Looks like the 10.10 developer preview is compatible with machines as old as the 2007 iMac and 2008 MBP. That's 6-7 year old hardware

He's probably better off starting with something like python like most people.

I totally forgot I was waiting for Apple to support raw image capture in camera.app and the camera API to follow suit on MS/Nokia and Google. Too bad its not in iOS 8.
