I don't like it when you're watching me eat.
As most people here know, every so often, the goons here at Something Awful would hold an open competition to produce themed cover songs for fun and internet points. As of late, however, the participation has seen a bit of a downturn and the last competition never even saw the light of day.

So, it was suggested to take things in a new direction and try something different. Instead of doing more or less straight cover songs (which already has a thread, over here http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3415156), the idea was floated to do parody songs.

So what should potential participants do to submit? Well, take a popular song from any time and change the lyrics to be funny, or if you can't do funny, then do entertaining, or, I dunno, maybe weird? Want to do a Doo Wop song about how Starscream is the best Transformer? Go for it. A heavy metal song about how you can't live without porn? Great! Make it work. Do what you want, just have fun with it.

Completed entries should be hosted on SoundCloud so it's easier to bring everything together on a single playlist.

Since this is a new direction to try and breathe some life into this kind of thing, I was thinking have the first competition be free form, so no specific theme, just see where this goes. However, if there is a general consensus in the thread, we can set one up.

EDIT The people have spoken, and the theme for this first competition will be Superheroes. Also, it doesn't have to be a parody of a specific song, but can be done in the style of a specific artist.

I'm thinking since this is kind of new and most people probably don't have parody ideas running through their heads, a longer lead up time might be kind of nice, so let's say everything should be submitted by the morning of Saturday, August 2nd. That's just under two solid months, but if the past is any indicator, we will probably extend this time limit if there is enough interest generated. Either way a voting thread will be set up and the winner will be determined by popular vote. As per previous Rockstar threads, the winner of this round gets to choose the theme for the next round.

I'd suggest either posting your base song and/or your potential title here, but, there's no rule that says two people can't choose the same base song to work from.

Well, for my own submission I'm going with super heroes. It's geeky, has mass appeal, and probably enough comic and music fans here to get a few submissions. If I don't hear some other suggestions for a theme in the next day or two I might just push forward with that.

I vote no theme this time. If you want to work with a theme, that's great, but I don't think it should be mandatory.

Mostly because I've had an idea in mind for a little while and this is a perfect excuse to do it: Help Me Rondo

That's right. It's a cover of Help Me Rhonda that is all about GAS. I hope I can pull it off.

OK, got my new lyrics all written out, so all I have to do now is record the drat thing.

Also, I'm going to put a quick vote in here as to whether or not this first outing should have a theme or not. If the votes say yes to a theme, it will be Superheroes.

So, theme or no theme?

Voting closes end of day Friday.

My vote is for a theme. That's always been my favorite part of Rockstar and makes it different than the "songs you covered" threads, and I'd love to still have that coherence for Mockstar.

Just to be clear, the song we submit doesn't necessarily have to be based on an existing song?

For the record, I assumed that this contest was cover song + parody lyrics (as in Weird Al's Like a Surgeon; a cover song with altered lyrics).

But there are also genre parodies where you do a song in a given style, but it's otherwise an original song (as in Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid; a new song done in the style of Devo).

Then there are also just funny songs, like Jonathan Coulton does, which I don't think count as "song parody."

I will say that the one reservation I have about this particular contest is that people might focus on the words more than the music. One of my favorite things about the RockStars is when people do a completely different musical interpretation of the source material, whereas usually with song parodies people stick pretty close to the arrangement and musical feel of the original song. I dunno. I'll keep an open mind.

Those are good points, and this is all really early development and our first shot at something like this. I want this to be successful, and to me that means getting as many people involved as possible, and that may mean having some things open to interpretation. It may sound kind of cheesy, but I want this to be something fun for everyone, both participants and listeners. I don't want this to be the "CzarChasm Parody Roundup". This isn't my show, and it's not even my idea. I'm just the guy who created the thread because I like the idea.

Overall, I say let's keep this pretty open. If you want to do a funny song in the style of someone else, that should be allowed. But, personally, I think that doing a direct parody is more accessible. If it doesn't work, we can refine the submission guidelines for the next competition.

OK Voting ended a few days ago and going with a theme has won.

As mentioned above, the theme for this round will be Superheroes

And, this will be open to any style of song as well, whether that's direct parody, or done in the style of another artist.

OP has been updated to reflect these changes.

Honestly that sounds really specific, a parody song AND a theme to your parody? Oh well, the vote is over.

Anyway, I think I have a combo that might work, and I will be doing Smooth - Carlos Santana. Do we need to include our superhero too?

Anybody doing anything for this? Seems awfully quiet. I'm finding that writing a whole parody is a lot of work, lyric wise at least. Still up for it but since the thread is about to slip off the front page thought I'd check in to see if it's happening or not?

Have put a lot of work into it so far. Currently struggling with the desire to make it more musically interesting vs just getting it over with. What I have right now is basically a straight cover musically- which was surprisingly hard work, due to some weird production and melodic choices in the original. But I'm not really interested in note-for-note covers. I have a mental outline of the lyrics, but haven't fleshed them out yet.

I actually just now figured out what I want to do for it. A song about Superman called Up, Up, and Away set to Nirvana's Something In The Way. Something along the lines of:

Living in New York
Pretending to be weak
And the newspaper I work at
Is full of idiots, cause they
Don't see when I'm here, or
Notice when I'm leavin'
Told Lois I'm Kal El, but
She didn't believe it

Up up and away, yeah
