It's interesting to note that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion reversed the traditional video game sequence of forest (pleasant) and then sewer (forbidding) by putting the sewer first. This was so it would be that much more refreshing when you emerged from the murky below. V effective, actually. They tried to reproduce the effect in Fallout 3 but failed miserably by forgetting to make the world pleasant.

A common water level tactic is to make the music really good to distract you from the really bad gameplay.

In new super mario bros u the path splits and you can skip the water level altogether. The other level is the ice level though

Water levels in Mega Man games are for the most part pretty inoffensive because they never try to go out of their way to gently caress with the controls. They control pretty much the same as non-water levels except your jumps are floatier. Mega Man Legends 2 does have one of the most obnoxious water levels I've ever seen in a video game, though.

water level wasnt that hard, but the zelda menu made it 50x more tedious because you had to swap boots and poo poo every other step
