Even if there isn't another Beto next time, this year's campaign has a material effect beyond the seats he coattailed to victory, does it not?

Just the sheer number of people who registered and voted. Won't most of them tend to vote in the future?

So even if Beto doesn't run for anything in Texas again, this race has a material effect on the balance in the state doesn't it?

Even aside from the Congressional and state house candidates and judges that he coattailed over the finish line, just the sheer number of people getting registered and voting for the first time makes a difference going forward does it not?

I can't remember where I saw it but there was a statistic that turnout in general is actually high among voters who are registered. The low turnout among voting age/voting eligible people in America is largely because of people not being registered. Is that true?

I’m having a hard time envisioning any outcome other than Crenshaw running for Senate or Governor in the near future. If GOP voters in TX will pick Abbott, Patrick and Cruz, no way they won’t go ape for an eyepatch wearing pirate/SEAL.

I'm trying to find the text of the bill. If you literally have to be a citizen to get auto insurance, then people legally in the naturalization process can't get car insurance? Or permanent residents? How is that useful for anyone?

Ok, here it is:

Can't recall. Seem to have spread out from there to other parts of Asia and the GCC. Not sure where else.

It's lol too, because the int'l Popeye's recipes are poo poo garbage, tasting nothing like the American version, and if there's one group of people who *does not need help* cooking awesome fried chicken it's Southeast Asia's Muslim communities, heh. It's at least regionally famous that Muslim fried chicken from Southern Thailand on down is The Best fried chicken in the rest of the world, with probably Penang being the most famous? Not sure, that's from a Thai perspective. Other countries probably have a different take.

I am currently in Texas, though, and will be sure to eat our superior, greasier, unhealthier, spicier version of heartburn-inducing Popeye's to honor Houston's diversity and blah blah and so on.

KFC has been huge in Asia, particularly China, for many years now (I seem to remember reading it was more popular than McDonalds in China), so even though Popeye's food is much better than KFC in my opinion they have a huge uphill struggle if they're gonna try to gain market share on KFC there.

Especially considering how badly gerrymandering in MI WI and PA have locked the GOP into those state houses.

Atul Gawande posted:

It is spring in McAllen, Texas. The morning sun is warm. The streets are lined with palm trees and pickup trucks. McAllen is in Hidalgo County, which has the lowest household income in the country, but it’s a border town, and a thriving foreign-trade zone has kept the unemployment rate below ten per cent. McAllen calls itself the Square Dance Capital of the World. “Lonesome Dove” was set around here.

McAllen has another distinction, too: it is one of the most expensive health-care markets in the country. Only Miami—which has much higher labor and living costs—spends more per person on health care. In 2006, Medicare spent fifteen thousand dollars per enrollee here, almost twice the national average. The income per capita is twelve thousand dollars. In other words, Medicare spends three thousand dollars more per person here than the average person earns.

The explosive trend in American medical costs seems to have occurred here in an especially intense form. Our country’s health care is by far the most expensive in the world. In Washington, the aim of health-care reform is not just to extend medical coverage to everybody but also to bring costs under control. Spending on doctors, hospitals, drugs, and the like now consumes more than one of every six dollars we earn. The financial burden has damaged the global competitiveness of American businesses and bankrupted millions of families, even those with insurance. It’s also devouring our government. “The greatest threat to America’s fiscal health is not Social Security,” President Barack Obama said in a March speech at the White House. “It’s not the investments that we’ve made to rescue our economy during this crisis. By a wide margin, the biggest threat to our nation’s balance sheet is the skyrocketing cost of health care. It’s not even close.”

The question we’re now frantically grappling with is how this came to be, and what can be done about it. McAllen, Texas, the most expensive town in the most expensive country for health care in the world, seemed a good place to look for some answers.

Zwabu

Can anyone comment on what voting system/equipment was in use where they voted?

Me: Collin County. In the past few elections it had been all Diebold Systems, touchscreen only, no paper ballot or record. 2020: Some other kind of touchscreen that prints a paper ballot after you've verified how you're voting, you bring the paper ballot to the scan machine that scans it and presumably it drops into storage where it could be used in a recount? Assuming the paper ballot is retained this seems much better. (Voted day one of early voting, took maybe half an hour, everyone masked, good social distancing observance.)

I'm also curious if anyone did drive through voting such as apparently exists in Harris County, if they could describe or comment upon what that was like.

What do people attribute the early voting turnout in TX to?

1. People eager as gently caress to vote out Trump
2. People pissed and reacting against fuckery like Abbott and the TX GOP not opening up mail voting to all, and the 1 drop box per county thing
3. People concerned about getting COVID so voting earlier to hopefully get less exposure in a shorter line
4. All of the above?

Yeah. It’s very popular to trash Beto in D&D for making an ill advised Presidential run, but his run against Cruz set the stage for where the Texas race is now. He energized and got a ton of voters registered, and despite losing had a ton of coattails helping many local downballot candidates to win, with big knock on effects for election access around the state. It’s been a huge net positive.

Here (North DFW burbs) we seem to be on a program of 1-2 hours on, several hours off, then on again for an hour or two. After an initial 13 hour outage. The place seems not to get much below 50 F on this program and I don't get uncomfortably cold as long as I'm layered up. Since I don't have any gas/propane whenever the power comes on I spring into action cooking a bunch of stuff, making coffee, charging phone and storage batteries. Now I have a few days worth of cooked food that at worst I can eat cold instead of just tuna out of the can or peanut butter on untoasted bread (or just spooned out of the jar lol).
