I want to say something about scoring tips being added to the OP from good people (not me) Also kitchen our earlier constant S ranks were awesome, I honestly prefer cleaning up ground units after fighters strike through, it saves time and guarantees the S rank, my bottom rank be damned. I was a little miffed in that last one where the other team left 2 AA guns at their spawn that cost us 20 seconds and the S.

After doing very good rounds with the super hornet, now I am trying to get as many air kills as possible with the T-50 (mainly because of how good it looks). Getting better slowly, but not yet getting the same amount of points as before.

I've been doing most of my sorties lately in the F-16 Desert Rock. It's not on good on paper as say the F/A-18 or later multiroles but it starts out with GPBs. I've gotten quite a few MVPs already going after high-value ground targets post-emergency. I also have a F-14A I keep on hand for Moby Dick missions. I need to comb the old thread for the one guy that cleaned house on those with an attacker.

I think people are starting to wise up to the fact that ground-pounding is the way to go. So much so, in fact, that I've been rolling in my F-15C nearly exclusively for the past few days and doing mostly air-to-air, and I get MVP a decent percentage of the time. Less competition for kills, more points per target, and just straight-up more fun. Especially chasing down Typhoons in Tokyo. Also, I don't know if anyone's mentioned it here yet, but a few of the emergency missions have SR-71s or Tu-95s that spawn at 40,000 feet or so that aren't marked TGT, so people don't realize they exist. They're also completely undefended and worth a poo poo-ton of points.

I hope Scinfaxi is one of those emergencies that spawns those "hidden" planes because I'd rather go hunt one of those than try and milk out ~1,500 points from a tough as poo poo ground target while flying a fighter.

Oh man, I kept hearing about the Ace Combat series for years and I know I love some of its music but I feel I have to ask if this is an okay game for me to jump in on. I don't have the money for the Single player pack, but I still kind of want to try this out. Is it more of a simulator or is it arcadey? Basically can I play this as my first Ace Combat and have fun with it?

The game is more or less built from the ground up to give old-school AC fans nostalgia boners by incorporating the old series with the real world, and it's pretty successful at it. That being said, it's still a good game on its own merits, it's fun and you can do everything for free if you don't mind gimping yourself in-game to do it. It's definitely an arcade game, down to charging 75 cents per play if you buy fuel, and you can play it in short bursts and get by with supplied fuel just fine. If it's your first AC game, you'll be fine, you'll just miss out on the references the game loves to drop on you.

You can't get much arcadier than Ace Combat on the arcade-realism scale. I'd say jump in because you'll have enough free fuel thrown at you to play for a while before spending any money, and if you like this one you'll like pretty much any Ace Combat that isn't Assault Horizon since they all have identical controls and gameplay during missions.

Kind of funny. I was just looking through my collection and realized I have both Ace Combat 4 and 5 sitting here. Looking back at it I picked them up on the trip up to Connecticut for my grandfather's funeral but never played them. I suppose I'll have to dig up my PS2 and see about doing that sometime soon.

PSN ID: satequila Does completing a special challenge automatically give you the plane or does it only give you a box with a chance at getting one? How high can you level up a plane and do the starting ones remain competitive with levels or are you just better off getting rid of them for newer ones as they come along?

Got the A-10 today. It's pretty beastly, and faster than I expected (probably helps that I stacked it with speed/acceleration boosting parts). I'm really glad they at least gave the 30mm gatling gun it's own sound that's different from other guns, I'm loving that thing. I even used it to get a gun kill on a MiG-29 The credit crunch is starting to get painful - I want to buy the F/A-18F too, but after three matches in the A-10 I've already got the Strike Eagle and its accompanying part halfway researched, and I want to rush to the Rafale as fast as possible.

I couldn't really handle Expert controls so I'm sticking with Standard for now. Might do better with them later if I play 4 and 5. My only real complaint is that the game's netcode seems kind of shoddy. I got only one actual hit out of about 20+ tries with Quick Match, the rest either telling me a room was full or, most often, just failing with no error stated. Good lord, though. When you do get into a match it's pretty great! I really suck at PVP games so having this sort of Competitive Co-Op is perfect for me!

Just use room search, quick match blows and also this way you can cherry pick lower ranked rooms.

I find Standard to be quite a bit easier if I'm flying an Attacker ("easier" meaning that I fly into buildings/terrain/enemies only half the time compared to seven-eighths of the time), but I switch it back if I'm going to be dogfighting. If you find that Infinity and the PS2 games have given you an Ace Combat itch that you absolutely need scratched and you want something you've never tried before, the PSP games (Ace Combat X and Ace Combat: Joint Assault/Ace Combat X2) and the more recent 3DS game (Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy) are very enjoyable. Keep in mind, though, that to unlock everything in the second PSP title, it is necessary to play with someone else on a couple "Joint Assault" missions, online or ad hoc. I doubt there are many players online these days, so just be aware that you'll probably need a savegame editor or a friend with the game and a PSP to unlock some stuff. I made a bit more fleshed-out version of the aircraft tree image. It's in no way meant to be in the exact layout as the actual thing, I compressed it as much as I could to keep from breaking any tables. Lines still point where they should though, at least.
