Orr

It seems like every year we find an ILB UDFA who can ball, and he ends up signing a big contract (usually with somebody else) and not being worth it. Any one of these guys could be the next Bart Scott/Danell Ellerbe/Josh Bynes.

Outside Linebackers

Obvious Locks:

Terrell Suggs
Courtney Upshaw

Elvis Dumervil

Upshaw and Dumervil split time fairly evenly, but Upshaw the run-stopper will be on the field 1st down.

Solid Bets:

John Simon
Pernell McPhee

This position group is basically a sure thing, with all five players returning, and no meaningful competition.

Longshots:
Adrian Hamliton
Xavius Boyd
D.J. Bryant

Secondary

Obvious Locks:

Lardarius Webb (CB)
Jimmy Smith (CB)
Matt Elam (SS)
Terrence Brooks (FS)

Elam and Brooks are both capable of playing either Safety spot, but these are their natural positions.

Solid Bets:

Chykie Brown (CB)
Asa Jackson (CB/RS)
Darian Stewart (S)

We went out and got Stewart over the offseason, so I guess the coaches are into him. Shrug.

On the Bubble:

Bryden Trawick (S)
Omar Brown (S)
Anthony Levine (S)
Jeromy Miles (S)

Last year we started the season with 9 DBs and ended with 10 or 11. That means expect 2-3 of these guys to stick, with Brown the most likely odd man out. He's been the best safety of the group, but the worst special teamer

Longshots:

Sammy Seamster (CB)
Avery Patterson (CB)
Ayodeji Olatoye (CB)
Otis Tremain Jacobs (CB)
Dexter Moody (FS)

There could be room for a CB to wrestle his way aboard, particularly Seamster who has great measurables but little experience

Specialists

Obvious Locks:

Justin Tucker (K)

Our only pro bowler last year.

Solid Bets:

Sam Koch (P)
Morgan Cox (LS)

These guys have been around awhile and are getting expensive, but the front office has indicated their jobs are in danger.

Longshots:

Richie Leon (P)

Projected 53-Man Roster

Offense (25)

QB: Joe Flacco, Tyrod Taylor, Keith Wenning (3)
RB: Ray Rice, Bernard Pierce, Lorenzo Taliaferro (3)
FB: Kyle Juszczyk (1)
WR: Torrey Smith, Steve Smith, Marlon Brown, Jacoby Jones, Michael Campanaro, Aaron Mellette (6)
TE: Dennis Pitta, Owen Daniels, Crockett Gilmore (3)
OL: Eugene Monroe (LT), Kelechi Osemele (LG), Jeremy Zuttah (C), Marshal Yanda (RG), Rick Wagner (T), Will Rackley (G),John Urschel (G-C), AQ Shipley (C/G) (9)

I remember GMs talking about that recently, as well as a rule change for making the cut from 90 directly to 53 rather than having the 75-man roster phase in between, but I imagine if any of those were going to effect this season it would have happened earlier. Didn't the competition committee already decide on all the proposals put forward?

I don't think Blaine is a lock at all. He only cost a 6th rounder, and the 49ers were perfectly willing to dump Colt McCoy last year if he hadn't taken a pay cut. I'd say he's a good bet, but not a lock. They only carried two QBs on the roster last year, and I expect that will continue this year.

Also, I'd give Asante Cleveland a better than even shot at beating Celek out for the 3rd TE spot. He's a much better blocker, and was a decent passing target when they actually used him in Miami. He'll also be a big risk to cut for the practice squad, as he was highly sought-after by the Patriots as a UDFA.

QBs:

Locks:
Brian Hoyer
Johnny Manziel

Bubble:
Connor Shaw
Tyler Thigpen

Basically, if Shaw shows more potential than Thigpen he can get the 3rd spot. Johnny v. Brian is the most bizarre QB1 competition I can remember (biggest cult of personality guy v. Tom Brady assman for the title).

RBs:

Locks:
Ben Tate
Terrance West

Bubble
Edwin Baker
Dion Lewis
Isaiah Crowell

Baker and Lewis are old-regime guys so who knows. Crowell is talented and could take the RB3 spot. Wouldn't be shocked to see 2 out of 3 bubbles make the roster

FBs:

Chris Ogbonnaya

Bubble:
Ray Agnew

No comment. This position sucks.

WRs:

Locks:
Josh Gordon
Travis Benjamin
Miles Austin
Andrew Hawkins
Earl Bennett

IR: Nate Burleson

Bubble:
Josh Cooper
Tori Gurley
Charles Johnson
Chandler Jones
Jonathan Krause
Kenny Shaw
Willie Snead
Connor Vernon

Fighting over really 1-2 spots in the rotation. Cooper has the most experience, but old regime and with Weeden so eh. I'd saw Shaw and Snead are the guys worth watching here.

TEs:

Locks:
Jordan Cameron
Gary Barnidge

Bubble:
Marquis Gray

Nope:
Jim Dray
Andre Smith

Barnidge is really a FB too, and Cameron is quickly becoming the best TE not named Jimmy Graham (Gronk is never healthy and doesn't count). Gray might make it based on trick plays, but his blocking is pure poo poo and I don't know what Pettine will say to that.

OL:

Locks:
Joe Thomas
Joel Bitonio
Alex Mack
Jason Pinkston
Mitchell Schwartz

Solid:
John Greco
Paul Mcquistan

Bubble:
Garrett Gilkey
Reid Fragel
Chris Faulk
Keavon Milton
Michael Phillipp
Martin Wallace
Jeremiah Warren

Fighting largely over Schwartz remaining a starter and the backup spots. The first four locks are all starters. Fragel and Gilkey are the most likely to jump up, then Faulk, then everyone else. gently caress John Greco. I hope any of the bubble guys make it over him

DL:
Locks:
Phil Taylor
Billy Winn
Desmond Bryant

Solid
Ahtyba Rubin
John Hughes
Is'whatever Kitchen
Armonty Bryant

Bubble:
Justin Staples
Elhadji Ndiaye
Calvin Barnett
Cam Henderson

Good depth here. Rubin might go because of cap but otherwise would be a lock. Really I feel bad because we could easily take 7 of these guys and just be a rotating menace up front.

LB:
Locks:
Karlos Dansby
Paul Kruger
Jabaal Sheard
Barkevious Mingo
Christian Kirksey

Solid:
Craig Robertson
Quentin Groves

Bubble:
Tank Carder
Zac Diles
Darius Eubanks
Brandon Magee
Eric Martin

Interesting group. 3-4 requires a lot of guys at LB for attrition's sake. Three OLBs and two ILBs are locks. Just a matter of who backs up the ILB and who is the best utility.

DBs:
Locks:
Joe Haden
Justin Gilbert
Pierre Desir
Donte Whitner
Tashaun Gipson

Solid:
Buster Skrine

Bubble:
Jamoris Slaughter
Royce Adams
Josh Aubrey
John Bademosi
Darwin Cook
T.J. Heath
Leon McFadden
Julian Posey
Jordan Poyer
Isaiah Trufant

No clue who backup S is, likely Slaughter. 4 deep at corner since Skrine is a near lock. Desir gives the ability to put Gilbert or Haden in slot coverage and still have someone on the boundary. Solid at the top, terrible past it. Leon McFadden is real bad.

K: Billy Cundiff
P: Spencer Lanning
LS: Christian Yount

Projected 53 man:
Offense: 25
QBs; Hoyer, Manziel, Shaw
RBs: Tate, West, Crowell, Baker
FB: Ogbonnaya
WR: Gordon Iprovided he can play[, Benjamin, Austin, Hawkins, Bennett, Shaw, Cooper/Snead (if Gordon is gone)
TE: Cameron, Barnidge, Gray
OL: Thomas, Bitonio, Mack, Pinkston, Schwartz, Greco, Mcquistan, Gilkey

Defense: 25
DL: Taylor, Winn, Desmond Bryan, Armonty Bryan, Hughes, Rubin, Kitchen,
LBs: Dansby, Kruger, Mingo, Kirksey, Robertson, Groves, Carder, Eubanks
DBs: Haden, Gilbert, Skrine, Desir, Mcfadden, Whitner, Groves, Slaughter, Bademosi, Trufant

K: Billy Cundiff
P: Spencer Lanning

If I have my way, we don't even bother with Ogbonnaya and add a receiver spot, but this is a way better roster than I'm used to out of the Browns, so no complaints here.

Mundy can't be any worse than Major Wright was.

And I'll semi-defend Conte, to the point where he was often put in terrible loving situations due to a lovely and injured defensive line and linebacking core. When running backs are consistantly getting to the second and third level because your D-Line and Linebackers can't tackle/cover the right gap for poo poo, you are going to look foolish in the open field against competent Running Backs. Also it's pretty easy to be exposed in coverage when you have to have 8-9 in the box at all times to prevent loving Brandon Jacobs/Or whoever that scrub was on the Browns from running for 200+ yards on you. Which opens up your secondary in a hilariously bad way.

Conte wasn't good last year by any stretch of the imagination. I just don't think last year is his baseline quality of play going forward. My feelings on Conte can be summed up as "At least he was in the right position where he is shown on the camera getting beat by the runningback/reciever" unlike Major Wright who shot the wrong gap, Or Shea who is getting manhandled by a tight end.

Wouldn't fit...
Minnesota Vikings

QB
Locks: Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater
Solid Bets: Christian Ponder
Longshots: Travis Partridge

Cassel is the front runner to start this year. Bridgewater is the future and Ponder will likely stick around this year, because he’s a cheap veteran with starting experience. I’m not familiar with Partridge, so I assume that he is a camp arm.

HB

Locks: Adrian Peterson, Jerick McKinnon
Solid Bets: Matt Asiata
Longshots: Joe Banyard, Dominique Williams

Peterson is an obvious lock. McKinnon is a 3rd round pick and known project, so he’s not going anywhere. Asiata ran surprisingly well when given a chance last season, but he’s a pure north-south runner and will likely make the roster due to special teams play. Banyard is a 3rd down back type and I’m not familiar with Williams.

FB

Locks: Rhett Ellision
Solid Bets: Jerome Felton
Longshots: Zack Line

I put Ellision here, since he functions as an H-back and blocking TE. Felton is only a solid bet, because he is expensive and Turner could potentially choose to handle FB differently than Musgrave did. Line isn’t a great blocker, but has some ability as a runner and can be dangerous in the passing game. If his blocking can improve, then he may be an intriguing player to Turner.

OT

Locks: Matt Kalil, Phil Loadholt
Solid Bets: Antonio Richardson
Longshots: Pierce Burton, Matt Hall, Kevin Murphy, Mike Remmers, J’Marcus Webb*

The Vikings have bookends in Kalil and Loadholt, but not much after them. Richardson seems like a good bet to make the roster at this point. He has knee issues, which could limit his career to only 4 or 5 years, but he should be good depth and could potentially start if needed. After that, they have a lot of young guys competing for a roster spot. The Vikings have also been talking to J’Marcus Webb about bringing him back as depth. He was much maligned in Chicago, but played well when he filled in for the Vikings last year.

OC

Locks: John Sullivan
Solid Bets: N/A
Longshots: Zac Kerin

Sullivan is entrenched as the starter. Kerin is a rookie FA from Toledo, but will have an uphill battle making the roster. Charlie Johnson or one of other guards would be more likely to slide over to C if Sullivan gets hurt again.

OG

Locks: Brandon Fusco, David Yankey
Solid Bets: Charlie Johnson, Joe Berger
Longshots: Jeff Baca, Connor Boffeli, Vladimir Ducasse, Austin Wentworth

Fusco is the starter at RG and Yankey looks to be the future at LG, but may not start right away. Johnson is the incumbent starter at LG and can play all 5 OL spots, so he’ll likely stick around even if someone beats him out at LG, though he is expensive, which could make him attractive to cut. After those three Baca and Ducasse have the best shots at making the final roster.

Edit: Forgot about Berger, but he has a decent chance of sticking around.

TE

Locks: Kyle Rudolph, Rhett Ellison [Already listed as a FB/H-Back]
Solid Bets: Chase Ford, AC Leonard
Longshots: Allen Reisner

Rudulph is the clear starter and I expect the Vikings to carry 4 TEs along with Ellison as an H-back. Ford was surprisingly decent when called upon last season, so he should have a good shot at making the roster. AC Leonard is a tremendous talented receiving TE with off the field issues, if he works hard and stays out of trouble then, he could very well make the roster. Allen Reisner is a 4th TE type of a guy.

WR

Locks: Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jarius Wright
Solid Bets: Jerome Simspon
Longshots: Kain Colter, Donte Foster, Jean Lestar, Kamar Jorden, Erik Lora, Rodney Smith, Adam Thielen

Jennings, Patterson, and Wright all look to be heavily featured in Turner’s offense. Simpson should stick around unless he has further legal issues. The 5th receiver spot is an absolute crapshoot, though I think that Colter, Lora, Smith, and Thielen have the best shot of making the roster and another 1 or 2 of them could land on the practice squad.

DE

Locks: Brian Robison, Everson Griffen, Scott Crichton
Solid Bets: Corey Wootton
Longshots: Rahim Cox, Spencer Nealy, Tyler Scott, Jake Snyder, Justin Trattou

Robison, Griffen, and Crichton are locks. Wootton is a near lock and I am not sure if Zimmer will carry 4 or 5 ends, since after Wootton things drop off considerably.

DT

Locks: Linval Jospeh, Sharrif Floyd
Solid Bets: Fred Evans, Tom Johnson
Longshots: Chase Baker, Isame Faciane, Randall Kheeston, Shamar Stephen

Jospeh and Floyd are the starters. Evans should stick around and Johnson is a bit more iffy. Baker was on the roster last season and Stephen is a draft pick, who could stick as a 5th DT, though he projects more as NT than a UT/3-Technique. Faciane played for the Vikings new DL coach at Florida International.

LB

Locks: Anthony Barr, Chad Greenway
Solid Bets: Jasper Brinkley, Audie Cole, Gerald Hodges, Michael Mauti
Longshots: Larry Dean, Brandon Watts

Barr is a lock and I nearly listed Greenway as a solid bet. His performance has declined over the past 3 years, but will be used in a new role and will likely stick around since he’s a veteran in the last year of his contract. Brinkley should be the 2-down MLB, but will be pushed by Mauti and Cole and Hodges provide depth and some coverage ability on the outside. Larry Dean is a special teamer, but I don’t think he deserves a linebacker spot and Watts is a coverage linebacker with 4.4 speed who could be a nickel linebacker in Zimmer’s scheme. I think the Vikings will carry 6 or 7 linebackers.

CB

Locks: Captain Munnerlyn, Xavier Rhodes
Solid Bets: Shaun Prater, Josh Robinsons
Longshots: Derek Cox, Kip Edwards, Kendall James, Jabari Price, Marcus Sherels, Robert Steeples

There is decent depth, but not a lot of top end talent after Rhodes and Munnerlyn. Honestly, this will be the biggest spot for competition on the roster. The secondary is Zimmer’s specialty, so I am hopeful he will get decent play out of whomever ends up on the roster, but things are really murky. Sherels is listed as a long shot, since McKinnon will be looked at as a punter returner, but Sherels is has proven to be a good punt returner and has improved at corner, so he has the best shot out of the longshots to make the roster.

S

Locks: Harrison Smith
Solid Bets: Kurt Coleman, Antone Exum, Jamarca Sanford, Andrew Sendejo, Robert Blanton
Longshots: Brandon Bishop, Mistral Raymond

Much like corner, there is a lot of depth, but outside of Harrison Smith there isn’t much top end talent. Coleman and Exum have the best shots of making the roster. Sanford could stick around, but he’s pricey and there are too many similarly talented players, but cheaper players on the roster. Sendejo has proven to be good depth and Blanton can provide depth at both S and CB. There will be fierce competition for the starting SS job.

Specialists

Locks: Blair Walsh, Jeff Locke, and Cullen Loeffler
Solid Bets: N/A
Longshots: N/A

Specialist should stay the same this year.

Overall, not much competition on offense save for 5th wide receiver and OL depth, but competition everywhere on defense. Some vets are likely to get cut on defense, so it will be a very different looking unit under Zimmer.
