Catching Up: When Tommy continued to strugg

All right, this is the end of the month so there’s a lot riding on who gets wins now. There’s only three more chapters after this one. The time to be decisive is now.

Linda’s painting has evolved into… this. I don't know what it is but I like it. Does anyone have any ideas what it's supposed to actually be?

Did you think I was kidding about Tynan wearing sun glasses and a leather jacket?! No! He’s just so loving cool that Dan just had to put a picture of them on the wall in his office.

DAN

Wait, Tommy is struggling in school and had some extra reading assignments for him? Why did we wait until the end of month two to learn about this?! I mean, at least Dan is being proactive about it now.

I got this chapter much earlier my first time playing it.

Dan dreams of his perfect life: Tommy and Linda don’t exist and he sleeps 12 hours a day.

Yeah, time just keeps on slipping-slipping-slipping into the future, doesn't it Dan? Though I’m not sure why he needs so much time to write. I mean, I get that it’d interfere with his writing process, but just 6 hours a day would take huge chunks out, wouldn't it?

Okay, okay, it was just a suggestion.

Whoa-Linda
I know, I shouldn’t have snapped. It’s just…-Dan

Dan, being a responsible adult, continues to take his frustrations out on those around him.

Hey, if anyone could improve your book and also conquer the world, it’s Tynan. Also, I hope that Dan’s novel features a literal logjam.

Dan considers secluding himself from the rest of the family which, judging by how he snapped at Linda, might be a good thing for everyone. Speaking of Linda...

LINDA

It's weird how it feels like the family is going in different directions. Like one is always winning and the one is always losing and one is always somewhere in the middle. It's crazy.

Linda wants to figure out a way to get the family together so she’s trying to figure out everything they could do together. This chapter features a lot of the adults being strangely proactive about their family life. Usually they’d need ghostly assistance to care about each other this much.

So it looks like they decided on family dinners. Honestly, Linda’s whole plan sounds pretty good to me. It is a bit odd that she’s not thinking about Tommy’s learning difficulties at all but I guess she’s got dinner on the brain.

We barely talked at all yesterday-Linda
Wow, you’re right–Dan

So it looks like she’s right about the relationship kind of deteriorating. Her dinner idea might be that silly.

Once again, not talking to my parents about their relationship sounds like a perfect visit to me.

It seems like Dan and Linda want completely different things this time around.

TOMMY

Here’s that note Dan mentioned. It looks like Tommy can’t read so good well. I don’t know why we’re getting to this now though. You probably shouldn't start tutoring your kid half way through summer.

I feel like alliteration might be lost on someone who can't identify letters, Lonnie.

Tommy don’t need no education! gently caress Lonnie!

Apparently Tommy is being bullied at school. :( Maybe it’s because he’s falling behind in school, maybe it’s because he’s Tommy.

Jesus, you are very neurotic for a ~5 year old, Tommy. You shouldn’t develop crippling this kind of self-doubt until you’re at least a teen.

Will it make me smarter?-Tommy
Honey, listen: You are smart.-Linda

Linda is mommin’ Tommy hardcore, yo.

Because Tommy hasn't been getting his way in recent votes, his relationship with Dan has deteriorated to where it was when the game started. This sounds negative, but remember Tynan caused this, so it must serve some greater purpose.

Don’t let the man tell you what to do, Tommy. Let the all-seeing spectral being tell you what to do.
So, Omnipresent Ghost Crew, what should we do? Vote for seclusion, inclusion, or education.

Y'know, Dan is a published novelist who depends on writing for a living - why doesn't he have an established writing schedule by now? I know he's having a hard time with his latest book (the game won't let us forget), but I feel like if he had a better agent who could manage him or whatever he wouldn't be scrabbling about to find his 'magic cure' and neglecting his family. Maybe if we had focused on Linda's art, she could've taken over as breadwinner or helped out financially.

Tommy and Dan, but I feel really bad for Linda.

Tommy, because I assume it will seque into a Reading Rainbow section, and Linda since if Dan forgets to eat he'll eventually die.

Linda's option is another example of a decision not really being a decision. Everybody needs to eat an hour-or-so dinner shouldn't affect any one's schedule to a significant degree.

The choices seem so, well... the game doesn't know how to balance concerns does it? Last week seemed the most balanced. Who gets to stay in the house. Every other week feels like at least one person doesn't have as strong a need as every one else or that it would be easy to fit it all in if it weren't for video game logic.

Dan and Tommy. They went out there to finish his book, not revitalize the relationship or Linda's career.

Also having a best-selling author with an illiterate child is funny in the ironic sense, but still kind of a dick move and since the alternative is "At least they eat dinner as a family!" I say gently caress your scheduled dinner time, let's learn some goddamn letters.

Tommy won which means that he gets to learn letters. What an elitist.

And Linda's got a compromise. I'll admit it makes me smile to select something so uncharacteristically large, even though there's not real reason it should.

This time both of the Time Journals are in one place so I decided to just use one picture. The closest one goes chronologically first, if you're curious.

I hope you weren't expecting a resolution to the story of the fiance. That's ending on a cliffhanger so we can instead learn about a lonely, old widower named K---- Williams*.

*Spoiler Alert: It's actually comedian Katt Williams.

So K---- has become a hermit, living in the Ghost Shack. This story is a bit odd because unlike the indecisive bride and the curious investigator, there's not clear way for us to intervene here.

Don't worry, Tommy, you won the vote. Chillax, child.

Look at these people, ending their sentences with prepositions. No wonder their son is illiterate.

Okay, this reads like an ad for one of those outlet mall learning centers.

I like how the way this is framed shows the growing distance between Dan and his family. I think that's neato and hope it was intentional.

Even with the picture of Tynan looking over him, Dan is still struggling to finish his novel. That's okay, there's still time.

Or is there?! Yup, we're now 2/3rds done with the game and our actions are taking hold.

I'm genuinely surprised his book is going so well. Is there anything Tynan can't do?

At least one person in the family can put together a successful art gallery. :iceburn:

God drat. I looks like we've been neglecting Linda and her marriage is crumbling. Before accusations are made, this isn't rigged and it's completely possible to give everyone a happy outcome.

That's right. We only have three more chapters left so if we want to make a change, we're going to have to act soon.

Vacation: It was summer, and summer was

This intro is the vaguest in the entire game but it reads like a beautiful poem.

Because we opted to make this child literate, Lonnie Learns Letters is now the official coffee table book of the Villa Del Fantasma.

Linda’s completed paintings: I Know Why the Caged Mom Bird Sings and Vague Unease in Green.

Linda is painting some nice, fluffy clouds. I wonder what depressing image this is going to end up as.

Actually, I already know. Because I’ve played it a few times. Because I’m doing a Let’s Play of it.

DAN

Dan got drunk and went crazy with sticky notes. As the snoopy spectral spirit we are, we're going to have to read them all. Normally, each character has 3-4 notes per chapter but this time Dan has 8.

It looks like Dan got some nice fan mail. Hey, if his marriage doesn’t improve, maybe he can hook up with this chick.

Positive affirmation is important. :) Take it one step at a time!

Yeah, don’t have negative thoughts, Dan. Enjoy this!

Uh, okay. I mean, you should probably fear death too, but okay. Not sure what this has to do with writing a book, to be honest.

Dan, if your ideas aren’t “dangerous”, that’s a-okay. You’re writing a novel not a treatise on late capitalism. Just focus on completing it.

I know this is a silly question to ask a novelist, but do you even want to write a book, Dan?

Dan. Dan. Reread your earlier notes, okay? Is there anybody you can talk to?

After begging to be secluded in his office all day, Dan’s changed his mind and wants to spend some time out and about. Also, it sounds like Dan is at a make-or-break moment in his career. As you know by reading the first 6 chapters.

Just like the little steam engine, Dan’s positive self-affirmation will help him achieve his goal of writing a dumb book.

How was work?-Linda
Oh, you know, could always be better.-Dan

This is a very unremarkable conversation about Dan's moderate success but at least my weird camera angle gave Linda goblin-face. That’s kind of amusing, right?

Look at those giant-rear end cuffs in his jeans. Way to be, Dan.

Dan’s really upset that he couldn’t get a chance to sit down and focus on his book...

... And his remedy to that problem is going to the beach. Dan, you’re a paradox, wrapped in an enigma, inside of a very dadly dad.

LINDA

The long newspaper article is actually for Tommy so I’m going to reuse this screenshot later. This is high efficiency LP, people.

So, much like Dan’s Memory Conversation earlier, this is kind of pointless. This chapter has a weird amount of poorly-masked filler.

Also, quiche lorraine is a breakfast food, Linda. :colbert:

I hope Anne is into long, rambling letters about hiking, because I sure am!

So, Linda’s feeling like she’s in a cage surrounded by beautiful nature. I wonder if she’s ever channeled those feelings into any of her art, hrrmmm.

Linda yearns for a simpler time, before windows and ugly sweaters and house ghosts.

I’m going to go for a hike!-Linda
Okay, be safe!-Dan

Huh, it seems like Linda is genuinely outdoorsy after all and her camping idea isn't just a random whimsy.

Fun fact: 85% of Linda's day is spent staring out a window.

Whenever someone is “losing” so to speak, their notes get really, really sad. So, because of our previous decisions, Linda’s relenting her loveless marriage. Way to go, goons. Are we going to invest time into fixing this or focus on maintaining the other character's paths?

As expected, Linda just wants to go hiking. This could actually meld pretty well with Dan’s option, in my opinion. But Dan probably doesn't want to "rough it" at all.

TOMMY

See! I said I'd reuse this picture! Reduce, reuse, recycle in your LPs, people!

So this is like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! Except instead of a golden ticket, it’s a plastic rocket. And instead of a chocolate factory, it’s a theme park. And instead of a limited group, over a hundred people will get to go. Okay, this is not really like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at all.

Sorry to break it to you, child, but you will not be able to fly a real rocket.

Only a child’s mind could create a scenario as fanciful and whimsical as an entire family having fun at a kid's theme park.

Tommy is learning words pretty rapidly. Were... were they not even trying to teach him at all before last week?

BOOOoooooOOOFFSHHH-Tommy
Careful, Hun.-Linda

BOOOoooooOOOFFSHHH!

We were borderline last time so now Dan’s back in Tommy’s good graces because he decided to teach him how to read. Presumably he only did it so he could have a free proof-reader.

Woo! We made it to the end of the update! Dan's post it fetish made this episode super long. So, vote and stuff.
