Also if BYOStreamingStick at hotels becomes a frequent thing then they will probably start throttling that traffic to keep things usable.

edit: Or start charging for "premiumum wifi".

They already do all of this. People have been streaming Netflix/video using computers on hotel networks for many years. They sometimes throttle, sometimes they don't. Also, the "fast lane" model is alive and well at most hotels. Free access is dog slow, premium is at a cost or free for frequent travelers.

Hotel networks are wildly unreliable, so don't go buy a bevy of fire sticks hoping to watch an entire series of House of Cards on your upcoming vacation.

Having the option to tap into their bandwidth with the hope it will work good enough is a good option.

I prefer to use my Fire Stick + HDTV wherever possible. Then I can shitpost using my computer while watching Netflix on the hotel TV.

No matter what I try, Kodi won't show up in my list of recently used apps. I "bought" it on Amazon, refreshed my account, launched Kodi from the Settings menu, but nothing. I've rebooted. Nothing works.

Any ideas short of uninstalling and refreshing?

I have two fire TV sticks and one won't display Kodi no matter what I do. The other one showed up as soon as I refreshed purchased apps or whatever.

Just got the update. Plex has an audio delay over bluetooth headphones which I don't think is adjustable. Even if it were would be a PITA to switch back and forth.

Amazon content audio is perfectly synced.

All in all a nice update but would be a fantastic update if all the apps had synced BT audio.

I had to disconnect and then reconnect my amazon account to my fire tv to get it to show up

I am trying to decide between Chromecast and Fire TV. I currently travel a lot and my aim is to plug something into the hotel TV so I can watch Netflix and Plex. Maybe HBO Go and Hulu, but Netflix and Plex are my primary targets. I'll need to log into the hotel WiFi and probably enter some code on a web browser to access that WiFi. Help me decide?

Fire TV just added support for those type of log ins in the latest update. I need to update the OP.

Amazon Fire TV enables you to connect to Wi-Fi that requires web authentication—this includes Wi-Fi at most major hotels, as well as some universities.

I haven't used the Chromecast so I'm not sure how it compares.

Yeah the Chromecast wouldn't work with a hotel login gate. You'd need to use a portable hotspot or something.

Anyone doing any gaming on this thing? I'm trying to use a 360 controller which works fine but the connection lights around the guide button blink continuously which is beyond annoying. Failing any way to fix that, should I just grab one of Amazon's bluetooth controllers or is there something better out there?

Getting the Kodi keymap and the Harmony to cooperate was really annoying by the way, there are only like 8 buttons on the Fire Remote to work with so I had to get really creative in the keyboard.xml.

Also any way to get snes9x into the Recent list on Home?

If I wanted to get my 3 year olds a tablet to replace their leap frog thing would this be a good one to get or would the lack of access to the google play store be a hindrance?

I'd imagine the easy Prime streaming integration and the FreeTime service (where you can pay a few bucks a month for unlimited access to a bunch of kid apps, and put parental limits on time usage, etc) would outweigh the lack of Play Store access.

Yes to this. I still haven't bought one, but they also have this specifically for kids: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Edition-Display-Wi-Fi-Kid-Proof/dp/B00LOR524M

Great, appreciate the feedback and I just picked two up. That version is just the kids specific case ($12 on its own), a year of their kid service ($2.99/month), and the two year no questions asked warranty. I'm still coming out ahead on buying everything but the warranty (not interested) and also unlocked the ads on the screen. Think this'll be perfect for them. Bonus points for having the cases in their favorite colors since that'll be the most important feature...

I get this in Hulu Plus a whole bunch lately. It was being such a turd last night that I moved my Roku from the bedroom just so we could finish the show we were watching without it stuttering and pausing after every commercial break. I'm not sure if this thing is just heating up from overuse, but certain services / apps are making this stick a real pain to enjoy.

For using myself I prefer regular android, but for something that young kids will be using, the fire with the kids service is really nice. It gives them a bunch of games/videos/books which they can use, but really limits any trouble they could get into. No web access for kid accounts, no way to buy a bunch of junk in f2p games, they can take all the pictures/videos they want but can't share them all over the internet, etc. You can also set limits, so that e.g. they'll have to spend 30 minutes reading books before they can watch any shows, or so that they can't log in after bedtime, or spend too much time on the tablet daily.

my daughter thoroughly enjoys her fire hd 6. It's the perfect form factor for her small hands, and has all of the functionality that she needs. The only bad part is how it ties to my amazon account. I want her to have her own account that I can just share with, but it's ok.

Has anyone else hit this "HDCP not authorised" issue on the Fire TV Stick? It's come up only recently for me, and I haven't been able to fix it yet. I have some more things to try out before I break down and buy the HDMI splitter everyone seems to think will work, but I have a hard time shelling out $25 on top of the $20 I spent for the stick itself.

Uninstall and reinstall. It helped mine a bit but it's still buffer city for certain games. It'll be better next year. Takes the MLB guys a season to fix the bugs on new platforms.

Have to say that I'm super happy with my Fire TV, by far the best straight HTPC for cheap. Kodi, Netflix, Hulu, Plex, Prime, some emulators and etc. Everything works very well, I just access everything from the Recently menu and it all works well with my Harmony Smart Control. Can't believe its only $100.

I've repurposed my old NUC as an Steam in-home streaming box but other than it just doesn't do much these days.

I think maybe I just read your original question wrong. For some reason I thought you set it up so when Kodi launches a different app comes up in it's place. Reading it now I am guessing you launch Kodi and it comes up directly to a built in addon that streams hockey and you don't want it to?

Wonder if you can just go into the application manager and clear settings/cache for Kodi to fix it.

So just upgraded to the Kodi Isengard beta on the Fire TV and noticed that the FireTV will now switch to the screensaver and then sleep after an inactive period while Kodi is running, previous it would just stay on unless you backed out of XBMC/Kodi.
