 Deadpool

In TV news, I'm really looking forward to the coming season of True Blood. I know people think it has deteriorated greatly over the years, but I prefer to think that it was always trash. Enjoyable trash, but trash.

I've also been bingeing on trashy reality cooking shows, specifically old seasons the US MasterChef and Hell's Kitchen. What other shows fit that sort of niche? I used to watch a lot of Iron Chef, but it's a different sort of contest, and I caught some crappy Kitchen Casino a couple weeks ago... I don't think I'll be revisiting that one.

Yeah the "Big Mystery" shows that followed were largely terrible for reasons beyond their failure to solve those mysteries.

Were there any of those shows that could be considered a success?

I think Supernatural, up through season 5 at least, fits the bill. A big, overreaching mystery that has a definitive backstory and reaches a satisfying conclusion.

Anyone who hasn't already needs to go iTunes (or whatever) and watch episode 5 of Penny Dreadful. Eva Greene goes full retard in what is, in my humble opinion, the greatest hour of television that has aired this year thus far.

I know it's my fault for only halfway paying attention since I watch the show while working, but I am having a lot of trouble identifying a coherent narrative in Penny Dreadful. It just seems like a bunch of classic horror motifs being strung together without much purpose.

I'm not convinced that it's worth going back over the episodes in my free time to see if it is any better that way.

Forgot to mention I'm also considering checking out Halt & Catch Fire, Silicon Vally, and Turn. How are those?

As a Nikita fan, I'm liking Salem a lot since it reunites Michael and Percy. Otherwise it's a fair enough genre show if you're into that sort of thing, with plenty of witchcraft and zombies and demonic influences.

Silicon Valley was fantastic. I can't really recommend that enough.

What's it comparable to? Supernatural/Sleepy Hollow or something more serious? Is it episodic or serial?

It lacks the goofy charm of either of those shows, unfortunately. It's very much serialized, with a plot that continues to unfold, and little "Monster of the Week" hoopla.

I'm not really sure what I'd compare it to. I guess it's more Vampire Diaries in tone than the other two shows you mentioned.

I liked Dominion quite a bit, it's the sort of thing that's right up my alley. I'm going to pretend it's the alternate version Supernatural's history, where the Winchesters weren't around to stop the apocalypse.

The show peaked at that exact moment, unfortunately. I don't have the animosity towards it that a lot of others have, but it doesn't live up to the pilot.

Regarding The Knick pilot, I'm also impressed as the others have posted. I'm a sucker for period dramas, though I was a little let down by the brief tease of having Matt Frewer as one of the stars.

I was just thinking but did anyone here remember the Blade TV show (that lasted one season) on Spike or something?

Blade is one of my favorite shows, no lie. Probably my biggest "Why did this only get one season!?" pick of all time.

Sticky Fingaz was a much better Blade than Snipes, and the arch villain (portrayed by Neil Jackson) was one of the suaver villains to grace cheesy comic/vampire media. The only downside was the leading lady, played by Jill Wagner, who was rather terrible at the role and walked like a wrestler.

The story was very reminiscent of World of Darkness too, with different vampire clans each having their own stereotypes. Great show.

edit: To add to the litany of mediocre vampire shows, Blood Ties is a worthy addition to the list. Great lead actor who shows up in half the things I watch, Kyle Schmid.

Pretty solid cast all the way around, and the kids in the flashbacks couldn't be better clones of their adult counterparts. It's peculiar how similar they all look.

I see a plenty of clip shows, but the recent trend is much nicer - a lot of them now seem to reshoot the familiar scenes from a different character's view. I think Always Sunny did that recently, and it adds a little value to what would otherwise be a boring rehash of old events.

Once Upon a Time is a bad show, and has always been a bad show, that still manages to scratch an itch you never knew you had. It's campy and ridiculous and silly and stupid and your IQ lowers 20% for the next 24 hours after watching an episode, but despite all that it's still fun.

I don't get the Frozen complaints. The show isn't doing anything different with this than they have with a half dozen other fairy tales they've introduced, from Peter Pan to Snow White to Wonderland.
