What's out there (audiobook specifically) that's similar to the Craft Sequence by Max Gladstone? I loved how rich the world was in those books. I'd prefer stuff that is light on romance, or at least queer if it's there. I just finished the Dragon Blood audio books by Lindsay Buroker and while I enjoyed those, they were aggressively straight at points. For reference, some of other stuff I've enjoyed have been A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown, and The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton. I guess these are more alternate world than urban fantasy exactly? But the worlds are more modern than traditional fantasy. I've listened to a bunch of Dresden Files years ago and those were fun, but protagonists who aren't straight white cis males would be more interesting.

October Daye might fit the bill. There’s more romance as the books go on but it’s pretty light and there’s definitely lots of queer to it the farther it goes along. The books are all light, fast reads. It’s a lot like Dresden but with less lovely characters and opinions.

Oh sweet, I've read and enjoyed some of Seanan McGuire's comics

Any idea how long between print and audio for the October Daye books? The wedding book was the last one on audible.

Been getting an itch for some urban fantasy, can anyone recommend something similar to Lukyanenko's Watch series? I liked the mundanity with which the magic was treated in the earlier books (like flicking fireballs at mosquitos) before the power levels went off the charts. The bureaucratic aspect of the conflict between the light and the dark was a lot of fun too

Thinking about catching up on dresden files as well but the last thing I read was Skin Game on release and I barely remember any of the overarching plot.

Bureaucratic aspect? The Craft Sequence is all about magic just being part of daily life. Bonus points for not having cishet white guy protagonists. All six books so far published are complete in their selves, but they all take place in the same world and characters cross over, so reading them in publication order is still a good idea.

How heavy is the romance element, I'm resigned to that being a factor in all uf, but I'd rather it be on the low end.

Think of it as fantasy urban instead of urban fantasy. It takes the mundane activities we know and drops them into a fantastical setting instead of taking fantastical elements and dropping them in the world we know

I can’t believe it took me this long to start InCryptid, but I’m now six books in and I love them.

They’re dumb and compelling at the same time. I can’t explain it.

Why are there so many dance sequences and why do they work?

Every Price family member is like three traits in a trench coat, but somehow I love them?

The antagonist faction is somehow implacable and incompetent at the same time, but yet I’m always worried about them?

Everyone is hot af and horny af, but somehow it’s never skeevy?

Also the mice are the absolute best thing. I have no question here. They just own.

My one complaint is that the books are horribly straight, it gets a little better towards the end, but the only hetero relationship I was at all invested in was Sara and Artie.

I loving love the mice.

oh, I LIKE all the characters, I just have a very low tolerance for romance plots, which sinks to rockbottom with hetero romances. Also, it's annoying to fast forward sex scenes when I'm falling asleep to an audiobook.

Thanks for recommending the Fred the Vampire books, thread. There was no good option to follow listening to the Lock Tomb books, but these are a nice twist on standard urban fantasy and I dug how it was more a set of linked short stories. Really gave me a monster of the week vibe.

Weird thing was, audible had the third book as a graphic audio performance, (which as a Deathlands fan, I loved) but the fourth book is back to standard narration.

Hell yeah, I'm aroace so low hornt content is my jam.

Sexualoty and romance are normal expressions of human behavior and can be good character motivation or whatever, I just don't dig having extended or graphic descriptions, especially because it's way harder to skip those in audio book form than a real book lol

wheatpuppy posted:

I am not an audio book fan; I generally read faster than a narrator would speak so I find them slow and frustrating. But awhile back someone suggested thinking of them like a radio play which piqued my interest. So I asked what their favorite book was, and they named a romance novel that they loved because of the way the reader acted out the sex scenes with moans and whimpering. Um. No, thank you. If I wanted to hear someone enthusiastically describing sex acts in between their idea of sexy porno sounds, I would time travel back to my thin-walled college dorm.

So, I got into audiobooks with the Deathlands series, which is a really trashy post apoc setting. The Graphic Audio versions of those books were fully voice acted with sound effects and music and were very much a radio play, they were amazing. Except for the sex scenes which were cringe af. I'm so glad those were phased out as the series moved on lol.

Go listen to Moira Quirk's reading of Gideon the Ninth and thank me later.

Literally what I was going to suggest. If you've read any of Seannan McGuire's books, the audio versions of those are great as well. I'm going through the the Fred the Vampire Accountant books and those are good, although had I known graphic audio had done those as well, I'd have gone with them from the start.

I'm ace and the hornt levels in Incryptid were well within tolerance ranges for me. The hornt levels in October Daye are just outside though. Fred the Vampire Account has a tiny bit of eyeroll in the first book, but is very wholesome for the entire rest of the series.

I'm just finishing up a relisten of the October Daye books and one of the things I noticed, hearing those early books for the second time, is how much is actually set up for reveals down the road. None of the reveals have felt like bullshit to me. I also have a low tolerance for romance in general and cis/het romance specifically and the books don't feel very romance heavy, even the one specifically about her wedding.

Now, the Incryptid books, those had me fast forwarding through some poo poo.

Incryptid has a Tanooki (small raccoon dog) in a relationship with a waheela (giant loving werewolf that stands on 2 legs).

Speaking of Incryptid, the last few books have been pretty dark. Aftermarket Afterlife spoilers: Jane and Dominick both killed in rapid succession. Artie effectively dead as his brain is fundamentally broken and poorly reconstructed. Sarah spiraling towards a dark phoenix moment. The series seems like it’s heading for a conclusion soon and it probably won’t be a happy one.

I saw that was out and was planning on a relisten after I finish Murderbot.
