Hey guys just dipping my toe into this stuff. I have a smart plug (Tplink Kasa) with a lamp plugged in and a Sonos speaker that is Google Assistant compatible. Basically I just want to do something location aware (cell phone) that triggers a Google Home routine to turn on the lamp and start playing some jazz on my Sonos speaker. Is there any way to do accomplish this? I looked at IFTTT and I can seem to definitely do the location aware smart plug turn on thing but I can't seem to find a recipe to turn on music (spotify) on the Sonos. There are some Sonos recipes but they seem to relate to actually using the Sonos itself but I'm using Spotify with it through the Google Assistant connected functionality. Also I can't seem to find a way to do a location aware Google Home routine which is bizarre. It is so loving Google that they know everything about me but make me trigger a routine with a voice command haha.

What would you guys recommend for a simple 2 camera system? We're attached on one side so I only really need front and backdoor coverage. The front would look out from the porch to cover the driveway/road. The backdoor cam would basically just look down and cover the deck/backdoor. The whole solar/wifi camera thing looks tempting from an ease of installation perspective but the inability to 24/7 record and having to deal with batteries sucks so I think I'll go POE hardwired. I assume I need an NVR and 2 cameras of some sort but I have no idea about security systems. I might need a third camera for the side of the house but I'm not sure yet. Ideally I'd like something that has continuous recording and will alert on motion notifications with customization. Bonus if it can tie into an actual security system if I ever get one. Thanks for any recommendations. The Gunslinger fucked around with this message at 17:09 on Aug 17, 2020 |

FCKGW posted:Once I figured out how to setup Homebridge and bring my non-Homekit devices (mainly my tp-link switches) into the Apple ecosystem things have been much smoother. How did you do this? I've got a bunch of stuff that's only compatible with Google Home Assistant - some wifi light bulbs, a Sonos, etc. I really want to be done with the Google ecosystem so I'm seriously considering doing this. Do I need anything specific to get started with Homekit (bridge?) and what are my options for stuff like TP-Link power plugs that don't have Homekit compatibility? I see some hacky workarounds with IFTTT but I would prefer something more reliable and supported, my experience with IFTTT was all over the place. I assume I have to replace the Sonos with a Homepod for starters.

We have a Roborock S5 that is on its own VLAN since it kept phoning gigabytes of mapping info and our wifi credentials home to China. Very happy with it otherwise, does a great job. The only reason I'll get another one day is for self-empty.

^ Exactly. When my parents house was broken into, they ignored the front door entirely and used a sledgehammer on the patio door. Straight to the master and spare bedrooms for money/jewelry. Russian crew who were eventually caught, they had a woman who cased the neighborhoods first to make sure no one was home. My parents had an alarm and surveillance cameras, not that it mattered because they were in and out in four minutes. We have contact alarms on the windows and live in a more populated area so I don't worry about it that much. We have a ubolt pro which is for convenience more than anything else. I don't bother with second locks because of the above. Oh and keep valuables hidden in the pantry or laundry room under stuff.

Guy Axlerod posted:TP Link recently released their single-gang smart fan/light control. If you have a combo switch in a single "space" this might be what you want. You must have one hot and one neutral coming in, and two separate wires going to the fan. One for the fan motor and one for the light. https://www.kasasmart.com/us/products/smart-switches/kasa-ceiling-fan-control-and-dimmer-switch-ks240 Man it seemed ok until I started looking into it more. Some of the design choices are just puzzling. Why no tactile switches? Why does it illuminate when it’s on instead of being illuminated in the dark which would make actual sense? I really wanted something like this, we need them in three rooms even but those decisions are pants on head stupid so I guess I’m back to waiting. Anyone know of an alternative for single gang smart fan and light control?
