schoolie meaning ex-schoolbus. Basically cheap as gently caress, massive amount of space, and a blank slate to do what you want.

THAT is my idea of a camper...

There was a sterling 6x6 with 36,000kms that went dirt cheap at auction here that would have been perfect, but i was broke at the time, it had 5.77 gears, and the rear axles were really close together, so you couldn't gear it up with rubber.

Warning: this might make some jealous.

My dad just picked this up at auction for $4000. 94 pace arrow 33 footer.

33 foot, interior is clean as hell. Has a 7000 watt generator with 400 hours on it and brand new tires all around. The best part:

Banks power pack on a chevy 454, basically ram air in-take, headers, and 4 inch exhaust. Adds 79hp, 96 ft/lbs and 20% fuel economy.

Squeaks in a dodge interior? well i never.

If the truck has an exhaust brake, the turbo could be sooted all to gently caress. cycle your key on and off 3 times ending with it in the on position, and it should start spitting codes out at you. If a p22xx code comes up you've got a fun weekend ahead of you.

Update on the 4krv, it came with a binder of it's entire history. Originally sold in california, previous owner spent $7,000 5000 miles ago in phoenix arizona rebuilding the front suspension including control arms, air bags, brakes all around and new tires on the rear.

$60,000 can buy a lot of interior furnishings and fuel.

Why the gently caress are roof top tents so god drat expensive.

A 6 man tent is $150. Put it between 2 pieces of plastic and add a hinge, $1750.

They delete the pics so it's hard to get an idea of quality, but looking through michener's recent results

2014 Nitro XLR 30ft TA BP Toy Hauler1 awning, 1 slide, 2 entries, $20,000
2008 Keystone Fusion 373 37ft Triaxle FW Toy Hauler, 3 slides $25750

I really don't pay attention to these, as they're not my thing, so i don't know if the smaller ones go cheaper, but That nitro retails for about $33k

Stateside we're getting hosed by the exchange good and hard.

If you've got cash in hand, the ritchie bros sale in GP is in 3 days, watch these and you might be surprised, although you would give up the truck space

I'm trying to figure out how to get the largest-area camper I can, but keep it below 1500 pounds, so I can tow it with a compact car.

The best option I've seen so far is the Trailmanor, this model has a dry weight of 2050 pounds and is a hard-wall pop-up so it should be even easier to tow since the aerodynamics are good: http://trailmanor.com/wordpress/2417-sport-series/

It's still 500 pounds too heavy though. I'm trying to figure out how practical it would be to reduce the weight further.

You can see here is has a steel chassis, so I could save a few hundred pounds by removing it and replacing it with aluminum: http://trailmanor.com/wordpress/superior-construction/

Besides that it would come down to alloy wheels instead of steel, aluminum or fiberglass propane tanks, and replacing appliances (swap fridge for mini-fridge, etc) and other deletions.

Failing that, the only other option I can see is these modular "Teal Tailfeather" panels:

http://www.tealinternational.com/TailFeather/

You bring your own trailer bed, then put those panels together on top of it like Legos. They're claiming the weight for a 5x10 trailer is just 1,100 pounds including the trailer. But, they seem to be on some kind of hiatus and there's no links to buy the panels. That while they're amazingly utilitarian, like me, they're also super fugly, like me. They're not as much space as the Trailmanor, though the insulation looks spectacular.

Anyone else have any ideas?

There was a canadian compay called boler who made little trailers in the 70s that were supposed to be around 1000lbs.

You'd be looking at about 5 grand for a trailer that needs a reno, but you could go nuts all over the inside with lighter materials.

The brits tend to get away with some large trailers with mechanically identical cars, so i doubt that much will be a problem.

Something else I wanted to ask. This is called a tracking trailer, used for gardening:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ye6NxujqG3c

The load is balanced across all four wheels, and both sets of wheels turn to follow where it is being led to.

Is there some reason I'm missing as to why no-one makes a highway-grade version of something like these to pull a camper?

They tried this with heavy trucks a long time ago, and they were called wiggle wagons. At speed, your movements and corrections would be amplified by the trailer making the same movements moments later.

That's hosed up. Someone broke into my TT in a similar suburbia storage lot over the winter, but all they did was pop the window open and leave once they didn't immediately see anything valuable like a TV (ours is a tiny 17" that's mounted out of sight anyway). They were small time, but still knew how to dodge the alarm system and barbed wire of the compound. Who knows how long the window was left open considering it was almost 5 months between it being winterized and going in storage and me going to pick it up in the spring, but thankfully I didn't find any water damage except a tiny bit to the corner of the table closest to the window.

But jesus, completely running off with something that big? Where do the thieves plan on selling something that big and easy to track without getting caught?

The vin requirements and tracking are no where near as robust for trailers as they are for regular vehicles. They usually just pop the old vin tag off, put a new one on, and register it with the new vin and then sell it.

Sometimes they just drag them out into the bush to use as hunting shacks. Sometimes they just slap a stolen trailer plate on and get away with using them for a few years before torching them and finding another.

Some dudes here stole a pile of ATVs and trailers over the course of 6 months from a storage yard they had the gate code for. they got caught with a pile of em in the process of being flipped and the cops said a bunch are still out there and registered with fake vin tags.

Welp time to buy a Lo Jack or whatever the equivalent is these days.

I'm guessing no cameras or alarms at that lot then? Our storage lot has cameras all around the perimeter and a unique code for each user that gets logged when used, and an alarm system that activates if any of the perimeter is breached. They've never had any outright thefts thankfully, just the occasional lowlife that tries to break in and steal camper contents.

they had cameras, but it was weeks or months by the time an item was noticed to be missing and if you're stealing a camper, might as well do it with a stolen truck.

Its not hard to figure out somebody's code when consumer point and shoot cameras can read a license plate from half a mile away.

Yeah, in a truck, on ice, leave the diffs unlocked and breaking traction just spins 2 of 8 tires(or 12 in jonathan's case) and nothing happens. Let off the throttle, let it get back to road speed, and gently get back on the throttle. In a pickup, you break traction, the limited slip grabs and spins both tires up and the back end slides. This is why new pickups usually only come with an open diff or an e-locker. Pick-ups can snap out of line. trucks kind of gently creep out of line. they only snap if you over-react. Everything happens far far slower.
