There's no need to rush to be an adult.

Anime goons, Manga goons, generally weird goons looking to be weird, It's time for A-Kon 25.

Main page with links, guest speakers and updates.

Schedules and times for the nerdfest.

A-Kon, the longest running and current 6th largest anime convention in the U.S., takes place the first weekend of June in Dallas, Texas. This year the convention returns to the Hilton Anatole Hotel, off Highway 35E North/South.

The convention has been bringing in larger crowds each year, with 2012 bringing in around 22,000 visitors in total.

I'm hoping to use this thread as a link-up page for goons going to the convention, those interested in the panels and presentations, and just general convention interests that anyone may have.

Guest Speakers

The guest list for this A-Kon is pretty extensive, but a short list:

Michael Sinterniklaas - Dave Venture
Kyle Herbert - Gohan
Amy Howard Wilson - The original Nova, from Star Blazers
J. Michael Tatum - Sky Lord Eneru, Scar
M. Alice LeGrow - Artist of Bizenghast
Krazy Krow - Spinnerette
Ken Steacy - Comic Artist/Publishing legend
Mookie - Because this dead horse still needs beating

Notable events

Nerdcore Comedy is hosting a show on Friday night
The Dork Forest is also hosting a show Friday Night, before the Nerdcore Comedy show.
There's an ongoing contest to get the Guiness World Record for number of video game character costumes in one place. A nerd world record!
Scavenger hunt throughout the convention, with 3-4 person teams.
And a bunch of the usual panels and guest speaking arrangements.

The thread

This thread is about anything for the convention: Photos, merch requests, planning and panelists, whatever the goons going there are feeling they will be doing. Carpooling and chow arrangements are also cool for planning here, since parking looks like it's going to be a pain.

Parking at the Anatole sucks, there's only one free lot and it usually fills up pretty drat quickly.

I've been waffling over whether or not I want to go this year, but recently I've become more and more disinterested in large overcrowded cons. Plus the fact that I'd be going alone kinda sucks too.

This is going to be my second one, and my first really 'large' one. I've been to Kami-Con in Birmingham, and I enjoyed that one, so hopefully I have some of that same experience.

But, yeah, there's gonna have to be some scheduling going on for this to work out, because there is a literal crapton of stuff to go through.

Also, need a carpool?

I'll see you there. I will be attending dressed as Kiryuin Satsuki.

Me and the wife are going as a Beowulf/Valentine combo from Skullgirls, so we'll be easy to spot. Also, wife question asked: Normal outfit or battle outfit?

I'll be there, but I'm going with friends.

So you know, there will be another goon there, but I won't announce myself or seek you out and if you somehow discover me I'll deny it.

Yeah, and he's got two panels so he can shill both Dominic Deegan and Starpower. Glad I'm not the only one who hates this.

Sadly, Anime Hell got cancelled because someone didn't turn in the application in time.

I intend on attending the panel, just to make Dominic Doogan jokes and go 'bluh wuh bluh huhhhhh' noises.

Young Freud posted:

Also, I need to shill this, but there's going to be an A-Kon after-party Sunday at the Lizard Lounge in Deep Ellum. If the Anatole is too expensive to get drunk at, and it is, at least the Lounge is going to be there.

Sounds like it might be fun.

Also, for parking, I am honestly thinking about dropping the extra :10bux: for valet, because gently caress everything about crossing that highway. But that's dependent if I can get a parking spot across the street on Valdina.

Either way, yeah, it's gonna be a pain.

Good luck with that. Terraciano gives very little openings in his Memorable Heroes & Villains panel. The whole thing is pretty much canned frtom a script he's memorized for nearly ten years at this point, one you can watch multiple times on Youtube.

I still can't believe he's doing a memorable heroes and villains panel. The only person I remember from DD is the main character and his love interest, and all the villains are simply plain sorts of 'I hate you, I must kill you' or 'rargh argh destroy/rule everything' characters. They're as shallow as a puddle.

Honestly, I remember more about the stupid cat than I do about the whole last villain thing.

Where are you seeing mookie is going, the A-Kon website doesn't list him and his website only lists last years A-kon

On the schedule, He's supposed to be at Peacock Terrace at 7:45 on Friday, doing his 'Unique Heroes and Memorable Villains' panel.

Eh, if they do something else, then it just means that block of time is free.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm going to the panel on writing webcomics around that time. I don't know what Amya or Paradoxicals is, though.

Welp, time to plan up some stuff and leave early tomorrow morning. I'll be attending plainclothes tomorrow for some photos, then playing up the cos for Saturday. I'll see you goons there!

Made it the last two years but scheduling conflicts and a lack friends means I'll be unable to attend this year. Be sure to take pictures or even provide updates from the con floor!

It's also clear that he doesn't follow his advice if you're familiar with his work. Fortunately for him, most people at A-Kon usually don't.

That's how I view it. I can either make a lovely attempt to troll and potentially get kicked out of the Kon and lose $60 or I can do something else worthwhile.

Also, I thought his "Unique Heroes" panel was on Saturday evening, but I guess. It'll be interesting if he shows to that, since he's never made any of his Friday evening webcomic panels in the past.

Yeah, true. He's also doing a 'SPAAAACE' panel, so I might go to that one because I like sci-fi and I want to see how badly he is screwing it up.

Also, I have a photographer friend who might be showing up for the world record attempt. I hope to get some good shots for practice, since my job usually keeps me doing news stuff and I don't get a lot of chances to do the experimental, artsy stuff.

Journal from ground zero: 1345 Friday.

I was the guy in the pre-reg line with the big camera, geeking out at the various cosplays and the signatures on the line tape. Also, the tape itself was like some sort of weird nerd graffiti, with tumblr links, hookup phone numbers and references everywhere. It was pretty fun, despite a 100 minute wait just to make it to the table.

Got a great shot of some cosplayers out in the main lobvy, spent 20 bucks on lunch, got some free pocky and headed to the panels. Had to make a stop by the anime military association for a story. Yes, it is a real thing.

In a cosplay class right now, hoping to hit merch later. Ill post a photo dump at the end of the day. Still no stairs in houses spotted.

Friday battle damage report:

Got to sit in on the M. Alice Legrow panel about what editors want, and it ended up being less about editors and more about jackassess who find themselves unable to work because they can't get over themselves. Got a signature, too, which was awesome.

Made 'Bluugh Whugh hugh' noises at Mookie at his bench. He did not seem to care for it much.

While I was in the Merch area I got a few more signatures, including Krazy Krow of Spinnerette and Brian Foulke of Flipside. Got a miniature webby plush out of it. Also got the 'Two Cats' webcomic team to draw me a sketch, which was even more awesome since it was free.

Saw a lot of crazy cosplays, though I only confirmed one goon (Legrow) and spotted two Kiryuin Satsuki, though none in Junketsu form. Got to practice with some lighting, slow shutter photography, and photo editing as well.

Full photo set here.

See you tomorrow~!

K, finally made it here. Had to DART into Market Center. I'm likely going to spend the money I set aside for registration on getting drunk in the hotel bar (for how long that'll last).

At least you arent stuck in the cosplay cantonement area for this record attempt. Ive missed panels ive been looking forward to because we cant leave while the record attempt is counted.

Welp, that looks like that was it for this year. Great stuff, though. I won 20 bucks from LittleKuriboh, got counted in a record attempt, and got a llama drawing. I spent too much, regretted too little and did things that should never be spoken of.

Some advice for myself: next year, make the thread at least a month out for better cooperation, and work on my posts.

See you all next year, i guess. I dunno.

I'm really hoping the parking issues and the whole sealing off Artist Alley get fixed or something. That was more than annoying.

Anyway, JABC, I'd really suggest starting a thread for AnimeFest coming in August 15-18. It's being held at the Sheraton Downtown, which is where A-Kon was held for almost ten years, and they seemed to really have it together, even better than A-Kon. Also, since the hotel doesn't control everything, parking is $5/day, there's plenty of food choices with Plaza of Americas and Deep Ellum within walking distance, and the site is easily accessible by DART since Arts District stop is right next to the hotel.

Im actually in the Austin/killeen area, and they are having Geekfest in August, which we are going to. Though for Dallas Goons, AnimeFest would be a good one. If you think it`ll get traction, then post it up in here or in goonmeets.

I may do this again for another convention, but let me sleep on the idea. Just got done driving, so i need to get back and post up links for Saturday and Sunday.

From personal experience, it really does seem like the earlier you make a post about a convention, and the more effort you put into it, the more Goons actually seem interested in attending (more likely, of course, they are just not bothering to respond to low-effort posts [yours was a fine post but yeah the timing was rough]).

Yeah, it was kind of rushed. Well, we have some conventions coming up in August, I think one in Killeen and one in Austin, so I may post up about those.

Also, just to check, would the thread be opposed to some sort of convention megathread? Where we could post up pics for those who couldn't make it, talk about panels and just be nerds in general?

If there is interest, I think I know a couple of websites with convention schedules and stuff. I could post up some soon-time meets, get interest going, make it a proper megathread.

Quarex posted:

Oh and I was there and suddenly thought "wait, I bet there was a thread" only after the fact. I do not live in Dallas nor do I imagine I will ever be here again and I have not actually watched anime intentionally since the 1990s, all of which were all the more reasons to attend!

I hope to attend again, but I most likely will be going to whatever local thing I can get to, honestly. And, hey, there's nothing wrong with that.

Did you go as anything, or did you just sit at the lounge, get drunk, and wonder what all the furries were doing there?
