We all love video games. But there's that one feature, that one level or enemy that gets under your skin and drives you nuts.

Splinter Cell: Conviction
There's no way to remap buttons on the Xbox 360. Even worse, there's no way to adjust sensitivity to the analog sticks for the camera. If you whiff on a headshot in this game, not only do you make the enemies even twitchier than they already are but you also run the risk of giving away your position and may have to relocate in order to get a better chance at scoring a kill. Having Left Trigger be to go into cover or drop from hanging on a ledge/pipe doesn't help if you're used to other games mapping aiming-down-sights to Left Trigger.

No matter how big or small that thing is, post away!

Enemies teleporting in behind my party in Dragon Age: Origins. I go through the effort of clearing out an area, only for another group of enemies to appear in a puff of smoke as soon as I start to leave.

I just finished playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on PC. This game has a few things dragging it down. [edit - I got carried away and typed several things dragging this game down! Here is just one thing dragging this game down!]

Towards the end of the game, there's a jump where you swing from a bar to a very narrow ledge. No matter what I did, the game refused to register that drat ledge. I'd line it up perfectly with the camera and make the jump only to watch in frustration as he made the landing then slid a few feet to the left where he fell to his death.

Yeah, this was during the no repeats section. :argh: Other things dragging this game down include, briefly: Terrible wonky camera that spins all over the place and sometimes gets stuck in a wall and bland combat that features waves of 10-30 of the same six dudes over and over and over again (platforming was great, but the combat sections are easily the worst part of the game overall).

While I generally enjoyed South Park: The Stick of Truth for some reason they went way overboard with the combat system. There are all kinds of status ailments and various abilities you can use but the enemies just don't justify it. They're almost all extremely simple and can be killed just from regular attacks.

What's the point of playing anything other than a mage? Mages are just the best. Do the mage tower ASAP and get yourself a three-mage party. Do the elf one next so you can specialise one as an arcane warrior. The fourth member should be a rogue so you can open locks.

Ocarina of Time did pretty well with it, although as I recall that was actually a full cancelled game that was simplified and balled into something else. It was that 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' era, they didn't know better.

Heroes of Might and Magic VI has a campaign mission that is, as far as I can tell, impossible unless you knew it was coming. The second map of the Necromancer campaign has only an extremely finite amount of units and resources,and no cities; playing conservatively and losing as few troops as possible is key.

In fairness, the Necromancer army is the one best suited for such a thing; they're geared very defensively and have in-built methods of healing. But even that's not enough, you need to specifically design your necromancer hero as a defensive healer-type just to survive that map. My necromancer was geared towards doing a shitton of Cold damage, which didn't work, I had to go back to the first map and redo it with the 'correct' build.

What the game doesn't tell you is that you shouldn't do those side missions because you won't have anywhere near the proper equipment for them.

PvP took place in special zones, and the hero/villains both had safe areas guarded by invincible, insta-kill NPC's.
There was a skill that let you teleport enemies to you.
See where this is going?

Even better, you could be chain-teleported by a coordinated group. "Safe" in your base? Talking to the NPC so you could leave the zone? Ha ha not anymore!

Do you mean Blacklist? Conviction is the 24-knockoff with the sweet co-op and Deniable Ops mode that will lock equipment from your characters who have gently caress all to do with Fisher until you progress through the main game and unlock those weapons in the story mode.

PvP had some significant issues in CoH, because it really wasn't designed for it. Even outside of teleporting exploits, it was unbalanced as all hell, with any attempts at balancing only really shifting the issue instead of eradicating it. There were always certain builds that were just better than others, and no attempts really solved that.

The meta became 'what hasn't been nerfed yet/recently', an when they basicaly gave up on PvP a few years before the shutdown the answer was actually the Dark sets, which had a secondary effect that just never got nerfed.

Final Fantasy 14, the giant frog enemies. Most particularly the Nix. I hate when things are always hostile and always attack you and god dammit I just want to run past. What the giant frogs do is basically grab you with their tongues and pulls you towards them the second they aggro you. Nixes also inflict heavy on you, so not only do they yank you back as you run past them you are now moving half as fast for 10 seconds.


Also their faces annoy me.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, the developers tried to make the game feel as close to THPS2 as possible. For some reason however, they decided to not let you create your own playlist so you could avoid the lower quality songs. This is especially baffling because it was one of the most welcomed changes in the third game, and has remained a feature in all of the games since.

I want to listen to Goldfinger, not Lateef the Truthspeaker! :arghfist::qq:



Also most of the tracks exclusive to the HD version are absolute garbage

Payday 2's stupid card drop system. gently caress JUST LET ME BUY WHAT WEAPON MODS I WANT JESUS CHRIST :argh: I like being a sneaky bastard but I only found a silencer for my rifle (they come in pistol and rifle sizes, there's multiples kinds of each but the differences are fairly minor) yesterday, and I've owned the game since loving launch. Same deal with colors - you can customize your masks but despite drowning in patterns to apply I don't have any loving colors to apply them with. It's a fairly fun game but gently caress's SAKE does the drop system irk me.

Guacamelee & Valdis Story : Abyssal City and probably a lot of other beat-em-up/platformers.

They combine platforming that is just a bit too tight for the engine to handle with a lot of enemies with ranged attack during the platforming. And in a lot of the cases you can't even kill the enemies before. In VS whenever you leave the screen enemies respawn and in a lot of the cases the enemies are placed so that after killing them you have to leave the screen to get in position for the platforming. it also had some enemies with an infinite range AoE spell so they could be inaccessible but still attack you. Guacamelee had the annoying flying dragons with a burst ranged attack.

Guacamelee had a system where if you fell into a bottomless pit you respawned on the last platform, unfortunately they also had a lot of platforms at the bottom to catch you, so instead of respawning you just had to do it all over again.

I've been replaying Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and while it's a pretty enjoyable game, I had forgotten just how bad the first boss, Mogenar, is.

For those of you haven't played the game or have somehow forgotten the tedium, the only way to damage Mogenar is by shooting 4 small red orbs on him, except they're only shown for about a second at a time and when they aren't shown you can't damage him. Shooting the orbs makes them gradually turn white then break, but whenever you aren't shooting them they heal. And since sometimes he covers the orbs for a long period of time, they often completely heal.

So then you finally break an orb and you can actually damage him by destroying the spot the orb was in. The only way to do this is by shooting at the slot in hypermode (hope you have the 100 energy hypermode requires), all while the slot is still being covered most of the time. And if you can't destroy the slot fast enough he uses a move that replaces the orb. Good luck stopping the move on the hardest difficulty!

I guess the reaction to hobo Sam must have been pretty powerful since Ubisoft turned the car around on that one, but amazingly they decided to go ahead with not-Michael-Ironside Sam, which is still grinding my gears.

I think Ironside himself probably decided to quit. I remember an interview with him before Conviction came out where he said that he was tired of playing the same character for so long and was going to leave, but he read the script for Conviction and liked the way the story was more personal to Sam and decided to do it anyway. The official excuse was that they wanted a younger actor to do the mo-cap stuff for Blacklist, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ironside just wasn't impressed with the script for Blacklist and decided to continue with his plan to retire from Splinter Cell.

I think the new guy did a perfectly good job, but he just didn't have a chance to live up to a voice as distinctive as Ironside's, especially when Ironside's been playing that character since the beginning.

They don't heal. They move around. The orbs switch what spot they are in. Also, the move that replaces/heals the orbs is also your key to getting more energy to use hypermode. Destroy the hands to get pickups.

Apparently he was also put off by the increase of violence in the series. While Sam has always carried guns they were mostly a last resort and if you constantly used them you were playing the game wrong.

He actually mentions in this interview that it was part of the reason he almost didn't come back for Conviction. I don't know if it's so much based on awareness of what actually happens gameplay-wise or if he just thinks the storyline has gotten too dumb/violent.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

I just got Soul Calibur V for cheap a while back, and the discovery that unlocking most of the weapons and character creation option are locked behind grinding up levels is bringing me down.

Not to mention that my favorite mode in any Soul Calibur game, Chronicle of the Sword, still hasn't made a comeback. :mad:

Any nonstealth game that attempts to force stealth on you for a certain level or mission, and you fail and have to start over if you get spotted. Usually pared with the equally obnoxious No-Gear level. If the game has my guy murdering dudes by the dozen with an arsenal of weapons, don't take that away and force me to sneak around, it's the fastest way to make me ragequit a game. If I want to play a stealth game I'd go play Metal Gear Solid.

Bound By Flame is a budget RPG that has no shortage of things dragging it down, but it's the terrible combat that really stands out. You can quickly toggle between warrior and ranger style combat, the former being a more methodical style based around properly timed parrying and counterattacking while the latter is based more around getting in quick attacks and dodging effectively. Warrior style is effectively useless because it's pretty much only appropriate for 1-on-1 battles but every encounter in the game is a mob of 4-5 enemies and there's usually no way to lure them away from each other. Your best bet is to stick with the ranger style and try to eliminate enemies as quickly as possible, which is never all that quick thanks to the absurd amount of HP the normal enemies always seem to have.

To make matters worse, leveling up your character and improving your equipment provide no noticeable sense of progression. You pretty much have access to all of the skills in the game from the start so your skill tree choices are all minor upgrades to the skills you already have. Finding better armor never makes your character any more durable than a wet bar napkin and better weapons never seem to chisel enemy health down any faster. You fight the same enemies throughout most of the game but they scale up considerably so you end up feeling like you're growing weaker as you advance.

I think Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has the worst case of this I've ever seen. Your dude can literally kill Satan in a one-on-one fight, but those red guys with grenade launchers are apparently way out of your league and remain so for the entire game.

Also most Zeldas seem to have one at some point. I'd say Wind Waker is the worst. I've never actually beaten that section, I ended up getting my roommate to do it for me after blowing like half an hour on it.

It's not too terrible. The worst part is when you reach an interior section that introduces Miniblins and you start freaking out because these smiling demon things are chasing you around and you don't have your sword handy.
