Xenoblade had the hypest cutscene combat theme ever, you knew some A-grade anime bullshit was about to go down when that came on

Yeah this seems like it's leaning more towards the earlier Xeno- games in tone than it is Xenoblade, which is a shame as the shounen framing and hot blooded no-nonsense protagonist helped alot in making the series' philosphical plotting and gnostic themes more relatable and engaging.

I mean we'll see and I'm still totally going to pick this up because the exploration looks amazing but I'm expecting a big dip in the story department as things stand

It was quite funny how idiotically single minded Shulk was at the beginning of the game, even after it's been extensively established the Monado can't hurt faced mechon in every cutscene he still keeps going after Metal Face like this time it'll be different before going down in like two seconds

I was kinda hoping they might trim some of the fat for the sequel rather than double down on the mmo trash content. I do like to do sidequests in rpgs but having to do all the 'find 5 fossil monkeys' crap to get to the actual good bits was a pain and an active detriment to the game

I've got a growing feeling this is going to be a mess, it's massively ambitious and there's obviously been a ton of work put in but there just seems to be a pileup of weird bad choices which just seem outright worse compared to Xenoblade. I'm calling it now a major complaint is going to be 'there's tons of interchangable characters who barely feature in the plot and all have generic skills' ala Chrono Cross for one, the character art and music seem a massive step backwards, the MMO quest structure seems like it's doubling down on Xenoblade's worst traits and the main storyline seems suspiciously like it's aiming for humourless anime melodrama over the lively shounen action show Xenoblade did

I'd really like to be wrong but the more they show of this game the more it seems like Xenoblade was a happy acident

Sorry did you miss the bit where I said said Xenoblade had a great shounen plot? I get it's an anime series through and through but Xenoblade had a pretty snappy plot with clear character motivations and an action focus, Xenoblade X has a blank slate protagonist, a cast of like fifteen and is written by the guy who wrote that really bad Gundam show.

Anyways some of the gameplay improvements do look pretty good and I don't wanna disparge things unfairly, it just seems like the only thing which has any character at all right now is the environments

you're focusing on the wrong word. xenoblade's got all kinds of crazy melodrama going on (the game opens with your girlfriend getting killed by a robot for god's sakes) and the implication that "the main storyline seems suspiciously like it's aiming for humourless anime melodrama" unlike xenoblade is pretty funny

Okay if you're going to be pedantic let's say 'turgid' instead, Xenoblade used melodrama to drive it's plot pretty well, Shulk got mad and hot blooded and beat things up (or tried at least). Pretty much everyone in this are military personnel who's main character trait seems to be 'takes job seriously', I dunno maybe it'll still be good but it seems like they have alot less to work with and the huge focus they're placing on working for corporations and doing MMO quest stuff makes me think the game and the plot are going to have a casual relationship at best anyway

Honestly I don't know why you're getting so bent out of shape about this, I hope it'll still be good and I'm still keeping a close eye on it, it just looks to me like they've made alot of weird decisions which are moving away from what I actually liked about the first game

I'll spoiler tag this, just in case - details the structure of the plot, no actual plot details revealed:

The game is no longer a linear, one-way journey through areas - the game world opens up from the beginning. It's more akin to something in World of Warcraft where you pick up a quest chain from a central hub and then heading out into the world rather than a JRPG where you're guided along a path. The story missions aren't driven by events, but rather "missions" undertaken by your characters. Your protagonist is silent and passive, and there's only really two story characters in your party (one who is 13-years-old), so even in the main story missions, it never feels like much character development is happening.

The story missions are also gated by side-quests and exploration tasks which you have to undertake to progress the story, so you're kind of forced to take part in the more grindy, MMO aspects of the game to see the main game. As such, the main quest (I don't even know what that is yet, 10 hours into the game) takes a backseat quite often. In the first game, I enjoyed doing side-quests and exploration when I wanted to bring my level up for a boss. It's quite annoying to have them forced on you to progress the story in this game, especially given the repetitive nature of the exploration/collection/monster hunting tasks. The world is also huge and some of the quest hints for collection quests are vague, so you just kind of hope to run into the correct items.

For the fans it is a game that could never live up to the hype, plus it seems each person had their own one thing that they think should have been changed from the original but wasn't.

For professionals you will have people like the kotaku guy who doesn't seem to like the style of game if he had the same complaints on the first one, and plenty of reviewers who just seem to not like jrpgs.

If they'd just made Xenoblade 2: Kill God Even Harder I'd have been pretty happy. Implying fans are impossible to please when the devs are clearly pulling away from the most popular aspect of the previous title and expanding on the least popular is pretty stupid, it looks to me like they have just made a mediocre game

The exploration in Xenoblade was cool but the quest design was trash and just finding NPCs to actually receive and hand in quests was often a hideous chore in itself, I mean the number one bit of advice people have been giving to new players in this thread is 'don't do anymore sidequests than you need to, it's just not worth it'. So unless they've picked up things in that department pretty massively, Xenoblade Sidequests: The Game really doesn't sound like something to get excited about to me

Most sidequests are picked up from the same place (a quest board type thing in town) so that at least has improved. More sidequests actually have real plotlines attached, with some of them actually causing permanent changes to the world (supposedly?). I haven't really hear much complaining about quest design, probably because sidequesting is actually the focal point this time around so they put more effort into it.

Also if you didn't do a bunch of sidequests you wouldn't get your relationship web nice and full of good relationships and that was just unacceptable to me. That was the one true reason I did all those boring Xenoblade quests. Too bad that game had like only one good sidequestline (Nopon drug ring) though.

Well, that's something. Trying to locate quest givers in Alcamoth or the Nopon city is something no one should ever be subjected

I really like the game but I agree with pretty much everything ImpAtom said a few pages back, the MMO sidequesting really aggressively drags the game down. I do think the plot's pretty cool though, it's pretty much all JRPG and shounen cliches but it's done with a tremendous amount of style and intelligence; if you were ever going to play one game about a hot blooded young man killing God, I'd make it Xenoblade

What loving universe do you live in where these things exist? The only mainstream SRPG is Starcraft and Red Alert. And Red Alert is dead.

And fire emblem always had boobs, like goddamn the SNES games had tits out in the open. They wore Chainmail bikinis.

At least in the GBA titles, the female characters mostly wore standard armour and the romances were either implied (in the case of men) or pretty clean, compare to:

quote:

Camilla: “The way you’re using your hand feels so good. Very skillful.”
Lazwald: “I also want to touch you, will you come closer?”
Takumi: “You can touch me wherever I like, but don’t say I didn’t warn you…”
Joker: “We can’t… it’ll have to wait for tonight.”
Camilla: “When you do it this much, it’s embarrassing…”

Finally, considering that you can have actual family members (siblings) in your party, this applies to them as well. Yes, this means you can experience your brother or sister uttering naughty things, like Takumi (the protagonist’s brother) saying “If mother saw this, what would she think?”

I get it's a financial issue due to shrinking markets etc, but it's a shame the series has gone from something you could reasonable let a pre-teen kid play unsupervised to actively baiting horny otakus
