He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
I'm at the point of no return in Arc Twilight of the Spirits (not actually in the dungeon yet, grinding for money for better equipment first) and so far the biggest cliche that I was expecting to happen hasn't happened, because neither Kharg not Darc or anyone in their respective parties has learned a drat thing which is very interesting.

They have both been told that their mutual hatred for one another's people is going to wake up a bigger baddie that will kill everything, and yet the only reason the game doesn't end with a genocide, or hasn't yet, is that that bigger baddie took away the weapon they were planning on doing it with and is about to turn it on both sets of people. Every time they learn something new that should recontextualise their existence and give them something to think about, they just turn it on each other as reasons it's "Their fault!" so the whole story is just this scene from Into the Woods for 30 hours (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUb64O-BIsE), and everyone's now about to get eaten by the metaphorical giants.

I will be fair in that some characters have very genuine hang ups about one another that they shouldn't have to be expected to forgive because actual crimes were committed, but the overall picture still completely eludes them.

Syphon Filter has linear levels that branch into paths you can take to the objective and it's real cool how there is mission dialogue for every approach. If you double back and take the different path you aren't given a redundant briefing. Detailed for a PS1 game!

The controls and lock-on shooting also hold up impeccably well. Coming up with a third person shooter control scheme on 0 analog sticks must have been brutal. It all came out feeling so fluid though.

edit: Also, the legendary taser will not hesitate to set you on fire as well as your enemy

I was just backgrounding the Syphon Filter series LPs while doing other stuff. :tinfoil: Did make me wanna replay them though, I rented 1 and 2 from blockbuster what must have been a dozen times each as a teen.

I'm at the point where they finally learned the lesson, because the final dungeon shuffled the parties so they were forced to fight together. They still have bad blood individually, but they've gotten over themselves enough to ignore it for the sake of their common goal. Very satisfying to have the full list of characters in one menu now.

That's basically Dragon Quest Builders TBH. Those games are practically Dark Cloud meets Minecraft as you build each town to certain characters specifications and then attract more characters as you do so.

I know there was some leftover world editing tools in the game but did anyone ever reverse engineer it so you could make new maps and missions?

The first thing you'd need to reimplement is the feature where you could add any mod to any weapon. Silencers on grenades, a gun on top of another gun, etc.

You mess with the crabbo...

I wish full weapons customization was back, but I haven't seen it on the mod sites. The most extensive mod I've seen on the mission design side is a big pack of side op missions. It doesn't actually change the game world, though, it's more just a bunch of simple "rescue people/things" objectives where they sprinkled in a bunch of more elite enemies with high end gear.

Playing Jedi dress up with Cal in Jedi Survivor is fun. Something else I thought was fun was how when you open up a chest the animation can change. Empty handed Cal will just open it up normally but if you have your lightsaber out he'll slash it open.

Yeah, Jeremy Blaustein did the voiced stuff and I did the unvoiced--and the song lyrics. There were a couple of bits of flavor text that got added at some point that Jeremy handled, but otherwise, it was me. I was only 24 at the time, so I guess I still had a good handle on a teen girl's voice. :)

holy poo poo awesome job. That game rules. I love Heather's characterization in the game. She is like this perfect balance of snarky teen, but also kinda dumb, and less scared and more pissed off which fits her arc through the game.

A really goofy thing about Jedi Survivor is that they took the gay reaction alien design from Rise of Skywalker and made him gay.

They did a similar thing with Fallen Order where Cal's master is training him and tells him to do something "faster and more intense"

I thought you meant Turgle the speedo-wearing frog alien, who you save early on in a cutscene and who literally cartwheels off in the background, while you're facing off to some bad guy. I was in tears. Turgle owns.

Jedi survivor owns real bad actually. Game pass continues to be the sole light in my life. I'm really enjoying exploring and finding parts for BD-1, who I love so much.

It brought me into the W Omega Force fold after playing the 1-on-1 DW game and beating it with the same move over and over again left a bad taste over 20 years prior. Don't know why I have such a clear memory of that, but i can remember the exact chopping move, too.

It's funny, Persona 5 Strikers was fun and all but what really stuck with me was the road-trip-with-friends plot. It came out as the pandemic was starting to really wear on my psyche and making me feel isolated, especially after the omicron strain started getting all over the place and being able to take a trip with friends in a video game, fighting evil and injustice aside, was the absolute perfect pleasant escapism. I'm not likely to forget that element of the game anytime soon.

I think Yahtzee said it has that odd vibe of being a road trip with friends, since it takes place after the original game as basically filler where the characters have all done their arcs and such and are just friends hanging out and solving mysteries with a talking cat and probably a van.

I also can't help but picture it as a soccer game from the title now.

It may have taken eight goddamn years for the protagonist faction of the Total Warhammer series to get a playable female character, but at least she's a badass at that, being a gothic archmage of death leading an army comprised of perhaps the most brutal guns, artillery, and war machines in the setting.
