When you play the game for the first time, it will prompt you to pick a nation. Your choice is not final or anything, the other ones will unlock after a couple battles. We recommend Russia for beginners due to the sheer fun factor inherent to their biplanes.

Seriously just pick the planes you think look cool. This game is great in that 99% of the planes are viable (100% in arcade/sim battles). You can fly anything. You should fly everything.
:911: Their lack of cannons is compensated by tons of .50 caliber machine guns and lots of ammo. Has heavily armored and armed bombers with great payloads. Both the armor and fuel reserves on most planes are better than average. America has amazing diversity and the best premium tree featuring the most iconic planes from other nations (Zero/Spitfire/109).
Their tanks tend to be mobile and resilient. Their guns are weak till they get 76mm cannons, but even then too many of their tanks start with non-HE ammo, making their leveling an annoying proposition. They are so worth it though.

:godwin: For people who like energy fighting - fly high and go fast in swooping dive attacks then climb back to circle over their enemies like a hawk. Not for players that want to focus on turn fighting. The Germans like to put cannons in everything.
Their tanks tend to be slow and heavily armoured on the front, while carrying powerful guns.

:ussr: Jack of all trades, masters of none. Their best fighters are capable of both turn and energy fighting, but in order to get the most out of them, you have to know whether or not your enemy is a turn fighter or an energy fighter and play against their strengths/weaknesses. This is why Russia starts out as a good for beginners at early tiers but becomes one of the harder nations to play later in the game where other nations start to specialize in whatever niche they fall into. They also have plenty of nose-mounted cannons. Their bombers have really good payloads.
Their tanks are fast and tend to have sloped armour. Their weaponry suffers from really bad gun depression.

:britain: Britain has a lot of variety and plenty of wing-mounted cannons, but their early planes just love .303 machine guns. Spitfires are only beaten at turn fighting by Zeros and biplanes. Typhoons are energy fighters who can still turn fight decently. Then you have the Beaufighter with its four nose cannons and heavy armour. Their heavy bombers carry average bomb loadouts but terribly bad defensive weaponry. Like Russia, Britain is basically a "Jack of all trades" nation but their specific planes specialize much, much more in what they do.

:japan: Japanese planes tend to be incredibly agile when it comes to turn-fighting, but are slow and poorly armored. When you get hit, you die. Luckily, late-war Japanese planes tend to be both good at both turn and energy fighting. This tree also has the best bomber in the game for air-to-air kills, the G8N1.

Each is fun in their own way. It's best to play all of them a bit.

Arcade Battles:
A simplified cartoon mode for mindless fun. Allows air starts and multiple respawns. Teams are not divided up by nation so you can have a random group of planes each round. You have a lead indicator to help you land your shots. The flight models are relaxed to the point where you don't have to worry about stalling or overspeeding to the point that it will kill you. You can also reload in the air instead of having to fly back to your base and land like in the other modes. This is ideal for casual players and bombers that don't want to RTB (return to base) after dropping their bombs.
Tanks are faster, both acceleration and turret traversal-wise. You can use all the tanks currently slotted, and they all get a number of respawns each. You get a penetration indicator to make it the Ultimate Point and Click Adventure.
For now, it’s the only mode that is not Combined Arms except for future events.
This mode is great if you want to just fly around and shoot stuff and not worry about dying because you'll have plenty of extra lives. There are still match objectives for one of the teams to win but it isn't really worth trying to min/max because of how chaotic the arcade environment is.

Realistic Battles:
Originally 'Historical Battles' aka 'HBs'
Intended to be the stepping stone from arcade to sim battles, this has instead become the competitive sperg cyber-athlete mode because it is still mouse friendly. No respawns - rounds play out kind of like Counter-Strike in that there's an objective that can be done but really most rounds are won by the last man standing. This is what the aircraft aspect of War Thunder centers around.
Tanks are realistically slower, both acceleration and turret traversal-wise. You can use only one tank, but it gets respawns according to its category. No penetration indicator.
The way you play matters the most here. Each vehicle has its own strengths/weaknesses. Teamwork and communication are OP. Tactics play a bigger part in this than any other mode, which is what the majority of this thread will be arguing about. Pretty popular now that you can take both a plane and a tank in Combined Arms!
Play this if you want to win more often from skill and not chance.

Simulation Battles:
Originally 'Full-Real Battles' aka 'FRBs'
Joystick mode. This is for flight sim nerds. While you can use a joystick in the other modes and be at a disadvantage, using a mouse in Sim battles is hilariously unintuitive and will get you killed unless you're in a bomber that allows you to use tail gunners.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, this is just like realistic battles except you are limited to cockpit view only and nobody really takes it that seriously because more people are fighting their controls rather than each other. Despite the higher learning curve/skillcap, players tend to approach this mode casually and will just fly to the middle of the map and turn fight with each other at low altitude until someone crashes or gets shot down. Then occasionally you have that one cyber-ace that comes in and wrecks everyone's poo poo.
Tank SB is not as spergy as planes. You are limited to one tank (plus respawns) and your point of view is fixed to the commander’s hatch, there’s also no enemy identification tags and no penetration indicator. It’s great fun.
In Combined Arms, you can take both a plane and a tank!
Events:
Events are usually an existing battle but the planes are limited to whatever was supposedly used there historically. This usually means that one side has a blatant advantage... but it is often very fun and a great alternative to simply que-ing random battles. There have been some great events in the past, like 'FLOATS!' where it was just a bunch of giant flying boat planes crashing into each other and bombing stuff. A popular recurring event is 'Guardian Angels' with an air start where a bunch of P-51s try to defend a group of AI B-17s against German planes and this sometimes includes a team of Me 262 jets.

Events change daily and will be played as one of the game modes listed above but have their own separate window in game.

Teamwork and communication are the only things that are genuinely OP in this game. Especially considering Combined Arms is not that far away.

Do I need a joystick?
NO, this game is extremely mouse friendly. You can literally point to where you want to go and the plane will fly there. The only time you 'need' a joystick is for Simulation battles, which are essentially 'IL-2 mode' which is the closest this game gets to being a hardcore flight sim. Otherwise, it's a pretty fun Michael Bay simulator.

F2P?
This is a Free-to-Play game, NOT Pay-to-Win. There are premium options, but they only serve to skip the XP RP grinding.

This launcher sucks rear end.
We know. Try switching the launcher region to Russia. If that doesn't work, start another torrent upload process on the background. If that still doesn't work, try Peerblock? I dunno.

I want to give money to this Russian developer with a Japanese name
If you want to spend money on the game, you should buy this Steam pack.
You can also access the separate Warthunder.com store, and that may be better if you are a filthy Euro user. If you are not, just use Steam for all your Golden Eagles-related operations.

MMO?
Sorta. This game has a stupid RP (Research Points/Experience Points) grind system like most multiplayer games that have come out since that loving CoD4. You pick a vehicle and get tossed into a matchmaker that puts you round with similar planes.

Which nation/planes are the best?
Every nation owns. Seriously, there is no 'best' nation. They are all good at different things - for more info on that see below. USA is the most popular for obvious reasons. My advice is to just pick a plane you think looks cool and fly it.

I'm having difficulty with basic maneuvers
Use your keyboard for aileron/elevator input; it’s way more precise than mouse and won’t snap your view around. Bind it in Controls.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FLY THE PREVIOUS PLANE TO UNLOCK THE NEXT PLANE. JUST FLY YOUR FAVORITE loving PLANES. AND THEN BUY ALL THE PLANES.

Didn't see this answered earlier - there is a death on TK penalty in tanks that only seems to apply sometimes (it seems like the second TK triggers it). Essentially if you kill one friendly, no big deal, if you kill a second friendly it wrecks you and boots you from the game.

If you damage someone before they get kill-kicked, it will give you the kill credit, and if you damage someone on your team that already has a TK under their belt, then they kill you, the game kills and kicks them but gives the last hitter the credit, which is you, so you get a TK penalty for being TK'ed.

It's pretty dumb but it's War Thunder.

And what should one do to be remembered?
Planes

OH GOD HOW DO I PLANE

First of all, altitude is life. You can trade speed for altitude, and altitude for speed. CLIMB.

Just to repeat it:

quote:

Turnfighting is what happens if you are unable to BnZ.

BnZ is about using and retaining an advantage(altitude, energy) over your opponents. You want to do this.

- Airplane fighting styles are divided along two broad categories: turn fighting and energy fighting.

Turn fighting means using your maneuverability to overpower your enemy at close distances, like turning inside their own turn radius to put rounds on them before they can do the same. The problem with turn fighting is that you tend to bleed energy fast, and you will be a sitting duck against enemy planes that are not turn fighting with you. Some great examples of turn fighters are the Spitfire and the Zero.

Energy fighting implies you either use your energy retention to either maneuver around an enemy, forcing them to lose their enegy in an attempt to shake you off; or you use “boom and zoom” tactics, where you strike them from above (the boom) before running past at high speed, and climbing back again (the zoom). The Thunderbolt and the Bf109 are some examples of energy fighters.
Every plane can be an energy fighter, but not everyone can be a turn fighter. In fact, you should try to energy fight before turn fighting if you can, even with a turn fighter. Using throttle and flaps properly is the difference between videogame life and death when it comes to planes.

Fighting

Aim for the pilot. It’s the only squishy bit in the plane. Failing that, you can always hit a wing root/engine.

Try to hit the bomber’s engines, or the wing roots. Never tail a bomber; like 70% of its defensive weaponry can hit you there.

Pat yourself on the back if you see the elevator fly away, you just made life a literal hell for the poor bastard.

Remember, you can only kill two neo-nazis/bronies/goons in your team before getting kicked out of the match. You may be temporarily banned if you kill more than seven a week! Spread those kills out for maximum enjoyment.

Remember, getting a kill in this game is just like opening a file.

Upgrades and Ammo

They don’t matter when you fly planes. The differences are incredibly small, and if you ever think that you lost because the other guy had more upgrades, we will point and laugh.

I mean, sure, you want AP for machine guns and HE for cannons, but you can murder planes just fine with practice rounds as long as you have good aim. Sure, it might take a couple more seconds if you aren’t hitting the pilot, but that just means you should aim better.
For ground attack, Ground Target belts are important. For big caliber cannons against planes, you should avoid AP rounds most of the time because they will go straight through the fuselage.

Bombs and rockets will impact your plane’s performance, and they will do so even after you release them due to the pylons/launchers.

Just to make a compromise regarding :spergin:, let’s just say that AP is more useful for machine guns than cannons, Incendiary are always funny against planes and HE and AI/IAI are basically the same while Ball/Practice are technically the worst rounds in the game. But they are still bullets.

Settings

Convergence is the point where your bullets cross each other. 400-500 should be fine for Arcade/Realistic, but lower is better for Simulator.

Vertical tolerance makes the lead indicator take into account the vertical axis when calculating where you should shoot. We think.

Carry at least 30 minutes of fuel in Realistic. Try to always carry the minimum amount available for Arcade.

Be really, really obscene with your decals. Or just paint your vehicle bright pink. That works too.

Tanks

0. Learn to Aim

Your shells will drop over distance because physics. This might not be immediately obvious because shooting or being shot at results in clouds of smoke and dirt everywhere that you can't see through or turn off so it's hard to see where your shots are landing. Some guns shoot straighter than others. If you play Arcade Battles, there is an indicator that tells you exactly where your shot will land. Aside from that it's a matter of practice.

1. Flank

Shoot tanks from the sides or rear when possible
Tanks usually have the thickest armour at the front, then sides, then the thinnest at the rear.

2. Shoot the flat bits

Your gun is most effective if you're hitting armour straight on because trigonometry. The more extreme the angle you hit the armour at, the less effective the shot will be. At very shallow angles the shot will just bounce off harmlessly. Some tanks (mostly Russian) have sloped armour that can be tough to crack. Shoot the parts that are the least sloped relative to your view.

3. Angle your tank
Now that you know about point 2., you can apply the concept defensively. Angle your hull to make your armour more effective against incoming fire. How much to angle depends on the tank, but a good ballpark is 20-30 degrees. If you angle too much you will expose your weaker sides.

4. Ammunition

There are two main types of tank rounds: armor piercing (AP) and high explosive (HE). Under these two distinctions, there are a few modifiers (that are tacked together to make a single string of letters) that make notable differences in performance.

• Let's tackle AP first since penetrating armored boxes is the primary way of killing Tankmans, the modifiers:
  • None (No modifier): straight AP to poke cannon-caliber holes in their tank; generally requires direct crew/module hits, but can cause decent interior fragmentation (hurts crew and soft modules).
  • -C (Capped): has a soft tip (:flaccid:) that increases potency against angled (relative to impact) armor.
  • -BC (Ballistic Cap): ignore this modifier, compare the pen numbersvs. range for shells (in-game, it gives pen at 10m, 100m, 500m, 1000m, 2000m).
  • -HE (High Explosive): penetrates then explodes, this should be your go-to round type against all targets you can penetrate with it.
  • -CR/HVAP (Composite Rigid/High-Velocity AP): sub-caliber (smaller than barrel) inert projectile with high penetration at short ranges, use only if you can't pen otherwise since it causes little internal damage; generally best suited to eliminate their crewmembers since it's bad at making ammo go boom and starting fires.
  • Shrapnel (Shrapnel): breaks the naming scheme (and technically an anti-infantry weapon), but is the tank-shell equivalent of a shotgun (except there's a time delay before exploding the metallic "pellets" out of the shell) to purée tank crews and break internals. They're limited to early :ussr: and are incredibly powerful (almost always one-shot kills) if you can penetrate the target, but their pen sucks.

• Moving onto HE which is generally for soft targets, unless you supersize it:
  • None (No modifier): straight HE that explodes on contact, for soft targets unless 122mm caliber or larger (:ussr: TDs, generally). Soviet TDs using it generally one-shot upon hitting (occasionally failing on frontal shots, but usually impairing/wrecking their ability to fight back [breaking their gun, turret drives, tracks, suspension, etc.]).
  • -AT (Anti-Tank): uses the 'HE' component as a chemical penetrator (no drop off from range), causing a sub-caliber molten metal jet to blast through their armor. Most prominent use: long range (1000~1500m+) fighting due to no loss in pen. Marginally more effective killing power than APCR (much better at making ammo go boom or starting fires, but still a minimal interior effect otherwise). Noteworthy: commonly the go-to ammo type for German short-75mm's (tier I) since their AP pen sucks hard.

That covers most of it (use APHE or variants thereof whenever possible), but there are a few other considerations:
  • Shell mass: if the round type is the same, more massive will do more damage upon penetrating.
  • Muzzle velocity: higher the better (flatter trajectory, more pen at distance) generally (lower velocity lets you arc them over hills/hit top armor at range).
  • If your tank has plenty of ammo (many do), it's good to have some "specialty" rounds on hand (some APCR for heavies your APHE can't pen easy, some HEAT for long range engagements).

If you want to know a bit more (more formal definition of what each is) about the various types click here. If you want to know :spergin: more click here.

Ammo tl;dr: APHE variants (APHEBC is pretty common, but as long as you see APHE in the string you're good to go) > HEAT > APCR.

5. Positioning
Tanks is basically about being in a better spot than the guy you're shooting at. See point 1. If your front is facing an enemy's side or rear, you basically win. I almost always avoid the middle of the map because it just means you can be shot from more directions at once. Go on the edges of the map and get side shots on fools who went down the middle.

Use cover - rocks, bunkers, your teammates, etc. A common tactic is to go "hull down". This means hiding your hull behind hard cover and exposing just your turret. This makes you a smaller target.

Cresting a hill can be dangerous because most tanks cannot aim their guns downward enough to hit targets.

If you're playing in Simulator Battles mode, then you have to spot tanks with your own eyes. Use camouflage and concealment. Avoid silhouetting your tank by having trees, bushes, or terrain behind you to make your tank outline less conspicuous.

6. Aim for weakpoints
This is really on a tank-by-tank basis. Ask the thread.
Normally, there's a driver slit in the front of the tank that susceptible to penetration. Ammo tends to be stored on the middle of the tank, in the space between the turret and the track. It's actual location depends on the tank though.

7. Upgrade
Prioritize Parts (so you can repair more than just your tracks) and FPE (fire extinguisher), then ammo and artillery.

My gun won't shoot/I can't move/my turret won't rotate/etc.

Your tank is damaged or your crew injured. If your crew is injured, they need several seconds to recover, and there is a timer where the chat is. If your tank is damaged, you'll get a prompt to repair your tank if you have researched "Parts" (you did that, didn't you?). Repairing will repair everything at once. Sometimes this takes a really loving long time. The repair timer is shown in the chat window as well. If it takes more than like, 3 minutes, you might as well just give up and respawn because the match will be over by the time you do.

:siren: Go to Controls -> Basic(it's the first tab anyway) -> Scroll down to the bottom and bind a key to 'Show the status of the vehicle modules'

You can now enable like this helpful feature:

Crews

As you play the game, you'll acquire crew points to improve stuff like the time it takes for your weapons to reload, how much control you lose under G-forces or how efficient your gunner is at finding the right angle to shoot at a target.

Tank and plane crews are separate, but they share an EXP pool. Every tab inside the crew menu affects a different part -

[Planes]

  • Pilot
    - Keen Vision: Affects the distance at which you can spot planes in the direction where your camera is looking.
    - Awareness: Affects the distance at which you can spot planes in the direction where your camera isn't looking.
    - G-Tolerance: It affects how much control of the plane you'll lose in a high or low G maneuver. It also allows your pilot to pull more Gs before getting knocked out.
    - Stamina: As you fly, your pilot gets tired and handling of the plane suffers. This stat diminishes that effect.
    - Vitality: It allows your pilot to survive hits to the cockpit. With no vitality, even a stray .303 can kill him. It will not make you invulnerable to bullets, and a single AP cannon round can still kill you.

  • Gunners
    - Experienced Gunners: If you don't have as many experienced gunners as gunners you have on a plane, then your skills will get reduced proportionally. So if you only have one gunner in a 4-gunner crew, your gunner skills will be at 1/4 of their efficiency.
    - Fire Accuracy: Affects your gunner's accuracy when you are not manually controlling them.
    - Fire Precision: Affects your gunner's spread when you are not manually controlling them.
    - G-Tolerance: Same as with pilots, but also allows the AI to start shooting during high G turns, and recover faster from them.
    - Stamina: Same as with pilots.
    - Vitality: Same as with pilots.

  • Ground Service
    - Repair Speed: Determines how much time till your plane gets repaired while on a runway. Also diminishes free repair times.
    - Repair Rank: If your Repair Rank isn't equal to or above the rank of the equipped plane, then the Repair Speed bonus won't apply to it.
    - Reload Speed: Reduces the time it takes for your ammunition and ordnance to get replenished, both in the air (Arcade) and on a runway.
    - Weapon Maintenance: Increases the amount of time in which you can continuously shoot your weapons before they jam.

You should prioritize the Pilot tab + Weapon Maintenance for Historical, and both the Pilot skills and Weapon Maintenance/Reload Speed for Arcade.

[Tanks]

All members of the crew have Keen Vision, Vitality and Field Repair. They all work the same as they do with planes, except that Keen Vision only affects the vision slits assigned to a crew member, and Field Repair is not linked to a Repair Rank.

If a tank crew member gets knocked out, someone else will move into their spot (as long as the Driver or Gunner got knocked out), but that will decrease the overall performance of the tank crew.

  • Driver
    - Tank Driving

  • Gunner
    - Targeting: It allows your gunner to move the gun vertically and horizontally at the same time while aiming. An unexperienced gunner will first turn the turret and then fix the angle of fire.
    - Rangefinding: Affects long range accuracy.

  • Loader
    - Weapon Reloading: Affects your reload speed.

  • Commander
    - Leadership: Gives a skill bonus to other crew members.
    - Machine Gunnery: Affects the accuracy of the commander's machine gun.

  • Radio Operator Gunner
    - Bow Machine Gun Fire: Affects the accuracy of the bow machine gun.
    - Bow Machine Gun Reloading: Affects the reload speed of the bow machine gun.
    - Radio Communication: Affects the rate of target assignment to allies via radio.

You can also pay for Qualifications - both Expert (Lions) and Ace (Eagles). They give fixed bonuses to certain skills (For planes, Keen Vision/Awareness/Weapon Reload/Repair Speed/Gunner Accuracy and Precision; for Tanks, Field Repair and all individual, non-shared Crew Skills). Your crew needs to be at a certain level to use it; just improve the cheapeast skills to boost it so you can purchase Expert Qualification.

Your crew can be qualified in every single vehicle available in the game.

Reserved for LAME smugposting.

We got some gifs in the OP made by confirmed LAMErs so I would like to describe them here.

This is from the Duels event, where you played 4v4 matches with RB flight models, getting close air starts. In this particular gif 4 goons in A5M2s deal with a bomber behemoth the only way that plane can. These four LAME members were Muhlump, Heliosicle, myself and Russian Bias.

In SB you fly using a joystick, cockpits only, to determine who is a true cyber ace. However some shitlers just take bombers, fly them level without any obscuring cockpits and mouse aim their turrets. This is me smoking one of them.

Gif by LAMEr Heliosicle

The flying spaghetti monster uses its skul gun to kill a cobra.

All the following gifs were created by me.

Firstly we got my imgur album of War Thunder gifs. Warning! This album is big, but individually the gifs are less than 5MB each.

I love this gif. (Bigger, better)

Critical miss during Guardian Angels.

Sometimes they just give it to you so easily.

Here are some gifs fit enough for imgur.
Cannon Hayabusa - Gif from my exclusive preview of the new Hayabusa with two 20mm cannons. (Don't bother me about how to get the plane.)
Never head on - Komet figured it would head on a Meteor with its slow cannons.
Pro teamkill - During the Duels event I'm flying my Ta-152 and misjudged the drop on my cannons. Errorless Eriks D-13 pays the price.
SB trash - Taking out the SB trash. This is the outside view of the second gif in this post.
Get faster - F-80 got slower, pays for it.
Bad approach - Never just approach B-17s from behind, hoping you kill the pilot of three of them without landing.
Goon boost - Rare tank gif. Goons helping each other to give a B-17 crew what they had coming.
Bloop - Simple bloop gif.
Jazz - Stupid gimmick kill.
Sturdy B-17 - It is said that the B-17s are brokenly sturdy.
Staller - A teammate set up a Bearcat to stall and the Yak-15 comes in. Slower version
P80 goes boom - Simple detonation gif.

These are the big, beutiful gifs over at gfycat(or imgur, since they take big ones now). Fortunately they get compressed for your viewing pleasure!
Ki-200 vs P-80A - Sushi kills a Shooting Star in a cool way.
Rockets - Korea is finally the staging ground for Germany vs Japan matches. Sadly only tier 5 is invited. Before the Komet was bumped to a different battle rating.
Superplane - First match in the Ki-84 super planes after they got fixed. Shooting Star surprises me from behind and I have to barrel roll it.
Wing slap - FartCar97 got a Zero on his rear end but Gay Yoga has no ammo to save him with.
B-17 head on - How to shoot B-17s the best. Rare exception to the rule of Never Head On.
Longshot - This doesn't look to be very long but for the slow German 30mm it is. The target was also going quite fast with a small rear profile.
Never head on - Mustang can't handle the K-4 not flying straight at him. I didn't want to head on but then he gave me a good shot.
Scared 109 - 109 get scared to death while going too fast for what he's pulling. I fire my machine guns, barely getting any, hits and he does this.
Shooting Star yaked up - Shooting Stars are often run-away artist incapable of doing anything else. This one doesn't get away. Trying out 60 fps gif making for the first time.
Yak-15 tale - A day in the life of an Yak-15.
Interception - Zero does an high speed interception of a Kingcobra.
Airbrakes - My first gif of War Thunder. This was back when you got to fight Sabres in the Meteor F3 all the time. The only thing you had going for you was the fact that your airbrakes were extremely powerful.
Banzai - I've had to deal with whole teams myself in my D3A and when you come up against Catalinas, a big bomber with actual turrets, one dinky .30 machine gun just wont cut it. You have to get creative.
Hide and seek - A Sabre tried to get away by hiding in a cloud. It didn't go so well.
Pull up - Classic gif! A MiG-15 is dancing with two Sabres as my Panther rudely interrupts. Suicide ensues.
Ruhr - Goon sync drop - This is from back when goons sync dropped Mustangs into Ruhr, to stomp Komets. The lesser version of this gif featured in an album of the event.
Saving Muhlump - During the Shturmovik event I saved Muhlump from a 109 in my Yak-3. I got a pilot snipe just tapping the trigger, using hilariously little ammo.
2bears1sushi - How will a common Ki-200 down on his luck survive a mauling from two Bearcats? Click this gif to find out.
Solo - Cool planes don't look at explosions. This is the best of the bunch of gifs from the one game where I soloed the whole enemy team. I killed 5 Bearcats and a B-17 without landing.
30mm test - This is a better version of that K-4 gif I like so much. Supposedly the German 30mm sparks a lot so in this gif I'm testing its hit detection.
Japan OP, ban this sick filth - Normally you wouldn't get into Korea fighting the big boy jets in your Ki-200s, but this time we did. We also dragged two Ki-84 with us, who both got to kill a MiG-15 each. Bonus: landing.
Using an elevator - Zero uses its elevator as a Mustang attacks. How not to Mustang. Thumbnail version
MiG-9 - Supposedly the MiG-9 is good now. Heliosicle proves this by beating up lower tier prop planes.
Yak-15 is cool - It is.
Fagot says "Hi" - MiG-15 says hello to a Panther.
SB is hard - Flying with a joystick is hard. Flying a Zero is easy when all you have to do is to pull back on the stick until you are on someone.
gently caress you, Get out, gently caress you too, gently caress jets - The J7W is not a very good plane, and its matchmaking is awful. These are gifs of a game where i make the best out of the situation.
(Never) Head On: the sequel - It's just the same drat gif again, with different planes 2/5*.

Ground forces related gif I made for another game.

The laments of the Focke-Wulves

I've... seen things I couldn't believe.
WW2 jets on fire off the shoulder of B-17s.
I've watched Shooting Stars glitter in the skies near the Brandenburg Gate.
All those moments... will repeat again and again, like my... tears in chat.
Time to dive...

This last gif is edited down from a longer scene in the movie Soldier of Orange

This is really on a tank-by-tank basis. Ask the thread.

Note that 99% of the time the thread will just say "google for schematics".

Also drat when did the He112 V-5 get good? Flying RB helps those piddly 7.62s to actually do anything, but just to fly it feels a lot more co-operative, even in AB I remember having the worst elevator and aileron response. (It is also possible that low tier CARB pubbies are even worse than those in plane-only RB)

One tip for anyone starting out - the best planes in the early game are the Mig3's - don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

When in doubt just shoot more. When your bullets don't do any damage l2aim and shoot more.

It really isn't hard. Aim for machine guns. Aim for driver slits. Just aim for anything that isn't straight up armor or useless addon on a tank.

Hopefully CA sim battles sort themselves out after today but right now they are loving retarded. When 75% of your team spawns in planes there's nothing to stop a squad on the other team from driving straight to the spawn points and just camping them for the entire match.

Arcade is a perfectly normal, perfectly natural lifestyle choice. It's also really fun. Play arcade if you're into things like:

- fast queue times
- lead indicators
- plane respawns
- diving into a furball from 7000m
- havin a good time and generally being chill
- birds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI1Xr2konao
- running into people / having people run into you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd3Zmd1vcRE

so yeah, come have fun in arcade mode! They'll give us combined arms... eventually! Right? RIGHT?

Think Arcade will be getting CA next week based on the type of language they used, and I wouldn't be surprised if its with the Spawn Points system. Completely stupid if they do use the Points system for Arcade though, but this is Gaijin.

I'm still upset it wasn't "Objectively Better Than World of Warplanes", just because that can of worms would be fun to open.

shoot men, receive credits
I should post here, but I have nothing to contribute atm so it's just a shitpost... I'm a bad plane/tank man.

Also maybe add the info in the OP that the german PzGr 39 actually has a HE filler, cause the ingame info still is missing that part and it's kind of vital as otherwise the PzGr 40 looks more like an upgrade, which it isn't.

I just played my first Combined Arms battle.

It uses Realistic's driving/flight models, but uses Arcade mode setups, so planes start in action and encounters happen within the first 30 seconds. And you have respawns (1 plane life, 1-3 tank lives). This is the best playmode and if they ever change it then I will track down whoever is responsible and devour their soul.

What I'm saying is 'Everyone play Tanks Realistic right now, it's what War Thunder should have always been'.

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.
(Will be cleaned up and arranged over time, keyword PlayStation 4)

PS4 Version Information: << CROSS-PLATFORM PLAY IS IN! >>
- Been on PAL PSN networks since November 29th 2013, began as version 1.36.36.2 and was fine, eventually received a 1.37 patch that ruined the framerate and on June3/5 US/EU respectively it was brought up to 1.41 and cross-platform play. Slowly improving patch by patch.
- To be able to log on and play on PC with your PS4 WT account (as of 2015 created ones), enter your profile in PS4 WT and press L3 for email bind, enter the email you desire there and done. Just enter it correctly, and a working email at that.

Control methods: << YOU NEED A MOUSE FOR THE UI TO NOT SUCK >>
All control methods are now configurable freely, target aiming assistance is still in the game by pressing L2 on the DS4 (PS4 ONLY FEATURE), this can be combined with using the mouse for more precise aim than what the DS4 alone can provide. It's a preferable method but you can get 100% PC controls, even joystick support on the PS4. PS4 Camera headtracking works but is iffy, best combined with a reset-camera button on whatever other inputs you're using.

PS4 Squads?
None, you can join, talk, friend PC players and join squads!

<< PostFX SETTINGS FOR IMPROVED FRAMERATES >>
For some reason this improves things, from TwinChicken69 on the WarThunder forums: "heres my setting Vignette:4 bars TPS:1bar gunner view, bomber view, cockpit sharpness is zero.now color correction is default, lensflare:disabled, tone mapping polynom,A:0.2 B:0.28 C:0.357 D:0.953 E:0.103 F:0.967 White:3.369 my in game gamma correction is 9 bars"

First one out of the Ranger gets a prize!
You may want to mention that the lines on a tank's site are correct and can be used to both find the range to target and to know where your round will fall.

If you're at all competent in a fighter, it's like kicking puppies in RB CA. Stukas, Il-2s, and big juicy bombers galore. Just watch out for your own team and don't get too close to the tanks area until the AAA gets reduced a bit.

ukle

Was mentioned on the previous page but you can 'game' the new MM (Match maker).

Just make sure all your vehicles are at least 1.0 BR below your top one and you will be always put in matches where your top vehicle will be one of the highest BR in the game. Less important for planes, but can mean you wont face Tigers / Panthers in some Russian tanks.

E.g. An example playing my T34-57 which I have talismaned, using this method keeps facing me against BR 3 and below tanks. Last match highest tank on the enemy team was a Pz3L, while most of my team was T50's.
