Haha jesus I am comically bad at tailing people, and the pool of players it'll connect me to is apparently incredibly small so I keep getting the same players multiple times in a row. I bet it's really weird on their end that I keep basically running up and handing them notoriety points.

Fun game though

Get way ahead of them and block up the road. Lay down some IEDs (in case you get an opportunity to blow something up without harming the target) and take cover. Shoot out the target's tires and it's a straight gunfight from there until there's nobody else left.

If I wanted in depth differences between guns I'd go play a shooter instead of a game like this. The only thing that seems really off balance wise is that the first gun you get is also the only silenced gun, so I just find myself using that 90% of the time since all the other guns alert enemies.

I've actually found a couple more silenced guns, with even longer sniping range than the default pistol AND burst fire so I barely have to aim at all any more.

I enjoy the gang hideout missions a lot, they're just like the outposts in Far Cry 3. Convoys are pretty fun too when you work out how to do them. It's weird that there are no missions that work the other way around though, where you kill one guy and leave the rest alive. Seems like an obvious one.

Yeesh the police AI in this is such monumental bullshit. I just tried doing a fixer mission where I steal a cop cruiser. Only I couldn't complete the thing since it never allowed me to escape the police for whatever stupid reason. I literally spent three minutes of this last attempt no less than four blocks away and out of view and it simply would not end the chase.

And yes, I've tried turning off the car in an alley in another attempt. It didn't work. Even though then too I was well out of sight from the AI on both the ground and in the air. I tried blackouts. I got all my pursuers to crash and even got out and shot the chopper with the destroyer and fly away. Does not matter that I moved far away from that spot (Since it would be where I was last seen), I got honed in on with the swiftness by three newly spawned in cars with ease.

It's not very clear in the game but chases have distinct phases, you won't be able to hide until the minimap turns gray. You have to keep driving in a direction and taking out cars until it lets you do stealth.

I'm ok with tailing now, and I can usually defend myself from an invader, but I'm still yet to actually hack anyone. It's mostly because it's a massive idiot. I got pretty close tonight but they caught me after 90% and I chose a big-rear end truck for my getaway vehicle - too slow to evade but too heavy to get taken out, so we spent a good few minutes having the slowest, dumbest cross-city chase you ever saw. Eventually I hit a dead end and just got out and let him take it. I regret nothing.

How the gently caress do you evade police? I can't run from them, hiding in the car just lets them catch me, the context hacking sucks; what am I supposed to do?

Literally just get in any car and drive in any direction.

Raise bridges as you go over them, but don't hack anything else until it starts beeping and flashing because that means you're definitely going to stop someone with it. Most cars can outrun a helicopter, or you can duck under the train tracks/underground tunnels.

Stopping and hiding doesn't work at all until they've lost you and you're in the stealth phase, but at that point it's much easier to drive out of the search radius anyway. I've never hidden since the introductory mission where you have to do it.

So if I'm in a story mission and a police scan starts, but there's no way to escape it because I'm "supposed" to get into a full chase and escape THAT, even though the outcome is essentially exactly the same, why bother with the scan at all? I just wasted a bunch of jam coms on a totally pointless exercise.

Also there was another part of the mission where it told me to get away from something, but when I got in a car and drove off it told me to get back in the mission area.

Why is the main quest in every open world Ubisoft game (if not every open world game) always total garbage?

I think you're giving the story some weight that's not really there. In the intro, it's Damien who's pushing to see what's going on and sets off the events. Aiden keeps telling him to focus and wants to drop safely.

And it's Jacks that says the "I'm like the healer" and then points out it's just a game. You're sort of right, but I get the feeling the writers didn't mean for it to go in this direction. I'd say it's mostly writing about this cool goon that's only cool from a sociopath's perspective.

Maybe you're just not giving the game enough credit? Aiden wanting to get out of a job safely has nothing to do with his character, that scene is more about Damien being greedy than anything. And when Jacks compares himself to a healer in a video game, then rebuffs Aiden's attempt to adopt that analogy to excuse the mass murder he just committed, that's another demonstration of Aiden not being as noble as he thinks he is.

That makes no sense, he wants to play it safe and that has no bearing on his character? If Damien listened the whole vendetta thing could have been avoided. And Jacks telling the guy that having something to fight for is neat in concept, but it's not a game (it totally is, how meta!) and people are actually dying doesn't seem to get through either.
In any case, he starts out a goon and ends a goon, even driving his family away doesn't phase him, where's the character growth? Even Altair realized he's not hot poo poo towards the end of AC1, as hamfisted as it might have been. There's a foundation for a good story there, but there are so many elements which seem thrown in for the sake of being there or were meant to be more meaningful but they ran out of time.

He wants to leave the Merlaut because he's in danger. A basic sense of self-preservation is not a notable character trait.

If Damien had listened it all could have been avoided - Aiden agrees with this and that's obviously why he doesn't want anything to do with Damien any more.

Aiden doesn't undergo any character growth and that's a big strike against the story as a whole, but we're not talking about whether the story's good or not, we're talking about the fairly stupid idea that the writers didn't know Aiden was a bad dude, even though every other character says it out loud at some point.

Realizing a job is going badly and trying to respond, instead of blindly ignoring the danger, is actually a sign of clear thinking under stress. In many heist stories / movies there's a 'reckless' character that acts rashly under danger, and a clear thinking character. In that scenario it sure seemed that Aiden had correctly identified they were in serious trouble and should have immediately aborted. Why would you interpret that as "Aiden is a coward that tried to save himself?"

Well you're right about him being good under pressure, but I don't know what that has to do with the conversation at hand, or how you got the idea that I think he's a coward?

Granted, it's Ubisoft, and I've yet to experience a developer/publisher that does well with variety. But exactly how similar is WD to AC? Please tell me there aren't exploration points that unlock additional parts of the city map and the laughable ability to ditch pursuers by jumping in a trashcan...

It plays a little closer to Far Cry 3 than AC I think, but yeah that still means it's Ubisoft as all heck. The map's open from the start though, and you mainly deal with pursuers by blowing them up.

Just powered through Bad Blood in one sitting. It doesn't do a whole lot differently from the main game, the story's still totally hokey and incoherent on the whole, but just having a protagonist who is vaguely likeable helps a ton. There are some great little moments between characters, and the end credits scene is actually adorable. Hopefully the bit in the last mission where they talk about staying in Chicago and teaming up with Aiden Pearce isn't a teaser for the sequel because holy poo poo nobody wants that.

Edit: spent some time with the side content today. The procedurally-generated "street sweep" missions are neat, especially in co-op. You can kind of destroy them all with the RC car though, since the stun gun doesn't count as a kill or a weapon use, and the AI is largely oblivious to it.

I didn't mind the driving missions in the main game but some of the new ones are just atrocious. loving escort missions, of all things.

The DLC is kind of like AC4 Freedom Cry or Infamous First Light, where the open world is a little bit remixed and you essentially go through the whole progression of the game again in a shorter time.

Unlike Freedom Cry, the scale of the world isn't reduced - you have the full map to run around in, a new full set of side activities to do (though unfortunately some of the mission types got swapped out for shittier ones), and even the multiplayer is intact (plus a new co-op mode).

The story is still all hokey and disjointed but it's much easier to swallow with a protagonist who isn't a massive dildo.

Overall I think it's a cool DLC, maybe too similar to the normal game to play them back to back, but great if you've had some time away and want to dip in again.
