Aydjile posted:"Seventeen Moments of Spring" - this one is a behemoth of soviet cinematography. made in 1973. 12 series (hour each) about a soviet spy deep undercover in nazi headquarters in the last months of WW2. this in not your general 007 action. its a psychological drama. Only five minutes in but this is totally awesome and thank you for posting it. It really feels like all the best scenes in Russian movies consist of people walking through forests.

One of my favorites is Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964) by Sergei Parajanov, who, like many, faced some pretty brutal oppression by the state for being eccentric and brilliant. It's kind of a folk fairy tale about this epic love between two villagers in the mountains from the time they are children onward. The photography and editing are really wild in the best way, as you will probably see in the first couple of shots if you press play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GoXMSAMOyg

It was his second feature film, and it had the respect of everyone but Goskino, meaning the state completely screwed anyone out of ever getting to see it for a long time because it was the furthest thing from socialist realism.
