Even if France and Germany aren't being overestimated, Chile and Mexico definitely are underestimated. Both those european teams mentioned would have a hard time against them, and look at how Mexico dominated the whole first half against Netherlands right now. I get that they play mostly by letting the opposition possess the ball and counter-attacking, but still they barely had any chances.

Obviously now that I said this Holland will demolish the CONCACAF team by 5x0.

This game is utterly irrelevant and has nothing to do with how good the teams are. It's entirely about how hot it is and how badly the dutch are coping, they're doing stupid bullshit and chasing people everywhere.

Eh, it's loving terrible for teams that aren't accustomed with this kind of climate to play, for sure, but doing stupid bullshit and chasing people everywhere is still playing badly, no matter the circumstances. I'm not exactly arguing who performs better under normal standard conditions for temperature and pressure or in theory, and other euro teams have done much better in similar heat at this Cup.

No they haven't, we haven't had a match this hot yet. They're doing stupid stuff because they can't think straight.

If the temperatures are this hot in the other games we may as well already rule out every remaining European team.

No, the high was 32/33 celsius. And lol at using a game where the Dutch outlasted and won the game late against Mexico as evidence of how the heat will destroy the Europeans.

Not to mention that from the quarters on out there are no more matches at 1pm, and outside of Brazil x Colombia, none of the other quarter final cities will be hotter than about 25, 26 celsius at 5pm.

Postorder Trollet89 posted:

Brazil are extremely unlikely to make it past the semifinals anyway because thats when they run into France or Germany. Colombia play very passionately and Brazils defense have not been the best. Colombia vs Brazil will be all about posession since both focus on attacking football. This brings me to Brazils biggest problem:

Brazils midfield is also poo poo and could not handle Chile or even Mexico, this does not bode well for them against Colombia much less Germany.

Not saying that Brazil will beat Colombia, but Colombia's midfield is nothing like Chile's. Brazil's midfield problem is against teams that press and force Brazil to have to pass it around, which made Chile and Mexico really bad match ups. Colombia's midfield is undoubtedly more talented than Chile's, but they also are not at all about pressing and marking. Brazil will have a ton more space against Colombia than Chile.

Yeah, that's where I'm coming from too. Colombia might have more individual skill, but it's not as bad of a stylistic matchup as Chile and Mexico was. Especially Chile, I've been telling everyone I knew that match would be hard as hell for Brazil and there was a good chance we'd get knocked out right there. It's gonna be an easier game, but that doesn't guarantee Brazil a win because we're playing like poo poo anyway.

Yeah, David Luiz and Thiago Silva have been the sole consistent bright spot this WC. Marcelo is no help on defense, and Daniel Alves might just be among the worst right fullback defensively I've seen at the professional level.

Thiago Silva remains a loving beast and that break where Fred lost the ball was one of the most composed pieces of defending I've ever seen. Stares down three attackers and just points where he wants everyone to run to without turning around or moving. Then blocks the player off, attack dies.

If anything, Luiz Gustavo is defending for basically a whole team.

On a side note, Thiago Silva has been a terrible captain so far and he is catching flack from pretty much everyone when it comes to that.

If anything, this Brazil defence shows just how good Barcelona and Real Madrid are at compensating defensively for Alves and Marcelo bombing forward. Things like putting a defensive player in the other fullback slot, dropping a defensive midfielder back into the centre of defence and pushing the centre backs out wide, playing a defensive winger who drops back when they overlap, stuff like that. Because Marcelo and Alves don't look like defensive liabilities for their club sides. But put them in a Brazil team where they both bomb forward and leave Luis, Silva, and Gustavo alone at the back, and suddenly the whole defence falls apart.

I don't see where the criticism of Thiago Silva is coming from, to be honest. If it's of his leadership as captain then fine. But he's been by far their most solid defender, and if you were playing a David Luiz clone instead of him (and throw in a Paulinho clone for Gustavo while you're at it) Brazil would concede five goals every game.

Good post.

Gustavo's absence against Colombia is critical, as he's been filling that defensive mid cum defender role that Biscuits does for Barca when Alves goes all attack (bit of a different style, but same idea). He would have helped against Hymen Rodrigues, that's for sure.

I don't really pay attention to Bundesliga transfers, so can anyone explain to me why Gustavo left Bayern to go to Wolfsburg? Is this a case of Pep going full retard and not wanting a really great player that doesn't fit his platonic idea of a DM? I get that if Lahm is now a ball retaining DM he's wasn't going to get playing time, but still.

Gustavo wanted playing time ahead of the World Cup and Javi Martinez was first choice in midfield until Pep decided that Lahm was going to be a DM.

Makes total sense. It makes me sad to think of how dynamic Martinez could have been at the swashbuckling Bayern but now he's going to be crammed onto the bench or into a Biscuits ball retainer/recycler.

I was thinking about this earlier and I wanted to ask - do you think Scolari will replace Luis Gustavo with Hernanes while the former is suspended? I think that might actually work really well, he used to play the role in front of the defense at Lazio now and then and he was quite good at it, especially when he had a chance to distribute passes rather than just tackling.

joepinetree
Apr 5, 2012
Brazilian media is on full "anything goes" speculation mode. I've read people saying that Scolari will take out Fred and use a 4 man midfield with Fernandinho, Paulinho, Oscar and Hernanes with Hulk and Neymar upfront. Or that it will be the same team as against Chile, only with David Luiz as a DM and Dante in his place in the back. Or that it will be Paulinho in L Gustavo's place, but Hernanes would come in for Hulk. Bottom line being no one has a clue.
