Playing an early copy of Citizens of Earth, a top-down, turn-based RPG. I noticed very quickly how similar it looked in gameplay to Earthbound, but when I found a police bulletin that warned of "a spiteful youth with a baseball bat, beating up crows", I knew that the similarities were intentional in some way.

What I love is that they kept one of the best parts of Earthbound in this game: not only will enemies run from you if you're significantly stronger, but getting into fights that are very outmatched in your favour will instantly defeat the enemy and give you exp (and items) without having to actually get into battle. From what I know this is the only game other than Earthbound (or I guess the Mother series) that does this, and it baffles my mind as to why this is the case.

Pretty sure the creator is one of the original developers of earthbound.

e: Was sure I read about that being the case but I can't find anything perhaps I misremembered.

I hadn't seen Endless Legend or Dungeon of the Endless until now. How is DotE's multiplayer? Worthwhile?

My friend and I enjoyed it a lot. You can control up to 4 character so it helps a lot as well because you eventually need to start splitting them up to cover dark rooms and sharing that responsibility makes things a bit easier. One thing to bear in mind is you need to be able to communicate easily because the resources are split between you, so in order to build the more expensive things you'll be going "can I get 10 industry" and so on a lot. Never tried using the text chat, it may be convenient enough for it or not.

The net code was a bit of a pain at first but I think those issues have been sorted out now.

You'll probably want to play in pairs first because in order to unlock the other characters you need to find them, recruit them and then survive for 3 more floors with them. I've not played 4 player but I think if you do try to recruit a new character they replace who you currently have. Not too much of an issue for anyone you've already unlocked but you might stumble upon another char you want while half through unlocking one. Again, not played 4 player so I don't know.

e: Also tactically it can be a good idea to just leave a character in a dark room (dark rooms spawn monsters when opening a door unless someone is in it at the time). You can move them back out once the spawning period is over but that could become tiresome. Anyway, try both and see what works.

Basically if the chance to hit displayed is above 50% the real chance is slightly higher and vice versa when the displayed is below 50% or something like that.

There's a mission (I think its from the new dlc) of a witcher from the school of the cat that gets fed up with some rear end in a top hat town leader jipping him on the pay he's owed and then trying to kill him in a barn and snaps and massacres the whole town. Dude finally had it.

It was from one of the free dlcs they released during the weeks after launch. Fun thing about that; if you approach him for the first time while wearing a set of cat school armour he'll comment on it. Something along the lines of "What's this? A wolf in cat's clothing?"

I've been replaying Witcher 3 and was in Velen, the lovely swamp area where you start the game.

It was the middle of the day and raining as usual and I rode into a small town and noticed that everyone was standing against the walls of their huts. Usually they're running about doing chores or standing around chatting and being all rural and poo poo, so I thought they were all bugged.

Then I realised - they were standing against their huts to get out of the rain :3:

They did this in the first two too, it's a neat touch.

If you have the DLC you also have access to an easier character, Nocturna, who starts with a really good weapon and has a cheat death ability in the bat transform. So that's a good way to get more comfortable with the game.

She also introduces enemies from the new zone right of the bat :drac: which slightly offsets her advantages, at least initially.

I still haven't finished so I don't know big of a spoiler this is but all the characters in Pyre speak in a foreign language where you can kinda make out some words. It never stands out by itself, until a moment where you meet a character that can speak directly into your mind, and when they do it his words are in clear English.

From that scene forwards, I keep looking around if anything else seems suspicious and keeping my ears open for any cognate words.

there's a lot of great stuff here. if you didn't like p5 it won't change your mind but if you did or never played it, p5r is sort of the definitive version imo

Agree with all this (wasn't sold on the den initially but then I found Tycoon, which is great cause I used to play big 2 all the time at school) and will add my favourite small change has been the one to guns. Starting each fight with full ammo is way more fun. I assume there's been some changes to the Tower confidant to account for this.

I agree with the article that DQB2's translation is a work of art, and the pun game is on point. I have to wonder what some of them were in Japanese, because they seem too perfect to have simply been improvised to fit in.

For example, the second island has you rebuilding a mining community and defending it from the Madusa. As part of this, you help Goldirocks the golem go from a stone golem to a golden golem, and build a series of relaxing venues for the miners, a rough-and-ready pub, a swimming pool with cabanna bar, and a fancy cabaret.

It's the tale of Goldirocks and the Three Bars. Is that story known in Japan? Did a golden/stone character and a trio of pubs show up for unrelated reasons?

The DQ wiki page for them says their Japanese name is ゴルドン, which google translate is giving me as Gorudon (and then Gordon in the English box but I'm guessing is probably meant to be Golden? or at least a pun on the two) so maybe it was just a lucky coincidence? Does seem perfect though.

Inscryption starts off with a fairly on rails tutorial explaining its battle mechanics and slay the spire style map movement. It is possible to die but if you've any experience with deck builder card games you can probably make it past the first boss ok. The game has a fairly unorthodox method of making sure you don't do too well on your first go though:

Super Auto Pets is an autobattler with cute animals to send to their deaths off into playful fights. When you buy an animal it makes a noise, either a typical noise made by that animal or an appropriate sound effect (the kangaroo makes a cartoon spring noise). Except the giraffe.

The giraffe is just a lady excitedly saying "Giraffe!"
