I'm looking for brake rotors that don't suck, won't rust like a motherfucker, and won't cost me a hundred bucks a rotor. Any of you fine gentlemen have any suggestions? Are Raybestos worth a drat anymore? For a 2000 camaro by the way.

Fucknag posted:Well, if you don't want rust, you're SOL with any rotors made of iron, aka the vast majority of them. You could get ceramic rotors; those definitely won't be a hundred bucks each. No issues. These are for a brand new braking system. Centric has some rotors with painted hats that may stay nice looking for at least a little while. I already have a set of their pads, so hopefully they'll play nicely together. I just want to hear if anyone here has had experience with a particular brand that was just utter crap.

Complete wild-rear end guess as to whether I'll be able to learn to do it or not, but I've wanted to learn for a long time. From what I've seen of your paint skills, I figured you already had that in your repertoire. Good luck!

Thelonious posted:I've contemplated a 5.3 truck motor with an overdrive but its beyond my skill level. Besides, it's a poverty spec sedan. Manual steering and drums. Gotta learn somewhere, man. Start with power steering. New steering gear and pitman arm, p/s pump and hoses, maybe a new pulley or 2. Then move to the brakes. I'm sure there's tons of info available on swapping to either power discs or at least power disc/drum. Once that's done, start looking into engine swaps. New engines into old cars is nothing new at all. However, 327s are bad rear end. I've got a '71 Nova sedan that I'm in the process of swapping the brakes on and have already swapped the steering gear. I'm definitely going 6-speed, but I don't know if I want to go Gen3/Gen4 small-block in front of it. :4doors4lyfe:

trouser chili posted:Pulling my hair out here. I can't find a pitman arm for a 1976 Chevy Nova, base six cylinder. The closest I got was RareParts part number RP20872. According to O'Reilly auto, this part fits a shitload of different year Pontiac Firebirds and Chevy Camaros as well as the 1976 Chevy Nova. They also want $220 for it. gently caress that. According to Amazon, it's actually for manual steering only. My Nova is power steering. Are pitman arms kinda universal or what? Perhaps I'm overthinking this. Pitman arms aren't really universal, unfortunately. Get the wrong length and your steering geometry is all hosed up. Also, that arm is apparently made of unobtanium...

trouser chili posted:Well gently caress. Funny story though. Buddy of mine was building a Scout and wanted to use a beefier IH truck steering box. Anyway, he got it bolted to the frame and all hooked up only to realize the full size truck boxes spin the other way. Turn the wheel left, Scout goes right. Spin it right, Scout goes left. I tried to get him to leave it that way since it was a trail rig anyway, but he said he couldn't handle it. That is loving hilarious. To echo what kastein said, it probably doesnt actually need replaced. The shaft on the steering box is splined so if that's sloppy, it's in the box. I've seen two styles of arms: both ends have holes or one end has a shaft like a tie rod. If it's the double hole version, I can't see how it would be worn out. They're built like tanks. If it's the hole/shaft kind, the shaft end MAY have some play in it. Your best bet is to just get under there and start yanking on stuff to see what's sloppy. If your box is trashed, you may have some options there. I just replaced a box on a 71 nova with one from a 92 z28.

Protip: If you're loving around with a brake booster off a 4th-gen F-body and manage to dislodge the washer and rubber pad that go between the external and internal pushrods, you can fish them out of the booster with a wire hanger and some sticky-tack. Note: be sure to pull out the vacuum fitting grommet so you can see what the gently caress you're doing.
