Even if France and Germany aren't being overestimated, Chile and Mexico definitely are underestimated. Both those european teams mentioned would have a hard time against them, and look at how Mexico dominated the whole first half against Netherlands right now. I get that they play mostly by letting the opposition possess the ball and counter-attacking, but still they barely had any chances. Eh, it's loving terrible for teams that aren't accustomed with this kind of climate to play, for sure, but doing stupid bullshit and chasing people everywhere is still playing badly, no matter the circumstances. I'm not exactly arguing who performs better under normal standard conditions for temperature and pressure or in theory, and other euro teams have done much better in similar heat at this Cup.Postorder Trollet89 posted:This. Yeah, that's where I'm coming from too. Colombia might have more individual skill, but it's not as bad of a stylistic matchup as Chile and Mexico was. Especially Chile, I've been telling everyone I knew that match would be hard as hell for Brazil and there was a good chance we'd get knocked out right there. It's gonna be an easier game, but that doesn't guarantee Brazil a win because we're playing like poo poo anyway.

Yeah, David Luiz and Thiago Silva have been the sole consistent bright spot this WC. Marcelo is no help on defense, and Daniel Alves might just be among the worst right fullback defensively I've seen at the professional level.

Thiago Silva remains a loving beast and that break where Fred lost the ball was one of the most composed pieces of defending I've ever seen. Stares down three attackers and just points where he wants everyone to run to without turning around or moving. Then blocks the player off, attack dies.

If anything, this Brazil defence shows just how good Barcelona and Real Madrid are at compensating defensively for Alves and Marcelo bombing forward. Things like putting a defensive player in the other fullback slot, dropping a defensive midfielder back into the centre of defence and pushing the centre backs out wide, playing a defensive winger who drops back when they overlap, stuff like that. Because Marcelo and Alves don't look like defensive liabilities for their club sides. But put them in a Brazil team where they both bomb forward and leave Luis, Silva, and Gustavo alone at the back, and suddenly the whole defence falls apart. I don't see where the criticism of Thiago Silva is coming from, to be honest. If it's of his leadership as captain then fine. But he's been by far their most solid defender, and if you were playing a David Luiz clone instead of him (and throw in a Paulinho clone for Gustavo while you're at it) Brazil would concede five goals every game.

Gustavo's absence against Colombia is critical, as he's been filling that defensive mid cum defender role that Biscuits does for Barca when Alves goes all attack (bit of a different style, but same idea). He would have helped against Hymen Rodrigues, that's for sure. I don't really pay attention to Bundesliga transfers, so can anyone explain to me why Gustavo left Bayern to go to Wolfsburg? Is this a case of Pep going full retard and not wanting a really great player that doesn't fit his platonic idea of a DM? I get that if Lahm is now a ball retaining DM he's wasn't going to get playing time, but still.

I was thinking about this earlier and I wanted to ask - do you think Scolari will replace Luis Gustavo with Hernanes while the former is suspended? I think that might actually work really well, he used to play the role in front of the defense at Lazio now and then and he was quite good at it, especially when he had a chance to distribute passes rather than just tackling.

I've read people saying that Scolari will take out Fred and use a 4 man midfield with Fernandinho, Paulinho, Oscar and Hernanes with Hulk and Neymar upfront. Or that it will be the same team as against Chile, only with David Luiz as a DM and Dante in his place in the back. Or that it will be Paulinho in L Gustavo's place, but Hernanes would come in for Hulk. Bottom line being no one has a clue.

During Copa America 2007 Brazil was really bad too but even then they got to the final were they demolished Argentina who was up until that point playing really well and destroying all it's rivals. It's a funny old game.
