well, that was discouraging. 200 views and not a single comment about the movie. alright then, let try something else. "Seventeen Moments of Spring" - this one is a behemoth of soviet cinematography. made in 1973. 12 series (hour each) about a soviet spy deep undercover in nazi headquarters in the last months of WW2. this in not your general 007 action. its a psychological drama. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQfYzamr-hM

Only five minutes in but this is totally awesome and thank you for posting it. It really feels like all the best scenes in Russian movies consist of people walking through forests.

It doesn't appear to be on Youtube with any English subtitling, but there's always 1936's Circus, with its amazingly hammy villain and hilariously syrupy ending song about how the USSR loves the world's dejected black children.

Another good recommendation would be 1976's The Irony of Fate, which is a much-loved Soviet romantic comedy. The premise of it is basically that, because of centralized production and nationalized industry, everything looks so similar that the male lead ends up getting drunk on New Year's Eve, accidentally boarding a plane to another city, and going to his own address there, only to find that his key works and the apartment is identical. He falls asleep, and wakes up when the woman who owns the apartment walks in. Her husband accuses her of cheating, as does his fiancee. Here's the animated intro to that film (it's a live action production): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHdFd2RKRSI Speaking off animation, I love Soviet animation. Here's a few of particular interest. An adaptation of Ray Bradbury's There Will Come Soft Rains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LNHYz89sNc Russian cartoon Captain Pronin, Supercop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jdgFCg_rxc Here's a bit of Estonian folklore, with Suur Töll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDEI06J00nk And though it predates the USSR, it's worth noting that this may be the world's earliest animation (animation was invented in Russia and the US at roughly the same time), the stop-motion Insect's Chirstmas. I believe that the stop-motion tradition in Russian animation led them to be much more open-minded about the kind of materials animation could include: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCZL4K6E1jc

One of my favorites is Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964) by Sergei Parajanov, who, like many, faced some pretty brutal oppression by the state for being eccentric and brilliant. It's kind of a folk fairy tale about this epic love between two villagers in the mountains from the time they are children onward. The photography and editing are really wild in the best way, as you will probably see in the first couple of shots if you press play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GoXMSAMOyg

i guess whole eastern block would count. culture is not confined withing national borders. the next movie don't need introduction. really. Stalker - 1979 for those who is not familiar with tarkovsky's masterpiece - the film based on sci-fi book "roadside picnic". the story is about three man who venture into "zone", anomaly created by unexplained event that defies all natural laws. the rumor has it - within there is a artifact called "the room" that will grant your most desired wish. in my opinion this is the deepest movie of my generation, subconsciously touching your mind about things that truly matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYEfJhkPK7o Aydjile fucked around with this message at 01:30 on Aug 6, 2014 |

I just wish more of these movies were available in HD. I hate the idea of watching a Tarkovsky movie in standard def, just begs for a blu-ray release, but MosFilm have been really slow to migrate to HD. Don't get me started on War and Peace, which begs for a full-8k restoration treatment, and is currently only available as a muddy transfer on out-of-print dvds. It'd be like trying to watch Lawrence of Arabia on your phone, like what's the point.

Aydjile posted:Stalker - 1979 This movie pretty much proves that you don't really need anything but a good location, and a good eye to make a fantastic movie. I feel that since it's release, it's yet to be matched by anything in terms of general mood and cinematography. From what I hear, the whole movie was originally shot on experimental film stock that got damaged during the developing process, and Tarkovsky had to go back and reshoot the whole thing all over. On a different note, Kin-Dza-Dza and Ivan Vasilyevich are both classics, but two Mosfilm movies that will always have my heart are The Diamond Arm (Бриллиантовая Рука) and The White Sun of the Desert (Белое Солнце Пустыни) Both are on the Mosfilm channel. The White Sun of the Desert being a unique Soviet take on a spaghetti western.
