The inventory system in Earthound. Some SNES classics can get a little outdated at times (Super Metroid, the FF games etc.) but this is really bad. It's really telling that so many people are willing to put up with it time and time again for the writing, which is incredible.

Sire Oblivion posted:I never played it, but what's wrong with the inventory system? Is it that drastically different from other games that it's a hindrance? It's really small, and equipment takes up regular inventory spots so it's smaller than it looks. Also, there's no "key item" section so stuff like the sound stone, ATM card, among a ton of other key items all take up a spot. It means that you barely ever have the inventory space to bring healing items along and you can never play around with the condiments feature which they push early on. Also you're constantly depositing and withdrawing your items with Escargot Express and it's pretty frustrating to get through the monkey cave just to need to go all the way out to pick up the pencil eraser that you deposited. It's really bad and you're struggling with it pretty much the whole game.

I think Resident Evil 5 is a fun little game, that's doomed to be the sequel to one of the best ever. It's not the only game cursed with this fate.

I think it's extremely important to have content you can miss in most games. Discovering something means a whole lot more when you really discovered it and there's not a checklist or quest log leading you and a thousand other players there.

Sire Oblivion posted:Do you mean miss as in things you can go back and enjoy without restarting the game again, right? More as in dynamic stuff not every player is supposed to find or expected to. Something like some of the hidden areas in Dark Souls, for example. I don't think there should be stuff arbitrarily gated from any player, if possible. Exceptions can be made for some things though.

...of SCIENCE! posted:The story is great because it's taking the piss out of Metal Gear Solid by being so openly stupid. Usually the MGS games are a mishmash of goofy and self-serious, full of soliloquies about war and technology and all the enemies and heroes alike having tragic backstories that they constantly agonize over but also poop and boner jokes, here Raiden's entire arc is learning to dehumanize himself and face to bloodshed and the enemies are hilariously, cartoonishly evil to the point where they're butchering orphans in the name of returning to THE GOOD OL' DAYS AFTER 9/11 and they turned the much-criticized nanomachines plot from MGS4 into a punchline to explain why Dick Cheney is the final boss. Yeah you have to have something wrong with you not to enjoy the plot of MGR

Flying Cheep-Cheeps in pretty much every Mario platformer. I never played much of the 2D games as a kid, so maybe I'm just bad but no matter what game they are, the original, or NSMBU. They fly out of nowhere and kill me. It's not so bad when you can breeze through the level fast, but if you're trying to grab a star coin or a powerup then they come out and kill me before I even notice.

Yeah, it would be nice if games didn't lock single player stuff behind multiplayer as a rule, because I'd like to be able to come back to stuff when this stuff stops getting serviced in 5 years.
